Actually it has been almost 7 years and nobody is crying after Tarja. Whoever loves her (myself included) is listening to her solo work.

Regarding live performances.. NO. Great singers are even better live. Here, this is called talent: different recording quality, perfect performance. And she sings it almost crying.

@georg1187 Nightwish is Tuomas' baby and I can see why he chose Annette. For what he wanted to do and where he wanted to go, he needed a singer with more versatility and who isn't so glued to a prticular style and sound. Tarja's style is unique and killer, but she can't get very far outside of it. And, in fairness, Annette can't duplicate that style, but clearly Tuomas wanted to branch further out with the sound and he was unable to do that with Tarja. No disrespect, just a fact.

Maybe you should listen more of her. Heard Tarja singing rock the rocker's way, heavy metal, classical and opera, then folk, trance and even lullabies or spanish romances accompanying herself on piano.

Basically, aside from death growls and rap, she sings everything with a BIG mention - she sings those perfectly.

Problem with Anette is not the style, but that she sings badly.

Don't know what she tries.. to be versatile if you say so.. but the results are not good.

Btw Nightwish never changed theirs core style, even if they changed the vocals drastically.

Their style in a nutshell is a playful creative folk-based structure, but interpreted in a "cult" way with orchestras and heavy guitar riffs.

Nothing changed - and that's a good thing.

They wanted a change of style for vocals? OK, but at least pick a decent vocalist.

"Slow, Love, Slow", brings in torchy jazz elements, the crazed, circus-like tropes in "Scaretale", and so on. And as far as vocal ability, she displays fine technique and intonation, so while you may not like her voice, she's a competent singer. There is a difference between "bad", which means poor by technical standards, and something that is not to one's taste.

In this case, for me "bad" means singing out of tune, falsly, by the ear. Not respecting a song's measures, straining and screaming.

To answer your question: singing by ear, being out of tune, not controlling the voice the phrasing, lacking any technique or musical affinity. The singing in this video is a perfect example and funny thing is, it's such an easy song to sing. YT is full of better fan covers.
