It looks like someone up on a balcony seat held some sort of gadget to record those songs. Well, I for onr am glad they did that. Elliott Smith was here in Atlnta in 2000 and I didn't even know it. I believe that show took place at the Variety Playhouse. I'm reading a comment by LastingsGriller and he is right. I need say nothing else. He nailed that one. Boyce Livingston Webb
i remember when he died... i was only 7 but my father was playing his records non stop for a month after. after hearing them so much, he really became an inspiration to me.
definitely the best live;i'd ever seen!in france, bordeaux, but i wasn't thinking, that this will be the last!!i just remember a shy guy whith great songs, and really close with his audience!just one of thr greatest moment of my (musical) youth!
thats funny when people criticize the way he plays HIS song. it his, he can play it how he wants. and if it doesn't sound like the CD. thats fine. if you want it to sound like the CD, listen to the CD. otherwise, go write your own songs and stop bothering people.
YEAH!!!!!! Now a days, people go to shows expecting to hear the exact recordings. THATS NOT WHY YOU GO TO SHOWS!! Hendrix was NEVER about that. personaly im upset if i see a show thats exactly how its meant to be. it lets me down, it seems fake!
Thing is that he made several versions of some songs. Mostly because he made one he liked, but the record execs didn't. He had to edit his song to their tastes for the record, but got to play his own versions live.
he uses his thumb I just looked at him playing it at another concert and I noticed that too he like taps it twice then plays the rest of the chord and sorry i dont know if its a whole step down i just play it normal tune
I heard in an interview that he tunes that ways because he picked up someone (family members?) guitar and tuned it that way the first time, then figured out later he had tuned it the wrong way, but he just kept on using the almost a whole step down tuning
i think thats accurate, yeah. And i think it was his girlfriend around the time of Roman Candle, which was in standard, and the self titled album was a whole step down.

I read a tab that this is a whole step down
And it didnt sound right

I don't play it a whole step down when I play for people
Elliott usually does that to his songs to get a "bassy" quality out of the guitar but I'm fairly certain he doesn't do it for this song
hope it helps
-Jonas
P.S.Art5301 is right he uses his thumb to hit the root note twice then strums the whole chord...
