Hey fly had a question about the shifting, im gettting a 6 speed also, so my ? is that does the 1 gear which is down of course count as one of those 6. so after i go to 1. then up past N. would it be 2-5 im guessing. just a minor confusion ive been watching so many diff vids trying to figure that out one out haha. thanks hope to hear from you soon my man. again good lookin on the tutorials there helpin alot. thumbsss wayyyy upppp.
Nice! I am scheduled to take the Harley Davidson Course next week and shifting is my main concern. Just to be clear you can keep the clutch in when downshifting from 3rd to 1st?
Hey Horsefly, thanks for your 3 part video which i will be using as tuition over the next week and a half while am on holiday from work.
Just a few questions.....(Only been riding for just under a week)
Why do i keep lurching forward when changing up through the gears even though i am releasing the clutch through the slow point?
Which would you say is easier for newbies for a stop? Clutch kept in and down through the gears or clutch in, down shift and then release per down shift?
I'm 15, and I'm wondering what bike would be a good bike for me? I live in Norway, and I was also wondering if it's okay to ride in snow or rain? Thanks!
After alot of research, reconstructive leg surgery, and cancer, im getting a kawasaki ninja 250R, God willing. but thats just an opinion. why? they are small, easier to maneuver from danger, better gas mileage, less insurance, cheaper if you make a mistake and scratch, and the most sporty for my money. the downsides... well... carburetor, little less "higher end rev power" and bigger bikes will know your a patient learner. lol. not to be bias or anything. Good luck!
for shifting from 1st to 2nd should i leave the clutch first all the way and then give power or should i do them both (leaving clutch while giving power) ???
So, i'm looking into getting my first bike and taking a safety course, but one thing about shifting. How about starting going up a hill? Down a hill? Is the bike easier to maintain than a car in regards to rolling backwards?
hey matey thanks heaps for making the vid's im about to get my motorcycle licence and just havin a look on here and i have to say ur the first iv come across to explain what ur doin with the gear shifting my question is is it better when breaking to use both breaks?
when you downshift, do you have to have the engine at a certain rpm? i heard when you downshift to high of an rpm, the tire will hop on you. nice video!!
Finally someone says what they're doing while shifting thanks so much! Your videos make the most sense out of all of the motorcycle shifting videos I've seen.
Thanks to ur videos I was able to teach myself to ride...I have made a lot of new friends too. Thanks again n my learning bike was a 1300 hayabusa(my first bike)
Bought a bike when I got back from Iraq in June 2010 and just actually started riding it 2 days ago cause everyone who said they would teach me kept bullshitting, anyway I appreciate the the uploaded tutorials, some people actually learn how to do things from "youtube" and I'm one of those people, I'm getting better and better at taking off but I feel really comfortable shifting thanks to your video, as you get better keep uploading tips to help others get better like you did for me.
good video u should hv someone beside u filming.. but i like your vids mam.. and thx u, good ride btw what a good bike to buy when starting out.. i am looking for a 750 gsx
can you shift all the way down without letting go of the clutch? coz i think how i understand what you saying is that whenever you have shifted down a gear you let go of the clucth till you get to one or whatever you like. Also on a steady traffic road if you get stuck on one gear for example the seep can only go upto 4th gear you can stay there though right?
What if you need to stop quickly and don't have time to down shift? Can you just hold in the clutch and break and switch into the gear you need? For instance...what if someone pulls out in front of you and cuts you off...you don't necessarily need to stop but need to go into a lower gear quickly...
@82cyndi Yes in emergency situation you can hold the clutch and hit the brakes while downshifting.. or if you for whatever reason cannot downshift you can worry about that later... holding the clutch essensially just puts you in N... So you can clutch, brake/downshift at the same time.. then release clutch also... just practice in a parking lot or back road until you are comfortable... avoid the traffic if you can until you are comfortable
I greatly enjoyed all 3 videos in your mini-series on learning how to ride/shift/clutch. However you missed one thing: Breaking. Front vs. rear breaking, differences between the two and when they would be used.
As for shifting, it seems pretty similar to a manual car. Clutch in, gas out, shift, ease clutch, ease gas, repeat. Correct?
I greatly enjoyed all 3 videos in your mini-series on learning how to ride/shift/clutch. However you missed one thing: Breaking. Front vs. rear breaking, differences between the two and when they would be used.
hey dude im kinda starting out like you did, watching alot of you tube and soon getting my license and I'll want to start on a bike I want and like yours im looking at 600s so im curious as a first bike how much are you paying in insurance!
@shagy2k5 You can either drain the gas completely.. idleing til it stalls out.. or fill the gas tank completely with the proper amount of fuel stabilizer such as Sta-bil.. wash and Wax it Tie a garbage bag over the exhaust take the battery out and put it in a warm area (not on concrete) Do not leave the bike on a concrete floor.. if it is on a concrete floor put blocks under the wheels (wooden) Through a breathable cover over it and that is all you need to do.
don't you think it's time to go a bit DEEPER? there is more on riding, than your videos show. but still: your videos are awsome for someone who want's to start.
this is a dumb question, but what's the main reason why most bikes aren't automatic? is it speed. Wouldn't beginners do better if they had automatic or maybe just like a car, an automatic would just be a choice for some. thanks and again, great videos.
the way you shift down seems so much easier. how harmful is that to your engine? it seems hard to shift down ever single time when coming to a stop. I'm a beginner btw. :)
