  • This engine is from up north take it to the car wash and get that engine washed its a losing battle to keep it in to condition if its salted over and rusted.

  • Question...I turned on my car to check the air pump it pumps for a while then stops, Should the air pump continue to pump air? is that what i need to replace for my 410 code?

  • @skylarjh88 It is normal for the pump to run only for a short time at start up.

  • Is the air pump supposed to turn off after about 10 seconds?

  • This helped me understand what my mechanic is talking about, but we cannot find part number 1997265, the secondary air injection switching solenoid valve, anywhere. GM Parts tell us that it is discontinued but do not offer an alternative. Any ideas?

  • @clm3nd I checked my sources and they do not have that solenoid.I would be rushing to the salvage yards and getting as many as i could.

  • hi i took the hose from the switch air pump solenoide to the air pump valve for vaccum, the car runs nicely now,the code still on but iam looking to the air pump solenoid switch part, after change that the code should be gone thanks richpin

  • I'm curious as to what the switch is that you refference there. Not the check valve, but the switch with the electrical connector that's mounted on it. I beleive mine might be bad, but I can't for the life of me find out what the name of it is.

  • @TheJerimiahwolf I call it a AIR Pump Solenoid

  • @richpin06a Great video Rich. All components seem to be working on my Saturn but there was a buildup in the tube. One question I have. With the air tube disconnected I tried to blow compressed air into the exhaust manifold but it did not seem to flow. I also tried with the EGR valve removed. Should air flow through the manifold? I also was able to pass a wire into the manifold hole about 8 inches to the left and then to the right. Seems all clear. Thanks and keep up the nice work.

  • @ramayo824 Yes air should pass through the manifold.Seeing you have the tube off start up the engine, exhaust should come out the hole in the manifold if it does not you have blockage.

  • @richpin06a Rich, No air flow at the exhaust manifold port where the tube attaches with the engine running. I'll have to pull the exhaust manifold. I also had a P0401 and found lots of gunk in the intake port to the EGR valve. It was like tar That's nice and clear now. Had to remove the throttle valve to see it. P0401 has not come back. Thanks again! Bob

  • good thing my car is a saturn people at sears was goin to charge $80 an hr to figure it out...

    Thanks!!!

  • My Mercedes CLK 320 1998 gets that PO410 fault code every two weeks, mostly during the drive cycle. I guess the checks should be air pump, diverter valves for carbon on both cylinder head banks and O2S1 upstream of TWC. Can't forget current and vacuum. Anymore more food for thought would be appreciated.

  • @methunshow I think you have it covered.

  • @methunshow When you test the air pump its not enough to just confirm rotation do a scanner analysis with an amp clamp to asses the pumps viability. It takes a strong pump to irrigate the exhaust manifold against exhaust pressures. Check the diverter valve for vacuum continuity and mechanical actuation all the way back to the intake manifold. Do a frequency and voltage check of your O2 pre CAT sensors. Check with mercedes for updates in your Engine Control Module [ECM] software

  • hi i have the same problem p0411 it shows me secondary air injection i chuck the air pump it wasn't work i chuck it it work by different power i chuck air pump wire there is no power in it i'm wondering if oxygen sensor not working it happen like that ? thank u for your help

  • Your Saturn videos are extremely helpful. Thanks your video helped track down the clogged tube entering the header. Thanks for the help on P0410 code.

  • Part 3. The ECU then concludes the test by stopping the secondary air pump, closing the pump solenoid releasing the long term trim data, and opening the EVAP Canister valve. The point of all this is to test not only the secondary air supply being free of blockages but that the oxygen sensor is responsive [within specified test limits] to the presence and absence of supplementary air. The ecu will trigger a CODE if any test fails. some test occurs during normal drive cycle with a warm engine

  • Part 2. the ECU looks for no change in the oxygen sensor trim data. The air pump solenoid then open allowing air in the exhaust manifold. The ecu looks for a lean condition in the O2 sensors, which increases fuel spray and heats up the catalytic converter. If the O2 sensor does not register [within a specified time period] no change with the valve closed or no lean condition with the valve open then the P0410 code is triggered. The ECU then stops the air pump and looks for a richer condition.

