It's easy to trace the progression from excelsior class to galaxy class in this design. It is one of the best ship designs in starfleet. From it's origins as an Explorer to it's final designation as a Heavy Cruiser, it fulfilled every role fairly well. The Enterprise C held it's own pretty well before she was lost.
The Ambassador class was the test bed for the Galaxy class.... a cross between both galaxy class and excelsior class...... with a hint of constitution class aswell.... or that is the way it was written in the story.
Galaxy Saucer Section
Excelsior Nacelle Pylons
Constitution Class Engineering hull.
In fact it was actually made as a homage to the Enterprise. considering all classes that were used to make it have had an Enterprise. That is why it was never shown until TNG... it was a tribute.
think the C is much better looking than the D which was a bit of a barge - sorry- the designers made up for it with the E which is smart, pity we never got see more of the C class, which I always felt/feel is Kirk's ship writ large - not a bad thing. Nice video - thanks for posting.
i think this ship deserves more than it has gotten over the years and when i say this i mean all the other ships that beared the name enterprise had their own series for the exception of the enterpriseB and C and the E but the E had a few movies but i just wish that they would have had their own series just so the fans could get a feel of the ship if everyone understands what i'm saying
The Ambassador Could have been improved. For instance; slightly linear nacelles like on the Excelsior, and swept back plyons like on the Refitted Constitution or Sovereign, and some additional weapons ( Type XI phasers, 3 new Photon Torpedo Launchers), a new Warp Core similar to the Intrepid Class, and a new internal bridge design, sorta Enterprise-A ish, but with the LCARS interface from Nemesis. Nevertheless, The Ambassador Class ships were not all that bad.
This was a brilliant Star-ship design! it seems to have come towards the end of the "movie era" (Star treks 1-6) judging by the uniforms and bridge design! that grey area between the last original series movie and the TNG era! I'd love to know more about this era and how prolific the Ambassador class was.
As for the Ambassador class itself, that she was an Enterprise speaks volumes and I personally belive that it stands(or at least should) as one of the premiere classes in Starfleet.
@Jim4575 Star Trek canon is only what appears on screen but you make an excellent argument for why what's shown on-screen often flies in the face of logic. The Enterprise D should have made short work of them.
I must say, for being rushed into building it, the model of this class came together nice and neat. It does have a strong Constitution-class detail influences, but it fits very well as the 'missing link' in the Enterprise family. I wished we saw more of them during the Dominion war, but the model was damaged. This video was a real pleasure to watch. Keep up the excellent work.
Great video. I still find it odd that a Galaxy class ship couldn't take out 3 Bird of Prey , I mean all they did was fire 3 to 4 photon torpedoes and a blast of phaser fire. I'm sure if they had fired more torpedoes and kept up with the phasers they would have creamed those ships. The Enterprise C took down 3 of 4 Romulan war birds.
As a Trek fan of over 40 years, I say, good work. I'm amazed to see the mileage the fans have gotten out of a canceled 1960s TV series. However, now the mythical Star Fleet is saturated with too many starship classes.
@kurtb8474 it would get old seeing the same class ships over and over so it makes sence to have various classes just like we have various classes of war ships in the navy
@ransom182 The reason behind that is because there were never any good computer meshes made of it, and the physical model was totally damaged after Unification episodes were completed. I would have liked to see more of them, as well as it's unknown-class counterpart similar to the Galaxy/Nebula type relationship.
THe Ambassador Class... Hm... Definitely not a favorite, but the actions of the Enterprise C should be enough to at least warrant the class to be saluted.
Well not much was done on that class of starship. It must have been the top of the line starship as they would not have named one Enterprise if it wasn't. I mean we went from Enterprise A to D and then saw B in Generations. The Ambassador class was created as inbetween Galaxy and Excelsior class. At least that is how it looked to me. There is so much I would like to know that took place between Kirk's, "death", and the Next Generation. I do agree that it should salued.
I agree. I love all the ships that have had the Enterpise name. That includes the HMS Enterprise, both WWII and present day aircraft cairriers, The space Shuttle (even though it never got to space), the NX-01, the origional, and A through E. I would liked to see more done with the Ambassador class and there should have been more around by the time of TNG instead of the Excelsior class that was shown numerous times.
By the way, I only saw the Ambassador-class only two times, in "Yesterday's Enterprise" and in "Redemption, Part Two," with the Ambassador-class U.S.S. Excalibur under the temporary command of Commander Riker. That particular shot was actually re-used from "Yesterday's Enterprise," which featured Enterprise-D with Enterprise-C. What were the other two episodes?