ohh yeah, what if you forget what gear you are in!!!! lol
I AM GETTING MY FIRST BIKE FOR MY BIRTHDAY AND YOU TAUGHT ME ALOT I WATCHED ALL YOUR VIDEO'S THANKS MAN N O YEA WAT BIKE U SUGGEST ME TO LOOK OUT FOR SINCE ITS MY FIRST
thank you bro . you just teached me how to driwe a bike . i did see all three parts,, your bike sounds like 400 or 600cc, i am going to get my first bike 125cc. i hope its the same but i expect lower gears. thanks again
My original question was going to be what bike to get but obviously this video helped on that. And i've never had any motorcycle experience before either like yourself. But my real question now is how did you learn and where did you learn seeing as you've never had any motorcycle experience before either? Did you teach yourself?
Ok, I don't think I understand, I own a 1979 Kawasaki kh125, a really "pretty" old bike, and I want to ride in a way that is as easy on the engine as possible. I was thinking about your point on blipping the throttle. But I can't see how that would work seeing as if I even keep the throttle where it is when I pull the clutch in the downshift the rpm's just go right up and it sounds like it's in pain. Any thoughts? Or have I just got the wrong Idea?
Hey, what kind of helmet are you using? It sounds very quiet and you obviously have a mic in the helmet and it sounds great. I am looking for a good helmet...any thoughts?
"stay inside the line sweetheart" lmao dont run people over ;)...awesome video though, I'm thinking about getting a bike since i dont wanna get raped with car insurance but im just not sure how it feels cuz ive never had a dirt bike or anything before, just a bicycle
I really enjoyed your videos...they were very helpful as I am planning my first motorcycle purchase. I don't have much experience riding a motorcycle but I'm thinking of buying a 600 as my first bike. I've heard the 600 may be too much bike for a beginner but I am big guy over 220 lbs. and pretty strong so I figure I need the horsepower.
I can't wait until I ride!!... because seriously I've watched enough videos on YouTube on how to start your bike and go, how to shift into gears and downshift that I really don't think it's all that hard anymore.
u can shift up without using the clutch. i think most riders do that when there racing. but when you shift down its VERY IMPORTANT to USE the clutch. because if you dont and u downshift that might damage the bike.
how do you feel about a beginner learning on a 1000 or 900cc bike? is the learning curve the same or a bit steeper?? whats the difference if you feel ur under controll? is it more difficult to controll? can it be done?
Very nice and helpful videos man! I'm getting myself my first motorcycle soon, it's going to be a suzuki sv650s (25kw) because i'm only 18 years old. Do you also think that an sv650s is a good motorcycle to start with? Because everyone recommended that one but i'd like to hear your opinion about it. Thanks
hey i just came from a motorcycle class with westside motorcycle academy .and i was getting really frustrated with the most difficult part of ridding which for me is releasing the clutch while at the same time rolling on the throttle to get the bike into motion!.....i know with practice i will get better, watching your video really helped me out! but i do have one question when you riding,,,say in 5th gear or your "highest gear" is it safe to squeeze the clutch at anytime, so you can down shift
I prefer the idea of shifting down with the clutch held in the whole time, it makes shifting a bit quicker (or at least it sounds like it anyway). Is there a particular timing you should stick to when shifting that way, say one every couple of seconds, or can you drop down one per second?
I love how you vloggers like to put up teaching videos, it helps out everyone else in the process.
When you are downshifting you state that you just clutch and gear down but when are the front/rear brakes used? Perhaps you should do a vid on braking in conjuction with downshifting, that would be really good.
great demonstration on shifting. just got a bike and getting familiar with shifting gear. quick question. How fast do you have to be when going up gears? I don't know how fast I should be to go up gears wondering if you can help me. THANKs.
Man i was thinking if i have to make driving license on motorbike and I was not sure about it if i was motorbike, but after your videos, I am sure i WILL buy a motorbike for myself :) thanks a lot :) Really! :)
hey, is that zx6r your first bike? im just curious because im looking into buying my first bike, and i need to know if its too much power for a novice. also, is it comfortable for extended riding? id be doing a LOT of that... thanks dude!
@goforthandeattacos hey if i were u i would go sit on a couple of bikes before u make your decision. For me the zx6r's seat hurts like hell, but my friend loves it. My confort is the gsxr 600 as it has a narrower seat unlike the cbr600 and zx6r which have wide seats. So see for yourself whats most comfortable. Good Luck :)
So basically if you come to a stopsign, you slow down using yor throttle, and hit the brake once slow. After that it goes back to first gear, then you just accelorate then change gears up again? I got a bit confused when you said you had to slow down, then change down gears. Correct me if i'm worng plz.
Right, i've watched like 10 video's now and still don't understand shifting down, say your in 6th, then click all the way down as far as you would if you were going from neutral to 1st? or ... ahhh! i'm so damn confused! :[
@G3or631 if your in 6th gear and you want to down shift to slow down you have to let off the throttle, click down into fifth and depending on your speed either let out the clutch slowly, or give it a little throttle so theres not so much decompression on the engine and after the clutch is let out you let off the gas, you use the throttle very very very little to rev up the bike while the clutch is engaged.
Here's my way of smooth gear shifting: you're in the first gear, doing 'bout 4000 rpms, squeeze the clutch, put it into second, rev the engine at the rpms you want to reach and slowly release the clutch.
So tell me what you tink please...
And I have one question please: Can you shift from second to neutral like you do from the first, by pressing the lever half-way?
i was wondering about the rev match. wanna explain that? ;)