  • Part 1. The secondary air system and the P0410 code is one of the most complicated faults. P0410 is a generic code and dependant on your vehicle, indicates different things. The secondary air pump activates as directed by the ECU,on cold start and various times during the drive cycle. During cold start the air pump activates, but the solenoid valves is held closed. the EVAP canister valve is closed. Air is prevented from entering the exhaust manifold. long term trim data in the ECU is inhibited.

  • Thanks Rich , great troubleshooting. My moms diverter valve was bad and you tracked it down for me.

  • @thisismark1 That's what i love to hear great job.

  • hey, got the same car, the tube going to the header was clogged so i cleaned it out and the vauum lines work perfect. everythings working like it should. could it be the ects? and also while that pipe is off the exhaust i sprayed carb cleaner in there and started it up while the pippe was off to burn it off and noticed no air flow comming out of the hole. is it possible theres still more carbon build up inside?

  • @ilovebrandie417 Exactly you will have to remove the exhaust manifold and clean the air passage way in it and the cylinder head.

  • I found on my ...1995 Eagle Talon ESI... the secondary air intake injection is a factory recall and and is replaced by Chrysler or Mitsubishi dealership for ...FREE...

  • I don't know if this question has been asked yet but my air injection pump seems to work intermittently. Sometimes it will come on when it's supposed to and sometimes it won't. I've had the P0410 code for about a month. I did not check to see if it was fuse because it still comes on. I've checked the EGR(diverted valve) and all of the hoses associated with it and everything looks ok. Should I replace the air pump or is a weak signal from the PCM?

  • @geriko1 Remember the pump will only come on when the engine is cold at start up for a very short time.Try this clear the code then does the code come back when the pump is working or not.The biggest reason you get this code is because the exhaust manifold and cylinder head passage ways are plugged with carbon.

  • you sound kinda like ray romano

  • @samskeet2 LMAO he does

  • I thought it was a problem if there was no current . But you say it's a problem if there is current getting to the pump.

  • @OUfootballAuthority If there is voltage and the pump is not working there is a problem with the pump.

  • @richpin06a I have pulled the pump off the cover of the air pump but it's not spinning. And I tested the voltage to the wire and it read 3 so it must be getting some sort of power. It must be the air pump. But Why would it go bad in the first place?

  • Comment removed

  • also there is no vacuum at the second hose you pulled out, no vacuum is on that... but there is current going to the switch.. so idk if the switch is bad but if you see my other comment there is no current going to the secondary air pump

  • there is no current going to the secondary air pump.. it there supposed to be current going to the secondary air pump at all times or does it only engage at certain times? I fed the secondary air pump current and it started to spin so I know the pump is good, but there is no current going to it, what causes this? I changed the relay and the fuse is good

  • @bradrj1029 The air pump only runs a very short time on start up only.

  • @richpin06a

ok I believe the switch at 2:22 is bad.. what is that called? Thanks

  • @bradrj1029 vacuum control solenoid

  • @richpin06a Ok I checked for current on start up and waited for 2 minutes to see if there was current but there was none.. what can I do?

  • @bradrj1029 I would remove the air pump relay and check for voltage and see if there is a trigger signal from the computer.

  • @richpin06a

Ok so take the relay off and test for current where the relay plugs in? There are 4 prongs on the relay, where would I check for voltage?

  • @bradrj1029 I do not have one here handy to check but if you look at the relay it will guide you to which pin is which.

  • My midas said I need to replace the secondary air pump for a 2002 saturn sl1 2002. Do you know where I can it? my mechanic can't seem to find it anywhere, they tried the junkyard and there aren't any saturn dealers on long island anymore. CAn you help me?

  • @vyperleo check you inbox because it is not letting me post the web site here.

  • Is this pump fairly noisy? Is the pump variable speed or is it on or off. I got this noise for about 10 seconds and then it fades away when cold. No codes.

  • need your help where can i buy diverted valve? my air pump is working but air wont pass the valve, can you suggest where can i get one.

  • @SHER547 GETSATURNPARTS. COM has that part for a good price.

  • @richpin06a they have diverter valve and it cost only $ 17, do you think its the right parts, i find one that is called air pump control valve but the photo is different, the site is autopartswarehouse, com it says OES genuine air pump control valve part number W0133-1800112. and it cost $68. i really have a hard time looking for this part for almost two years now hope you can help me.

