@Applecrackerfoot You really think "stoned" meant 'drunk?'.... haha! Think again, sweetie... as Ray was a major heroin junkie.... so, the tome of 'getting stoned' wasn't about smoking pot and didn't start in the 1970's haha!
An old term with an old meaning! So, fire it up and shut up, baby!!!!!
There are a few "problems", regarding this particular clip: (in free order) a.) the sound isn't live. b.) the title and the lyrics of the song are clearly drug liberal c.) the singer - Joe Cocker - seems to be...hm...stoned, during his performance d.) the audience shown seems to be...hm...stoned too. I also come to think of this funny "paradox": Why on Earth did "stoned" artists perform on Woodstock to "stoned" people, i.e. people who were beyond reach for music? Does that make sense?
@Burqua12 Are you stupid for a living ? You seem to have a few "problems" regarding your thought process. Most of the music I see on your channel is drug liberal. There is no "paradox" involved when "stoned" people gather and perform but do I expect anything to make sense to people like you ? No, no I don't.
@hhg61 you seem to have taken offense. I wonder why ? "people like you" refers to people who don't use logic as any cornerstone of their thought process but can also refer to those whose holy than thou attitude gets in the way of enjoying simple human freedom. I'm just another silly monkey is who I think I am maaan.
@Burqua12 whoa you've never been stoned and listened to music have you. Too bad for you. Especially this kind of music. you got all three "problems" wrong, dude. Why are you listening to t his anyway?
@SFCMOORE That is nothing to be surprised about, back then you saw that all the time. It was in the late 70's and 80's that the pigs started cracking down on pot smokers.
My uncle and aunty cleared out Joe Cockers dad's house after Joe's dad died for him recently. My uncle whilst going through Joe Cockers old laundry basket found a cheque from the 1960's made payable to Joe Cocker for 60,000 pounds that he had never cashed!! .....What a legend! What an artist! Proud to be related to this man....peace......big up uncle Joe!!!!!!
This is beautiful. I was recently introduced and *converted* in summer in 2010 to be open. I was basically raised to be racist, anti-everything except guns, but I stopped taking it. I would like to thank destiny, my girl Rita, and the spirits of Woodstock and Burning Man, and all the legends that have passed on.

This is insane, I've never been stoned, never wanted to get stoned, have been on a natural high all my life but I absolutely love this song and now am singing it all the time. Have to chuckle, bet people think I'm a stoner, but I don't care, long as I can listen to the man, Mr. Joe Cocker.
I'm an American, stoned right now, living abroad in the Netherlands the past few years, where you can get stoned while standing in the street talking to a friendly police officer, if you like. Never would have done the stuff back home--was too square--but I sure do like it now! And this is a really fantastic post! Thank you!
i love this song. i going to that scarey dealer down the street and get me some shit my plants won't be ready for a few weeks i this song reminded me i hate being sober

Joe Cocker, Johnny Winter, Ten Years After, Santana and Michael Shrieve.. Woodstock '69 must have been fucking epic. I wish I was born four decades earlier.
Did you know he had a medical condition that made him smell worse than an open-sewer? What I read somewhere. I think it is appropriate . Stinks when singers have an "affected" style like his . I thought it was all in my head from all those years ago - and somebody in the world is still listening to the man and still talking about him...there is nobody like him!!
@FriedChickenofDeath6 Why do people say Im a racist when I say I just do not think he has the credibility to sing in this manner or style? Would you take seriously someone dressed as a cowboy singing traditional Native American songs? I find it kind of insulting to the native Americans. I find whites who steal traditionally "black-cultural "style and music and vocal affectations to be doing what Elvis did selling records that white teens won't buy if the same sounds came from a black man.
@sensitivetony I didn't say you're a racist. And I disagree. What about Hendrix, Miles Davies, B.B. King, Bo Didley, Little Richard, Michael Jackson, Prince, Chuck Berry and many others? They had a black and white miscelaneous style, they were black (MJ not so much, hahahahha) and they sold millions of records. Millions! Thriller is the most selling album of all time! Thay were all black, talented and really famous! This skin-color thing does not exists in music, brother!
@FriedChickenofDeath6 I am not refering to skin color. If you heard say the late great MJ singing a sone with a chinese accent and misspronouncing words as if english was his second language wouldn't you gigle a bit and find it odd?
Ask yourself why a person from England (Joe Cocker) affecting a sinnging style totally alien to his cultural context doesn't also strick you as a blatant commercial marketing ploy? What about authenticity? Why did all the originators of this style die in poverty?
@babzc I would be interested to see your reaction to a japanese singer affecting a Merle Haggard contry -drawl in his or her singing voice. I bet you would find this ridiculous. Why don't you find someone from England putting on a fake voice to be just as ridiculous? Because you are conditioned by your culture to accept the white-mans' right to appropriate as he sees fit and to the have cultural owner-ship of the perloined artistry.
@sensitivetony now wait a minute the enemy of the native americans wasn't cowboys it was "the White man" because he stole all the land. Didn't you have history?
@sensitivetony Elvis was racist and using blacks for their music. That's the difference. Cocker isn't a racist old white guy, he's colorblind when it comes to people. He's showing he has soul and doing it with style here. By your logic no music should exist because if it wasn't for people exploiting each other: we'd have NO MUSIC and noone would like any music but traditional race based music and that's the most racist thing I've ever heard of.
Holy crap.. that bluesy part at the 5 minute mark really shows his vocal talent. Joe Cocker is in my opinion one of the top 5 best singers of all time. Not a doubt in my mind of that.
I like this version even better than Ray Charles's original! I'm going through the comments and spamming the ones about race, I'm just so fucking sick of that stupid bullshit. There are videos on youtube you can go to to complain about race and all the worthless shit that doesn't matter in reality, but keep that cocksucking languange out of places like this.