Honda cbr250r
pros - better gas mileage
cheaper
more torque gives it a lot of pep
stock exhaust isnt wonderful but has attitude
built with honda bulletfroof-ness (all parts are really durable)
cons - lower hp means lower top speed at 80mph range
design not as sleek (still nice)
VanquishedWolf 5 months ago
Pros + Cons
Kawasaki 250r
pros - higher hp means a bit higher top speed just around 90mph
more sleek aerodynamic look to it
cons - doesn't get as good gas mileage compared to cbr250r
more expensive
stock exhaust is kind of whiny
long time to warm up
some parts go bad faster

Do you turn the throttle while letting go of the clutch, or only after you let the clutch down completely?
Also, is this any different for shifting into 1st than for 2nd? (as you say that first is more difficult)

1.just hold clutch

3.and when we stop, we shift gears down till 1st or neutral
Ane when moving fast, do we rly have to use motor break? Is it because we will save our breaks?

What do you do to your bike during winter. Do you need to drain fluids?
shagy2k5 1 year ago
@shagy2k5 You can either drain the gas completely.. idleing til it stalls out.. or fill the gas tank completely with the proper amount of fuel stabilizer such as Sta-bil.. wash and Wax it Tie a garbage bag over the exhaust take the battery out and put it in a warm area (not on concrete) Do not leave the bike on a concrete floor.. if it is on a concrete floor put blocks under the wheels (wooden) Through a breathable cover over it and that is all you need to do.

this is a dumb question, but what's the main reason why most bikes aren't automatic? is it speed. Wouldn't beginners do better if they had automatic or maybe just like a car, an automatic would just be a choice for some. thanks and again, great videos.

i have seen all your tutorial videos.. but i don’t know what you mean by “kick down” the shifter.
SuperBudrow1993 1 year ago
@SuperBudrow1993 When you "kick down" you bring your left foot on top of the shifter, and "kick" or "push" it down into first gear.
Peteioz 1 year ago
the way you shift down seems so much easier. how harmful is that to your engine? it seems hard to shift down ever single time when coming to a stop. I'm a beginner btw. :)
ohh yeah, what if you forget what gear you are in!!!! lol

Or have I just got the wrong Idea?
rimfa123 1 year ago
Hey, what kind of helmet are you using? It sounds very quiet and you obviously have a mic in the helmet and it sounds great. I am looking for a good helmet...any thoughts?

Is shifting without using the clutch safe? will it damage your transmission?
Islandsoundzz 1 year ago
@Islandsoundzz its safe if you know how to do it. you have to know at exactly what point the gears line up or else you risk grinding them off.

