By unrelated you mean absolutely related right? I mean when you install windows you don't get it, when you install Ubuntu you do.
The software is all free right... you know that a Linux "distribution" is just a collection of free software. Sooo... if it's bundled together then it's related. That is why there are tones of distributions. Everyone can make their own.
Windows and Mac can say "I own this"... a Linux distribution will only say "I think I'm a cool group of software"
Windows and Mac users can say "I paid hundreds of dollars for an operating system and software." Linux users can say "I got an operating system and a bunch of prepackaged software at no cost."
I don't have an issue with paying for software... but the current software model many people don't feel is fair. An OS is more like a road and it better helps the economy if everyone has access to the same roads rather than allowing selfish organizations to control what we may or may not do with our computers (Bicycles for the mind as Steve Jobs called them). Linux is an open playing field. If it does not do what you need then hire a programmer, you benefit, everyone benefits.
Not taking sides here, but McGamer is right. MS Office takes up more RAM and CPU, simply because MS Office has more features running. I myself prefer MS Office because lets face it, if your computer can't handle an office suite, buy a new computer. A few things you failed to mention are Open Office's...
A) PowerPoint is bad
B) Spreadsheet lack a lot of features
C) Spellcheck languages are outdated
If you can't afford MS Office, OpenOffice will do most things ok, but go with MS Office if you can.
You make a good point. Microsoft Office isn't available for Linux platforms, so if you use Linux you're pretty much stuck with OpenOffice. I use Ubuntu on my laptop and Open Office works fine, but I do a lot of spreadsheets and often times i have to transfer them onto Excel on my desktop to do what I want.
You aren't REALLY stuck.. You can use microsoft office on linux, it's not just installing, but it's possible. Or you use wine to install microsoft office, Or you use virtual box to use windows within linux. These are backdoors, I know. But it does work if you REALLY need it :)...
I really can't decide. I have OpenOffice 2.4 and Microsoft Office 2007. I personally like OpenOffice cause it's simple. And Microsoft Office is a little slower than 2003. But I don't know. Which one should I keep?
Well what kinda sucks is that I have projects in college that im working on which I think aren't readable by the Office program that they run over there.
give it time and it will work on all. If u feel that way go ahead and spend ur money. Most ppl are happy because u get like 95% of the features that MS Office has for free.
Thanks for the negative feedback on the comment, whoever did that. I was merely stating a fact. Did I say I was unhappy with Open Office? No, I like it. However, the people who are really paying for it, such as businesses, need it for the compatibility. Also, a lot of people are happy with MS Office because it's guaranteed to work. What happens when you work on a powerpoint at work and it isn't compatible to work with at home? I like Open Office, but it isn't ready to handle all MS file types.
Linux has NO alternative to Xactimate
Linux has NO alternative to Microsoft Publisher
Linux has NO alternative to ArtRage
Linux has NO alternative to Vector Magic
Linux has NO alternative to Pivot
I can name over a 1,000 more program Linux has NO alternative for.

Software Grammar Nazi: OpenOffice is actually cross-platform and totally unrelated to Ubuntu.

I am aware of that stop making assumptions.

OpenOffice is slow and shitii. Well everything progrmed in Java or that uses Java's Virtual Machine is slow and shitii.
Try installing Open Office in a dozen school computers with 256 of RAM, while Office enterpise 2007 starts in 5 seconds.

U really know nothing lol. Open Office is faster than Microsoft, it also takes up less ram.

Many people pay for Microsoft Office because of compatibility. OpenOffice is great, but it isn't perfect at handling MS Office documents.