IM 38.... I REMEMBER I HAD A MUSIC TEACHER IN THE SEVENTH GRADE ( Mr FUKES ) TALKING TO US ABOUT VOCALS / SINGING AND WHAT NOT . HE WAS MIMICING HIM AND MAKING FUN OF JOE SAYING HE HAD NO TALENT , WHOS MUSIC AND TALENT I DIDNT KNOW AT THE TIME .
Mr FUKES , I HOPE YOU READ THIS . I THINK YOU ARE AN IDIOT , YOU ARE N THE WRONG PROFESSION AND COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG ABOUT JOE COCKER ! THIS MAN IS MUSIC ROYLATY !! ITS NO WONDER I ALWAYS THOUGHT YOU WERE A DOPE LOL .

It has always disgusted me when a white singer gets famous and rich absolutly affecting a mimic-stlye of a black blues singer no matter how good the forgery its still reaks of "put-on".
@sensitivetony Joe Cocker is a COVER artist. All he does is cover songs, he doesn't make his own or anything. I love how you say mimic-style, when he's a cover artist, he's supposed to do the songs of other people.....
@sensitivetony yeah you should be a little more open minded and enjoy the music no matter the color of the musicians.
Either that or shut the fuck up because i know im not the only one who doesnt want to read your biased comment.
And you saying he sounds black is prejudice in itself. Just because he sings with soul, power and energe doesn't mean he's black, it means he's talented.
And the same goes for any musician...talent is not prejudice, no one else should be either.
@sensitivetony you're an idiot. you're probably white. you're probably forgetting that people were covering everyone's songs, lot of which were written by both blacks and whites. Cocker has an amazing voice and Ray Charles would say the exact same. Get over the pretentious talk and take it for what it is. Good music.
@sensitivetony Man, you're being a jerk when you say things like this. Color doesn't mean anything, but talent does! Jimi Hendrix (BLACK) covered all along the watchtower, by Bob Dylan (WHITE) and I'm not saying he's untalented or I don't like when black people cover songs by white people. They're all in the same boat, the boat of peace and love!

Not as good as Ray's studio version, but superb and unique in a white-man's Soul kind of way.

Did you know he had a medical condition that made him smell worse than an open-sewer? What I read somewhere. I think it is appropriate . Stinks when singers have an "affected" style like his . I find it totally abbhorent to hear a white-guy mimic an old-weathered negro singer from the deep south. Really such a put-on. Mick Jaggar made millions doing same thing! Musical fast food for the drugged drunk masses! Mc Donalds for the ears!

I love how you say mimic-style, when he's a cover artist, he's supposed to do the songs of other people.....
emightis 1 year ago

Good music.
theILLSofMODERNdan 1 year ago 3
@sensitivetony Man, you're being a jerk when you say things like this. Color doesn't mean anything, but talent does! Jimi Hendrix (BLACK) covered all along the watchtower, by Bob Dylan (WHITE) and I'm not saying he's untalented or I don't like when black people cover songs by white people. They're all in the same boat, the boat of peace and love!
