These were Hitler's way of keeping aircraft development current under the terms of the Versailles treaty, where they weren't supposed to have any kind of air force. It was really designed as a bomber and troop transport, but hidden in plain sight as airliners. It just so happens that they made fantastic airliners as well, and it's this role that they really became known for.

I saw on the fuselage of this Ju52 Berlin Templehof which reminded me that I had flown Frankfurt-Templehof-Frankfurt aboard a USAF
C-47, 1959, before the wall.
