  • what is this trigger everybody's talking about on almost every drum video?

  • if he plays a jazz beat does he melt??

  • jesus shows up at 0:13 with a guitar hehe

  • o.0

    Jan is a God

  • Can you say triggers? Lol that fuckin set sounds like an electric set it is so full of triggers.

hellhammer is a fuckin legend tho

  • might as well get an electronic kit.

  • @ikedrummer might as well shut the fuck u

  • gay

  • triggered toms sound awefull

  • youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=iyyE0BZi2gI

  • sounds awful !!!!

  • ..Who gives a flying shit if the drums are triggered!?! Do you idiots have ANY understanding of just how hard it is to get a crisp drum sound when performing extreme metal live? Unless the venue sound guy is a magician the bass drum usually sounds pretty shit so triggers are generally needed to enhance the performance. Real fans of this music don't give a shit if its triggered or not..they just want a good live show wuth good crisp sound.

  • @Dungarth Aside from that, having his whole kit triggered gives it a very robotic and sterile sound - something that actually goes very well with this music. The best example of this robotic sound being used to his advantage is Mayhem's Grand Declaration Of War. That album is completely alien and robotic sounding; from the guitars to the vocals to the bass and the drums... he chooses his sound carefully.

  • @Dungarth i dont think anyone doubts how hard it is.. but that doesnt mean to say it sounds good... Triggered kick is a must have id say.. but my personal problem is the triggered toms in this clip anyway.. they sound too processed. Doesnt sound like a human. That of course is my personal opinion.. i know exactly why triggers are used.. but i dont like the artificial sound of triggered toms or snares.

  • @Dungarth Actually people who criticize triggered drums "just because it's fake" have no slight idea about drumming.

I do have an issue with how his toms used to sound, but he made it sound better eventually. so long as it sounds good I don't care how

  • It sucks. Can't he just play on natural drums?

  • @Jugolbrazowy it sucks. why can't you just piss off?

  • ok the base sounds good, but the toms... *puke*

  • triggers....

  • hes deffinantly using triggers on all his drums cause even his toms have that click sound

  • @Iq4fcrx7 agreed he could have at least mic'd the toms and snare, just the kicks could have been triggered. Way to unprofessional for a "professional"

  • @baronofhell08 Fuck unprofessional and professional, I like the sound and that's all that matters to me.

  • @baronofhell08 Dude, he's from the early Norwegian black metal scene, I don't thik "Professionalism" is something him and his friends cared about.

  • axis kick pedal double bass and e-kit trigger.

  • EWWWWWWWW listen to those disgusting sounding toms... really he has to trigger the whole kit? Fucking sad

  • @lq4fcrx7 fuck you

  • @neilpagan80 you are gay

  • @IbanezMason thanks

  • Rabbit feet!

  • Needs more cowbell.

  • Plus the problem is that GK is mainstream and american, with his many solos and videos on the web... And everyone knows the bands of GK, like Nile, Sickening Horror and more... HH is totally the opposite, with metalheads that knows only little Mayhem and Dimmu Borgir, and no one knows his other bands, when he play with a lot more of his insane jazzy-progressive-avantgarde style... For this reason, a comparison is a bit unfair, until you know very well the HH's complete work on years... IMO

  • @MrAlucard222 GK is from greece.... and Dimmu borgir is THE most selling black metal of all time.

  • @sick898 For sure GK is from greece, but Nile is an american band, man... Unfortunately HH play with Dimmu only for two albums, Stormblast 2005 and In Sorte Diaboli 2007, and black metal is infinitely more unknown than death metal, dude... Plus you need to hear HH in other bands, not only in Dimmu Borgir, where he play only speed and solid stuff... Arcturus, Winds, Shining, Age Of Silence, Jorn Lande, Carnivora and more? Ever heard or listened? I think no... ;))

  • @MrAlucard222 i've heard him in arcturus, that shit is impressive! BUT i still love GK's drumming more, even though i love HH's drumming!!

maybe that is because i love fast pounding powerful death metal with technical finesses.

  • @sick898 And i respect your taste and point of view... For sure HH and GK are a bit different drummers, with different metal bands... At last they are probably the best metal drummers alive, of all time, for me... Try to hear HH's drumming in Winds, Shining, Age Of Silence, Thorns and more, and let me know if you like it... I can give you the albums name if you want...

