I HEARD THIS SONG FOR THE FIRST TIME ON A RADIO WHEN I WAS NINE OR TEN, AND IT MADE SUCH AN IMPRESSION ON ME THAT I KEPT IT IN MY HEAD EVER SINCE , UNTIL I FOUND IT AGAIN ON YOUTUBE LISTENING TO IT NOW KEEPS BRINGING ME TO THE QUESTION:"WHERE DID WE GO WRONG?" ARE TRUTH AND BEAUTY ANY DIFFERENT NOW THAN BEFORE ? NO. WAT HAS ONCE BEEN REVEALED MAY NOT LONGER BE HIDDEN, AND WHAT HAS BEEN DONE ONCE MAY BE DONE AGAIN.
Great upload, I had no idea there was a pre and post coda to this song. I am a rock junkie born in '66 and can't picture life without all this technology. Remember buying greatest hits cds left and right in the early 90's but of course all had the edited versions. Now I can find so much more on the 'net!
Great inspirational song by Melanie and The Edwin Hawkins Singers! This song is at least as relevant (if not more so) today as it was in 1970...Glad Melanie Safka is still alive and singing today!
We need this again in the USA... Solidarity in the people! No, not the LSD or Veneral Diseases, but the SUPPORT of eachother..... Melanie was born in the age she was meant to be in, many cannot say that. She and all of them from Woodstock decade need to come back and resurface and fight once more for this country!!!! Long Live Freedom of Speech and fighting the top for what is Morally Right! RIGHT ON!
Brilliant song, I still have the vinyl album, a precious possession from the 70s. The sound is awesome on vinyl but this YT upload is outstanding. What a voice! Thank you!
This is a beautiful song from Melanie.I have seen woodstock the movie and the hippies were the peaceful people.I wonder what they would have thought if they had iof known of the agressive ,negative punk skinheads and so on in the future bands.I have always thought that there was only one woodstock and this is the oneApparently the others were a bit of a flop.Go for it Melanie!Men can live like brothers, candles in the rain.Beautiful lyrical content.
@hippyblood4 What's happened? Well December 2012 isn't that far away. And the big shift could never be about to happen if it wasn't for you fore-runners, you wayshowers. I guess for the big shift in consciousness to happen, we have had to let go of a lot and to work through a lot to get there. And although *you* were ready at that time, most of the planet's population wasn't. We're nearly there.
I had this album years go and don't think the song was this long on there, but wherever this is from, thank you for the download, this was just awesome!
I must admit, Im not into Woodstock, or hippies, or war protests, but this song is awesome! This womans voice is beautiful, and the backround singers- The Edwin Hawkins Singers- are an great compliement to the song! I was only a little kid when this song was out, and had forgotten about it until I heard it recently, thank you for posting it, as well as the "interesting" pics!
Thank you so much, clayopalstar, for uploading this version of Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)! This song is even more relevant today than during the Vietnam War. The lyrics are so powerful. This song should be dedicated to all the brave soldiers who fought (and some died) for their countries during all World Wars, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf wars, the wars in Iraq and Afganistan, and the tensions in The Middle East and North Africa as well as their loved ones left behind.
@gorickard319582010 Nothing to add sans that's what I do too. This was the song in which I sought out Meher Baba. I wanted to know who she was singing about. Too beautiful, too sorrowful. I agree fully on the Palestinian/Israeli vision.
Woodstock was so much fun. I was stoned and drunk but enjoyed my " freelove"! Funny how my "freelove" has been my wife for more than 40 years. Funny how life works out! Just got back from Viet Nam and was SO anti war! Love you Melanie! Met my wife during your singing of this this song!
@RImusclebear i'm with u, but where did u meet ur wife as Melanie did not write this song until after woodstock (it was her inspiration)....................peace
at 52 i am still a great fan. the story behind this song is in Vietnam a helicopter crew was trying to find their base and they could hear this song playing and made it in...fact or fiction, it's an old story and i like to believe it.....in fact i think it is on the back of the album or CD....
The "high quality" kinda ruins it. Because digital doesn't have the literal "high quality" real-time-play that vinyl does. But I'm happy that it doesn't skip like my Dick Clark record does!
My mother was a great fan of Melanie. She is now on this moment 62 years old and she bought when she was almost 20 years old (1970) an LP of Melanie "Candles in the rain". This LP are still in my property. Near Melanie, my mother was a great fan of Joan Baez, Paul Simon and Arthur Garfunkel. Otherwise she likes folk-music. Even I like this kind of music. Thank you very much for posting this!!!

Wow!!! Just barely before my time....wish I could have experienced it....but then I would be older than I already am! Thanks for putting this up...really nice!!!
I had this when I was 14-16...I am so sorry that I lost it somewhere on my journeys...BUT, I will look for this album as I go into alot of old stores...If I find more than one , I will let you guys know...I'd sell it for what I paid ..which is ,usually, only a few bucks!