I really enjoyed your videos...they were very helpful as I am planning my first motorcycle purchase. I don't have much experience riding a motorcycle but I'm thinking of buying a 600 as my first bike. I've heard the 600 may be too much bike for a beginner but I am big guy over 220 lbs. and pretty strong so I figure I need the horsepower.
dccurlybro 1 year ago
I can't wait until I ride!!... because seriously I've watched enough videos on YouTube on how to start your bike and go, how to shift into gears and downshift that I really don't think it's all that hard anymore.
mmhscheer11 1 year ago
thats a sick bike bro.. but i got a few questions.. is it possible to get ur rpm's up an shift without using the clutch or do i use it every time
izzbone28 1 year ago
@izzbone28
u can shift up without using the clutch. i think most riders do that when there racing. but when you shift down its VERY IMPORTANT to USE the clutch. because if you dont and u downshift that might damage the bike.

how do you feel about a beginner learning on a 1000 or 900cc bike? is the learning curve the same or a bit steeper?? whats the difference if you feel ur under controll? is it more difficult to controll? can it be done?
JimiCrack216 1 year ago
Very nice and helpful videos man! I'm getting myself my first motorcycle soon, it's going to be a suzuki sv650s (25kw) because i'm only 18 years old. Do you also think that an sv650s is a good motorcycle to start with? Because everyone recommended that one but i'd like to hear your opinion about it. Thanks

hey i just came from a motorcycle class with westside motorcycle academy .and i was getting really frustrated with the most difficult part of ridding which for me is releasing the clutch while at the same time rolling on the throttle to get the bike into motion!.....i know with practice i will get better, watching your video really helped me out! but i do have one question when you riding,,,say in 5th gear or your "highest gear" is it safe to squeeze the clutch at anytime, so you can down shift
kaykaboopsmarie 1 year ago
I prefer the idea of shifting down with the clutch held in the whole time, it makes shifting a bit quicker (or at least it sounds like it anyway). Is there a particular timing you should stick to when shifting that way, say one every couple of seconds, or can you drop down one per second?
I love how you vloggers like to put up teaching videos, it helps out everyone else in the process.
Keep them coming and ride safe while doing so.
TheKnightsShield 1 year ago
hey,
when you downshift
1. let off the throttle
2. pull in the clutch
3. blip to match engine speed ( if needed)
4. kick down to lower gear
5. let out the clutch
6. pull clutch back in
7. blip to match engine speed ( if needed)
TheKhanvict786 1 year ago
When you are downshifting you state that you just clutch and gear down but when are the front/rear brakes used? Perhaps you should do a vid on braking in conjuction with downshifting, that would be really good.

ive got a question about braking and shifting down as a new rider:
- from 6 to 5 and 5 to 4 do you only use the engine for braking, or also help with the foot brake?
- is it a no go to try to rev it and use the front brake at the same time while shifting down?
- or is better in this case to omit using the engine brake and just pull the clutch and shift down while braking?

hey, is that zx6r your first bike? im just curious because im looking into buying my first bike, and i need to know if its too much power for a novice. also, is it comfortable for extended riding? id be doing a LOT of that... thanks dude!
goforthandeattacos 1 year ago
@goforthandeattacos hey if i were u i would go sit on a couple of bikes before u make your decision. For me the zx6r's seat hurts like hell, but my friend loves it. My confort is the gsxr 600 as it has a narrower seat unlike the cbr600 and zx6r which have wide seats. So see for yourself whats most comfortable. Good Luck :)
Xman44x 1 year ago
So basically if you come to a stopsign, you slow down using yor throttle, and hit the brake once slow. After that it goes back to first gear, then you just accelorate then change gears up again? I got a bit confused when you said you had to slow down, then change down gears. Correct me if i'm worng plz.

do you have to let off the throttle when your about to shift?
masonrox2547 1 year ago
Right, i've watched like 10 video's now and still don't understand shifting down, say your in 6th, then click all the way down as far as you would if you were going from neutral to 1st? or ... ahhh! i'm so damn confused! :[
G3or631 1 year ago
@G3or631 if your in 6th gear and you want to down shift to slow down you have to let off the throttle, click down into fifth and depending on your speed either let out the clutch slowly, or give it a little throttle so theres not so much decompression on the engine and after the clutch is let out you let off the gas, you use the throttle very very very little to rev up the bike while the clutch is engaged.
BS602kxSkater 1 year ago
Here's my way of smooth gear shifting: you're in the first gear, doing 'bout 4000 rpms, squeeze the clutch, put it into second, rev the engine at the rpms you want to reach and slowly release the clutch.
So tell me what you tink please...
And I have one question please: Can you shift from second to neutral like you do from the first, by pressing the lever half-way?
Thanks for this tutorial dude. You're the man!

newsoccerlegend7 1 year ago
Why would pulling the clutch in all the way and just coasting, like you were saying you do, be bad for the engine?
CrzyScottsman 1 year ago
@CrzyScottsman have a bike engine go from 8,000 rpms to 500 in 1 second probably can't be good... i may be totally wrong but I think