  • @MrAlucard222: Go here...watch?v=RFKNQnsu1rU

GK trained by this man here...watch?v=tcFtBniZd3I

A comment by GK when asked to do a Jazz video..."I am not gonna make a video for the people who wants to see me jamming jazz...i am not a jazz player anyways. And even if i do, they will still be fighting about Joey Jordison in there..."

HH and GK can play jazz, HH and GK can both play extremely fast to within a few BPM of each other, both have played in many genres...see where this is going?

  • @Hansfrax I know that GK is really well trained, but as a drummer, HH is more talented for jazz and diverse style than him... For the speed they are almost at the same velocity, but HH is a bit faster with feets and hands... However, they are probably the best drummers in metal, for sure... My comment is more dedicated to drummers like Frost, Yeung, Inferno and so on... They cannot compete with HH or GK!

  • @MrAlucard222 GK has more power and diversity.... speed can't compete with that for shit!! IMO (pay good attention to the part where i said "IMO"! hehe :))

  • @sick898 You have listen to HH's drumming on other different bands than Mayhem and Dimmu Borgir? I mean Winds, Arcturus, Age Of Silence, Jorn Lande, Shining, Carnivora and more... In no way HH is only concentrated to speed... It's not a matter of opinions, HH is way more various and complex, and that is an unquestionable fact... Come on, listen well... ;))

  • He dropped triggers years ago, he's still sick, same as GK but too bad GKs drumming "vocabulary" cannot be as extensive as Hellhammers, man played in every metal genre known to man and rocked in every single one of them whereas GK is kind of strictly condemned to death metal :D

  • @Zeromaxy Exactly, totally agree...

  • @MrAlucard222 No, Im not talking bout "OMG!1! Triggerz make u faster!!" kind of thing. I'm just annoyed at the people who bash on Kollias because sometimes his blasts get a little quiet at the end of a concert. If the snare was triggered then it wouldn't be obvious, as he could just do small strokes and still get the same level of sound out. If HH was micing his snare then you'd probably notice the same thing happen.

He always triggers his double bass dude...you just have to for the fast stuff.

  • @MBD3037 I understand and agree... But trust me, HH in Winds, Age Of Silence and Shining doesn't trigger his drums, neither the double bass, and he make a super fast double bass part like The Chosen Legacy, or even faster, and for much more long time! I reccomend you to listen to this parts...

  • @MBD3037

And what again is so wrong with not using technology to your advantage in music? Music isn't about the muscular endurance in you foot tendons...it's about how well you play an instrument and well =/= fast, so yeah, i'm going to be annoyed when I hear a tired out drummer who chooses to beat the hell out of himself and then gets tired.

And for the record, HH is muscular as fuck and strong. He wrestles as a hobby and is way stronger and faster than kolias but i still don't call it music

  • Comment removed

  • @sellingmypokecards Finally... Play drums it's not gym! It's music... Play simple blast beats (not gravity blasts) for long time at high speed it's not talent, same for long double bass parts... It's only gym practice... For this reason Hellhammer is way better than Kollias, because he can play faster than him and, most important, he's a lot more various and talented than him, period... Hellhammer uses his crazy jazz technique for play the drums fast, not the gym practice...

  • @TopTenMusicChannel Thats pretty much what im thinking. All the HH fans talk shit bout Kollias, n yet HH triggers his toms and snare, while just "tapping" his double bass. Its bullshit.

  • @MBD3037 What's the problem about triggers? You know that HH in some bands doesn't use triggers, neither in the double bass, and he goes even faster? So stop say bullshit about triggers in every HH's video...

  • BOOOO TRIGGERED TOMS BOOO

  • I'm so fckn sick of jerks that compare HH with that jordison fag.HH is a man of tradition, man that is the founder of extreme drumming, and is waaaay ahead of its time, even now,20 yrs after he invented that stuff.Jordison is a rat that thinks he can actually drum.FUCK all Jordison fans,u guys are a shame to a metal scene.