In the "Star Trek: First Contact" Special Features disc, I believe it was designer Herman Zimmerman who said that the Galaxy-class was designed like a science vessel, but the Sovereign-class Enterprise-E was designed "to attack the Borg"--like a warship. My dad said that the Enterprise-B reminded him of a colony ship. The Ambassador-class Enterprise-C lives up to its class name--it reminds me of a diplomatic escort vessel, especially since the Federation was making peace with the Klingons.
I think that Abasador is evolution of constitution hence its main purpouse were exploration / support ship.
Unlike Excelssior and its evolution sov wich were made purelly for combat... i mean srsly Execssior were present in times of Pirk and its still used in times of Picard..... thats got to be some design if it lasted as loong.....
Abassador were not used as much as far as i know...
The Ambassador class starship is my favorite also.
I always wanted to see it with a V wing style warp nacelle pylon and a a few retro TOS touches like the multi colored necelle collector lights and a few enterprise b touches like the main engine to saucer neck accents .
You can see it on enterprise c in a pattern relief but the same color as the hull.
You know why this ship got underused dont you ?
Some idiot prop guys were moving the table sized model and dropped it !
@Curas1 so in this age of computers and master craftsmen, they couldn't build another one??? This was my favorite ship of all time ever since I saw Yesterdays Enterprise.
Oh I know and yet we got the enterprise E and the Soulvern class with nemesis, the death note of real trek.
I also felt cheated by yesterdays enterprise because we did not get to see that ship fire once and I bet even damaged it would have put out twice the firepower of a Excelsior class.
You know why the enterprise C got whipped don't you ? It was supposedly the first ship to use that wimpy collider phaser ring instead of banks.
@Curas1 I hate to say it but I think Yesterday's Enterprise could have ended better if they had added a 2 or three minute scene of C getting destroyed. I prefer those wimpy phaser rings lol. I think the reason it got whooped was on account of it being ridiculously outgunned. Oh wait it didn't really matter now that the C went back and got destroyed because someone forgot about the 29th century time cops and let some Romulan go back in time to destroy Vulcan and screw up star trek.
oh and don't forget that horrible tasha storyline that let her excape only for Denise Crosby to play a blond haired romulan! uhaaa!!
Oh and Nero or nemo or whoever that romulan was (should have been the pacard clone from nemesis to compleatly destroy star trek) was the biggest violation of the temporal prime directive ever!
They ought to send archer in to get blown up and send zero back through the wormhole lol!
Always liked the design of the Ambassador, shame it was so underused. You'd think there would have been quite a few of them around given that the Excelsior, Miranda and Oberth are still all in service.
Starfleet used many of the aspects from the Ambassador-class to develope the Galaxy-class. The number of Ambassador-class ships was cut somewhat short due to Starfleets desires to build Galaxy-class. The Excelsior and Miranda-classes are still built due to how cheap they are economically. Their role within Starfleet is a 'work horse'. They serve as transportation, patrol, cargo, and secondary fleet-support during times of war.
That was the 'official' explination, but I read a few articles at memory alpha that said that was kinda unlikely, but all things in star trek with a grain of salt, eh ?
I think what bothered me the most was that there was a few outside scenes where they just skipped the enterprise C firing at all!
I remember thinking that at the time I watched it, and that overglorified tub of a cruise liner D hoging the combat (less) glory before it's defecting design coolent system 'coolent leak' burst.
heh i actualy like the ambassador class for one reason since the design is an intergrated fusion of the galaxy and the constitution class cuz of the parts it uses.
i've posted before that this is my favorite ship, I hope to pilot one in Star Trek Online when it comes out. But I thought I would also post that the song in this video is "The Old Ways" by Loreena McKennitt. A great class of starship with a great song to go with it, just thought I would share, enjoy.

Thank you and thank you for a great video. The ambassador is my favorite ship class and she was definatly under appreciated and deserves some time in the spot light. Very well weaving in the Yesterday's Enterprise, game shots, and schematics, great job.
i quote "This ship deserves this tribute. Its underpowered, and virtualy unknown to the Trek community except it appeared on only 4 episodes on all of Star Trek. That was very nice, sir. It actually teared me up a bit, the music and all. And actaully, according to one of my Star Trek RPG books, the Abassador class was a heavyweight in the Dominion war. These ships evened the odds against the Dominoin ships, and pwned the Galor class ships!
