wow what a band,,,but slade were the guvnors, make no mistake,,,noddy and the boys were just so superior to anything that came their way, there comes a time in life when you just got to hold your hand up,,cheers now and join the club,,,youll be made welcome, free tea and buiscuts,,,
@robharding1957 keep yer tea and biscuits, Slade were the poor man's Beatles and very "safe" for young guys to say they liked. T.Rex were more edgy and made some great records.
@hearditman what musical planet are you from,,slade were far superior to t,rex and the rest of the glam bands,,but by the same token l must admit,,bolan did come up with some catchy numbers,,still some tea and biscuits left if your interested,,
Marc at the top of his game, brilliant, gives me goose bumps and takes me right back to 1972.
A boy in my class at school, (Brian Tomkins, Sacred Heart,), was confused about the title, he said to me , "i love that new song by Marc Bolan, .."Man on the roof, is it you?".
@bernadettebaxter I had a similar missunderstanding to this song at the time, but i thought it was 'Marily Lou' (Like Mary Lou). I think we just tried to make sense of the lyrics in our own way. At 9 years old I had never heard of the term 'Guru' let alone a metal one!
wetukman, I was 9 too. I used to wait by the radio for them to play this song.
The first time I saw it on Top of the Pops it sent shivers down my spine.
It might not be this video, as this is at christmas, but there was the same going to negative effect with the picture at the beginning, when standing in front of our black and white TV, Marc's hair went white, and I got a physical rush of some kind. It was my brain releasing endorphins I guess.
Great track by Marc Bolan & T. Rex, which spent 4 weeks at the top of the UK charts, back in May and June of 1972. Back then - in the early summer of that year - who would have guessed that Bolan's time as the 'biggest' pop/rock star in the land was almost over, and that he would never again occupy the number one position in the British singles (or indeed) album charts.
Mr Bolan' reign may have been an ephemeral one; but it was also a glorious one. God rest his soul.
I am again 16 years old when I hear this, sitting in my dark bedroom, listening to Marc Bolan, not really understanding - but instinctively KNOWING that I loved what I was hearing - didn't really understand it and still too young to do anything but turn up the volume on my SONY Clock Radio with the flip digital numerals (1972) only to have my mothers say, "could you PLEASE turn that racket DOWN????" Treasured youthful memory.......
I like this song, but it always seemed slightly like a tossed off idea rather than a finished song. It seems to need another part to pull it together. Now all the Bolan fans will come gunning for me. LOL. Seriously though, I am a fan and do like this song, but Marc always seemed to me to have a short attention span or something. Great ideas, but he didn't always develope them completely. He was utterly unique though.
@tanx54 did no-one ever tell you it's quality that matters, not quantity? Bolan may have rushed out shed loads of product, but Bowie's legacy will be longer-lasting and far more important and influential.
@thetragicyouth I'm not sure where you're coming from with that. Bowie has been pretty prolific - and also has a few duff songs behind him too. Personally I thought any Bolan v Bowie rivalry had been left in the 70s - I love both. the Big rivalry at the time was Slade v T Rex - now I'm middle aged I can see the appeal of both - I was a slade man back then, but prefer T Rex now - but still have the odd yearning to hear Noddy and the boys.
@thepinktent Me too! When it used to come on the radio at the time, it used to send me delirious! That bit in the middle of the song where it goes 'aaaaaaah, yeah, yeah, yeah'=OMG!
@headofapollo Its an amazingly evocative record. I love Bowie & he probably had the greater body of work & career, but Bolan was the forerunner..He made it all possible.
I remember Noel Edmunds had the Zinc Alloy album as his record of the week on Radio 1 , Played a track a day - I specifically remember him playing " Change " and laughing at the end of it ! But Bolan had a lot of good friends on the airwaves ...Radio 1's Johnnie Walker , Stuart Henry from Radio Luxemberg , and many more ! GREAT CLIP !
@Feisty1967 ... have posted such an idea at some other videos from early 60ies or 70ies clips... "Think 'bout constructing those machine, help me" ... :)
Metal Guru. One of the great tunes if not the greatest of that era and certainly my favourite of them all. Bolan had such charisma. He stood out in the crowd of glam rockers of that period and wont ever be forgotten.
@hoddlewaddle man, at least you were the lucky enough for not to grow up listening to crap like justin bieber, hannah montana and the jonas brothers...
Was 12 when this was out. So was just coming into the music thing. Couldnt figure why his songs were soooo shorrrt. BUt they were great. Kinda looks like Marie Osmond after a really bad night out..LOL.