  • I thing that "trigger" thing is becoming quite tiring.Fuck the damn sound since HH is NOT the only one using triggers. The man is obviously an extremely talented drummer with or without triggers and he has proved it so I suppose it is time to stop fucking around with triggers

  • @Posthumanify Exactly! Every metal drummers use trigger, remember this! But trigger DO NOT make you faster or more technical! Trigger only altered the sound, and make speed stuff more audible, because at the insane speed HH goes, without trigger, you can't understand nothing! I don't like trigger sound, but they are necessary... Plus HH in some bands doesn't use them, neither in the double bass... So stop talking about trigger in every HH's video, please...

  • 1. been listening to Mayhem since the 80's so fuck u

    2. i love new and old Mayhem, so up yours....

    3. Arcturus sux....but Dimmu Borgir is the worst band in metal today

    4. Hellhammer's drum sound is fucking pathetic and it makes him suck.... he has some amazing talent .....but I cannot respect him. His drums sound like ducks farting......quack quack..... ,,l,

  • @ursolame666 Listen to the last Winds album, Prominence And Demise, and you will find that HH doesn't have that triggered sound... Hellhammer in some bands, like Winds-Shining-Age Of Silence, doesen't use triggers...

  • @MrAlucard222 i will check it out.....thnx!

  • @ursolame666 Let me know if you like HH's drumming without trigger, ok? You will find that he's at the same speed without trigger, or even more fast...

  • So funny how everyone is asking more drums in their monitors! XD

  • Hellhammers soundcheck is more kickass than Jordisons solo :D

  • And why everybody tells me that Mike Portnoy is the best drummer?

Mike's pitiful against HHammer. Jan is real crazy beast - less self-adoring, more self-improving ))) I wish I were a woman to have a chance getting children from him... joke )

  • @rjrudder

Dimmu Borgir never burned churches or got into any real controversy, church burnings was early 90's, it's history. Emperor, Burzum and Mayhem were the real crazies back then. Really fucked up.

  • @DrCornwallis100 band members of gorgoroth were in jail for burning a church. dont forget this band! =)

  • i really like hellhammer but the triggers sound rediculous

  • @agitatedbells i coulnt agree more! just listen to his triggers when he plays live with mayhem.. horrible :D

  • @agitatedbells Seriously, his drums sound like fucking shit. He's a good drummer but the triggers ruin him for me.

  • @agitatedbells It's true. The last time I saw Mayhem the triggers ruined the whole show. Not only were they misfiring but they sounded like shit too. Even Hellhammer was getting really fucked off with them.

  • There is still hope for Arcturus...

  • @SillySantaHat Arcturus gets reunited in 2011, if you already didn't know :)

  • Arcturus should come back with new album soon :(

  • id buy a ticket just for hellhammer's sound check

  • arcturus doesnt burn churches in the netherlands, thats what makes dimmu borgir, DIMMU BORGIR! lol u gotta put some elbow grease into talking about satanity lol

  • I can live with triggered Kicks (if they're a killer tone) BUT...Triggered toms???? Really!!! and Snare???? Come on.... at least the sound guys happy,Fader up, go get beer,go home, cash check.

  • Best band EVER! Arcturus are fucking epic, hope they get back together. There's no band like them.

  • Hellhammer is by far my favorite drummer ever!! Hailz!!

  • monter respect.

  • shit tombs soud hahahahahahaha

  • see Hellhammer's live sound check it brililiant

  • No,It Arcturus isnt any better than any band,Dimmu Borgir is a VERY good band,Especially their old albums,But arcturus,Its mindblowing

  • I dont listen to alot of BM, but this guy was amazing on Jorn's Worldchanger :)

  • OH yes ,...the glory days of Arcturus

  • the toms sound like midi...

  • @MunkyCZ all triggered

  • Funny thing about H. is that if you check out Pearl Drums website,he's listed among JAZZ and not METAL drummers!

  • How can one use to much double bass?...

  • @renshammar heel toe

  • @hardcorbikerider No, Hellhammer NEVER use heel-toe, trust me, only heel-up, always... I don't know why a lot people think that HH use heel-toe, but it's a legend, he always use heel-up in his career...

  • @MrAlucard222 he uses push pull for extremely fast double bass. i.e the chosen legacy. actually you can see him doing it on the ancient skin hellfest video.

  • Hellhammer is by far THE most important drummer in black and extreme metal, he was around in the "True Norwegian Black Metal" days in Mayhem and has played in pretty much every other good black metal band, Dimmu don't count since they sold out haha.

