Famine is the result of fiat currencies - fiat currencies allow the opportunity for money issuers to create money from thin air and charge interest on it. After a time, the money issuer is owed so much interest that he is better off ceesing the issuance of money forcing asset prices to tumble and collect the land and property of the people who owe him - fully backed by gold currencies cannot be manipulated in this way. So, starvation is essentially a result of insufficient currency.
