The last album of the Greg X. Volz techno-rock era. Now they are called Classic Petra. I attended the same church as Mark Kelly when he left to get an MBA.
The last time these five played together was 1985--until now! Greg X Volz, Bob Hartman, Mark Kelly, John Lawry, and Louie Weaver reunited in 2010 under the name Classic Petra. They have recorded new music and are touring the world, singing some of Petra's greatest old songs, and some great new songs. They are calling millions of prodigals to return to the Lord. I admit, I got emotional when I saw them together again after so many years.
He he he, I love Petra like my own mother, but this song is soo trippy, sometimes it scares me. Interpretive dance. It was amazing in the 80's hahaha. That is to say, long live Petra.
On my computer I have Petra cd albums from 1974 to 2005 and Petra The Ultimate Collection :) And I have few cd ablums with Greg X Volz one of the former vocalist in Petra :) And yeah I do spend some of my free time listening to Petra, but other music too I like to listen to :)
I think Stryper should now do a cover album of Christian Rock/Metal bands, include this song and metalize it. It would rock!(Not that it doesn't already.)
I agree, I have been listening to Petra for over 30yrs, and considering they were the first true Gospel Rock group that pushed the revolution for all Christian rock groups of today!!! Thanks to god for an awesome group!!
I wonder what a Christian Rock band does with all their millions? give it to the poor? or to the church? or possibly keep it spend it on fast cars and big houses?
do you know what? This is God's job - he will once ask this! Don't worry about the responsibilties others have.I want to point you: "better to fall into the hands of men then in the hands of the almighty God" - this will give you peace to care about the things God trust others - He will ask them and He will ask you one day! What did you do with the things God trusted you for? I'm working betweens the "least" and this is my experience.
@Kenebneb1 Hi! Most all of the Christian bands that I have followed the careers of, consider their music & performances a ministry. I KNOW Petra does. Unlike many non-Christian bands, money and material wealth are not their main concern. Many have specific charities or other ministries they support financially, & prayerfully, even physically. While they probably don't, say, take a vow of poverty, they likely do tithe. I hope that helps answer your question. Matthew, Chapter 6 verses 19-34 :-)
Oh, dear. Oh, dear. This must've been made in the 80's. Look at those mullets and bad fashion choices. This song sounds so dumb. I do like SOME of their songs but not this one.
@80sGlamMetalMania87 mmm...I don´t know about 1st and 2nd place, (maybe I agree with you 1# Stryper, 2# Petra) but in 3rd I´ll go with Guardian, and 4# and 5# Bride and Whitecross (in any particular order) :)
Louie isn't blonde!!!! haha. But seriously, I was born the year this album came out...grew up listening to this and most all the other albums. Love these guys. Though my personal favorite time with with them was during the John S, John L, Louie, Bob, and Ronny years, the earlier stuff is awesome as well.
Classic Petra is back!! New album out and tour starts this year!! If you like classic Petra please vote for them in the reader choice awards .com poll
First time I've heard or seen this. The title caught my eye. I've been having troubles but decided to try to give it all over to God and let him be my armor and sword.
This is a great song. Love the video, but you can tell. It's definitely 80s by looking at how they were dressed. That said, great 80s Christian rock band.
Its hard to believe this was 25+ years ago now. It still seems like just yesterday. Not Of This World and Beat The System were the first 2 albums that I owned (on tape) and the Beat The System tour was the first rock concert that I went to.
i love Petra but I love Greg Volz more. I always wonder how On Fire & Beyond Belief albums would have sounded with Gregs classic 80's vocal skills. John Schlitt is a good singer but his raspy voice bugs me.
Petra is partly to blame for me becoming a Christian in 1988 Beat the System and This Means War were always played while we were in the Garage fixing my friends car in Aug 1988. Thank you Petra for being a part of my salvation.

They sounded good even back then, but they got a lot heavier then this once John Schlitt took on lead vocals and PETRA started to go in a more Metal direction. This Means War!, On Fire!, Wake Up Call, and Jekyl & Hide are some of their heavier albums.
I went to the beat the system concert when they came to Phoenix, Pride Pavilion. I was a new Christian and was surprised to see the huge variety of people there. Old, young, even one asshat that needed to be beat down. Louie Weaver gave me an autographed pic of the band after the show. Louie even told me that he loved me, which I didn't understand why he would say that for about a year later.
Until 1986 I was a hardened atheist...after becoming a born-again Christian in the summer of that year, Petra (pet-ruh not peet-ruh) was the very first Christian rock band I came across. In fact, 'Beat the System' was on the album that I bought and liked. I got to see them perform during their "Beyond Belief" tour in Montana. It was awesome! Like many of you, I find the video lacking, but the music is great. (And more importantly, the song's message is the truly great part of the song.)

Nice video, Nice song, the best of Petra!!!!! One of my favorites band! Muy favorites: Stryper, Whitecross, Backstreet Boys, later Petra, keep rocking!!!!!!!!!!
Greg Volz is the "christian" equivalent of David Lee Roth. Was part of a successful band and then his head got too big and he went solo. Now he's a f***ing has-been! I love it!
Petra is one of the few bands that doesent put their entire focus on the guitar. I love the keyboard solos and the bass in this song. This make their songs interesting.
@CrosbyOvie Oh don't get me wrong Bob hartman is a genius when it comes to the guitar and he has done some awsome guitar solos but I like petra because every instrument is good and the guitar is not always the center of attention
Which system are they saying to beat? I take it they are encouraging beating the world's system of living for self? I think it goes good for the system as government, too. Very good in both applications. :)
This song is about rising up beyond what you are... don't let anyone pressure you into doing what you know is wrong just so you can belong.. Be yourself follow your path and you will prevail... I loved Petra.... was such an awsome group..
Petra :) Greg X Volz and his mates :) I was unlucky to lose my Petra Beat the system :'( But I can get it elsewhere on mp3 instead hehe :) I have Petra and Greg X Volz on cd's here at my apartment :)
Wow i got chills hearing this song for the first time in about 25 years! Takes me back to camping with the Royal Rangers(church group) at Garner State Park in Leakey Texas!!!!
Eu tenho esta música gravada em um cassete, ma não sabia que era Petra. Nossa! É o vocalista antigo!

Greg Volz is the "christian" equivalent of David Lee Roth. Was part of a successful band and then his head got too big and he went solo. Now he's a f***ing has-been! I love it!

I am about as hardcore an atheist as you'll meet, but I gotta admit these guys are pretty badass.

Petra is one of the few bands that doesent put their entire focus on the guitar. I love the keyboard solos and the bass in this song. This make their songs interesting.

you're making a point, but for me Petra is such a good band because of their lyrics...

Very good words & music in this song (& others of Petra's, like "Graverobber" & "In The Likeness of You"). A real blessing!

@CrosbyOvie Oh don't get me wrong Bob hartman is a genius when it comes to the guitar and he has done some awsome guitar solos but I like petra because every instrument is good and the guitar is not always the center of attention

@wavovideoeditor yeah totally.

1984....Techno-pop cheese was all the rage. They were just chasing down the kids where they were.