  • A true master of the drums.

  • Hellhammer is my favourite drummer by far! Followed by kollias/inferno/frost

  • triggers are the only way for a good sound and thats that. u can also have true simulated velocity instead of just the one

  • Comment removed

  • @t0ko you're so wrong

  • lol this vid is like an endless discussion of triggers =P

  • cant believe he triggers his toms when they sound that terrible,my alesis dm5 pro toms sound better lol

  • say what you want but youre not hellhammer and never will be

  • vamos ya ese rolandddddddddddddddd¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • The thing with using so much trigging that he does is that the sound from the toms are really boring and static since it plays the same sample over and over, with no change in velocity or where on the drum you hit. But playing this fast without triggering would make a very dirty sound live. Specially on the bass drums

  • ehm guys just dont forget that trigers are actually to seperate the sound from the 2 pedals. actually trigers fix sound so it sounds better. now if u want to use somekind of echo in pedals thats another story. so dont hear triggers and think omg he have no tech. sometimes triggers save ppl from bad sound record at lives and stuff...

  • @lordazmodeus Will hellhammer be on the drums in the new arcturus material?

  • Hellhammer is just too amazing for words.

  • arcturus in 2011 =')

  • we can only hope....that would rule

  • actually 2011 IS the lucky number check vortex's myspace

  • Don't get me wrong, I love Dimmu Borgir.

But it's such a fucking shame this band split up.

In my opinion, Hellhammer and Vortex did a better job in Arcturus; I think this band's better than Dimmu

  • @xXxKazamaxXx are they still split up??!??!?!?!

  • @The420KushKing420 Yes, I'm afraid so.

Shame really. They could at least do ONE get-together gig or something for those who never got to seem them live..

    .. Like me =[

  • @xXxKazamaxXx WHAT!!!! I WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE THEM LIVE IN SEPTEMBER OR DECEMBER WITH AMON AMARTH!! wtf is that bullshit! X0

  • @The420KushKing420 Mate, they've been broken up for years

  • @xXxKazamaxXx wo ive ben under a rock eh?

  • @The420KushKing420 Since 2007, I'd say you have been lol

  • @xXxKazamaxXx 2008? this vid was taken in 2008 xD

  • @The420KushKing420 whut!? Must be a mistake. They broke up in 2007. April 16th 0_o

  • @xXxKazamaxXx wow what a bunch of faggets..... idk why they broke up how fucking gay is that that still pisses me off!

  • @xXxKazamaxXx dimmu sucks massive donkey cock and anyone who calls them black metal should be shot

  • @SatanNazi Ahhhh what a lovely comment. Alas, it puzzles me as to why you are telling me that...

  • @xXxKazamaxXx Dimmu Borgir sucks. they have lost all respect from me. they are a joke of a black metal band.

  • @AnceintWoods .... Ok then?... Pointless comment...

  • @xXxKazamaxXx

Dimmu Borgir has become a poser emo band, like cradle og filth. who pretends to still be black metal. they havent played eny good black metal since their first album.

fuck that emoshit, and listen to some Darkthrone or Nifelheim

  • @steinvakt You're the third person to tell me something really pointless about Dimmu Borgir that I don't care about.

    Dimmu Borgir are shit.

    They are posers.

    They're emo.

    Wah wah wah.

Dude. I really don't fucking care about Dimmu or your opinion on them.

    And that goes for everyone.

Do not give me more comments like that. Do not pass go. Do not collect £200

    Thank you and lovely day.

  • @steinvakt Darkthrone blows my nutsack. Just because it's minimalist doesn't make it good. And For All Tid sucked balls too. You may be deaf.

  • @TheRealCadaver no, they do not blow your nutsack. iæm not that good at english, so i didnæt understand the rest of your comment. But no, i am not deaf.

btw. please don't tell anyone that you listen to "black metal" if this is you opinion about black metal. it's embarrasing

  • @steinvakt Don't worry, I won't. I'm not attached to a genre or label (like you). I love good music.

Most "true black metal" sucks in my opinion. Alot of it is a poor excuse for shitty musicianship, which is why I respect Dimmu, Filth, and Emperor. They took an oversaturated genre and made it good.

I stand by my statement. Darkthrone/Punkthrone blohs. :P

  • @TheRealCadaver good. I agree that the expression "true black metal" is a bit stupid. either it is black metal, or it's not. And no, it is not "a poor excuse for shitty musicianship". Black metal is'nt about the technical skills, it is about what comes out in the end, the music. and the "shitty quality" it part of the genre. But i actually agree that emperer is pretty good. or mabye WAS good, as allmost every "black metal" band these days. except for mayhem, koldbrann and Darkthrone and so.

  • @steinvakt Back in the early '90s there wasn't the proper technology to make good productions and sound. But now in 2010 it's inexcusable to have a bad quality sound. To be "true" and to be atmospheric comes from the riffing and the whole song writing and not for a rotten sound if you understand what I mean

  • @Posthumanify Exactly... Being "true", that not mean that you need bad sounds, bad technical skills or things like that! The only two old black metal album well registered, for me, are De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and The Secrets Of The Black Arts... Even if like the firsts Immortal, Marduk, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir and so on, i prefer their latest albums, because the overall quality are much much better... That is just my opinion...

  • @Posthumanify if you listen to f.eks Slayer's reign in blood, you see, it was possible to get good quality. But some people, for example me, thinks it souds much better when the quality isn't perfect and that the band is able to play the music similar live as they do on the record. Personally, i think the "shitty quality" some of the charm in all of metal.

  • @steinvakt I see your point. When I say "good production" I don't mean ultra polished Borgir-like production. It's really good to experiment with the sound and production. For example Mayhem have not super crystal sound. It's more "rusted" and I love it.But there are other bands who make bad sound on purpose if you understand what I'm saying

  • @Posthumanify i understand and agree

  • hellhammer seriously has the fastest double bass

  • just discovered a band with him, shearh shining _vemodets arkitektur ..bad ass kicks in this song lol

  • Thorns, Hellhammer on acoustic set =P

  • The triggers make the drums sound fit more with the space theme of Arcturus. No fast drumming (double bass especially) can play live without triggers. they arent cheating...

  • Without the triggers, it would sound like complete crap, no fault of the drummer, just the fact that the mic can't pick up each individual hit on the bass drum that fast so it all gets mushed together. (I think)

  • sounds reasonable, cause the drum wouldnt have enough time to stop vibrating and create a new fresh sound.

  • Therefore he uses triggers..can't really see the problem here..you want him to play slower or....?

  • Listen at 0:42 the Toms are 101% Triggered...

    (@ necromicus]

  • Triggered dampens the sound, does not add any extra beats.

  • Hellhammer has been in like every single norweigan black metal band, haha.

    it's fuckin sick!

  • he is in arcturus from the beginning

  • He is using triggers with probably a DM5 or DM Pro module.

  • Definitely, one can easily hear that the sound has been artificially altered.

  • Comment removed

  • he is, and he is using them verry verry well, as always!

  • winds is awesome

  • Hellhammer is a legend for all Metal drumming, not only Black Metal ! Just listen to Winds and you'll see...

  • I wonder how many people just found out about arcturus from this vid XD

  • probably everyone. I knew about them but never actually listened to them.

  • i found arcturus with the album "Tribute to Euronymous" it have the song Roðt Og Svart

  • raudt og svart for normal typing, his meaning is red and black and tribute to what? i never heard that album before :s

  • hopefully, and Hellhammer fan would have known about them either because of Dimmu Borgir, or by following Hellhammer's bands (which is how I came across them)

  • I'm 1

  • hes a fuckin legend in black metal RESPECT HIM

  • @dimuuborgir999 Hell he aint jst a legend in black metal, hes a legend in all genres,

  • I could see putting triggers on the double bass. but why the Toms, Jan? gahwd...

  • I love his way of playing.

  • ur clown... whatever..

  • NO... Tommy Lee sucks dick, there's NOTHING special about him and he's WAY overrated.

  • I like HH and TL they´re great in diferent ways, no one s overrated, and as a mayhem roadie in the last México show, I cant tell you, 5 minutes with HH and you need to kick his fucking ass.. anyway still playing awesome

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha what is he a dick?

  • my second favourite drummer of all time, and in my opinion, the best blackmetal drummer ever

  • agree

  • Inferno (Behemoth) is the best.

  • triggered toms...ew

  • Totally agree man .. ew it is ..

  • Does a complete recording of this sound check exist?