  • @SHER547 $17. does seem low for that valve give them a call and ask if it is the valve you want they have a toll free number.

  • @richpin06a THANK YOU VERY MUCH, i called them and gave me the part # 21210000 listed as VALVE ASM-SECD AIR INJ. i do hope that this is the right parts. in other site there is one listed as OES Genuine Air Pump Control Valve.

  • @SHER547 That is the right part number but the price should be around $62.00

  • @richpin06a thanks rich, i got one from auto parts warehouse and it works perfect... you are great teacher....

  • I checked all of the hoses on my 2001 saturn and found no clogs, but I have hot air flowing back toward the pump. I noticed the problem when my first pump was completely melted. I replaced it thing it was defective, but within 20 minutes, the new pump was destroyed too. Any idea what's causing air to back up towards the pump?

Thanks for a great video and any help you can provide.

  • i have a 2000 saturn looks just like your video. the air pump turns on when cold for only 10sec. then turns off and stays off. Is there some kind of control between the pump and fuse box? Thanks RR

  • @rios19711 There is nothing between the relay and pump. The pump is only suppose to run at start up on a cold engine for a short time.

  • your good i like this video

  • Is there another name for the "diverter valve"? There was no air coming out of is and I took it in and looked online, but I noone knew what it was and I couldn't find anything online. Mine is a 2002 saturn, so I'm not sure if it is called something different or what...

  • @thomasmarkleLook up air pump control valve

  • @richpin06a Thanks for the reply, it ended up being a "Secondary Air injection valve." Should you be able to blow air through the valve? I bought a new one, and I still was not able to feel any air going through it.

  • Richpin I hope you can help. I checked voltage at the plug to the air pump and get nothing, i than pulled the large hose going to the diverter valve and dont feel any air pumping while the car is running. My conclusion is it has something to do with the wiring, I tried replacing the relay and it did nothing, and the fuse checked out ok. What else is there to check. I cant imagine the wiring being bad but maybe a bad ground, what do you think, if so, where is the air pump grounded/ Help plz.

  • @living4fire Have you checked the 10A EGR fuse in the underhood fuse panel that is were the air pump gets its voltage

  • @richpin06a I did not see a fuse that said EGR in the underhood fuse box but I checked one that said Emissions (10 amp) and it checked out good. What would be the next thing I should check, still no power to the air pump. Thanks.

  • @living4fire Check the 30A fuse labeled air pump then pull the relay and check the socket for voltage if all that checks out swap the relay

  • @richpin06a 30A air pump fuse was checked previously, I had also bought a new relay previously thinking that was the problem but it still didnt work with the new relay. Both the old and new relay I couldn't feel a click when having my finger on top of it while the car was started, but was able to feel a click when the car was shut off. I assume this means the relay is getting voltage, if not how would I go about checking it for voltage, thanks.

  • @living4fire I do not have a Saturn with a air pump handy to tell you which pins on the fuse box to check at the present time.

  • @living4fire Living4fire, I also got no voltage there. I ran a wire from the positive terminal of the battery directly to the pump plug (red terminal on battery to red wire on electric connector, black to black) and the pump ran directly off the battery. So I suspected relay or fuse, but first connected the pump back to the wiring harness and then I followed the vacuum hoses like in the video--and had no vacuum! I traced the long one back to the intake manifoldand it was unplugged. it works now!

  • Great video! Repair went quickly! My 0410 code was intermittant . I could clear it but it would return in a week or two. The air pipe was severely constricted with carbon (1/4" opening at the diverter, with an1/8" at manifold.) I cleaned up the exhaust manifold with brush, wire, carbcleaner and air. So far so good! I hope I didnt crap up my oxygen sensor! Thanks~gk

  • great video, but i still have a problem, I have this code on my saturn l100 (2.2l) and i cannot find any of the components air pump, check valve etc. I looked in a lot of places behind the bumper cover, under the car but I can't find it. Can somebody help?

  • really helpful video. One question, you mention the "switching valve" the orange valve. What is the real name of that part? I can stinking find it! thanks!!

  • richpin06a,

Thanks for this great video ..I found the problem with my SL2's Air Injection system. I went though your troubleshooting steps, and determined that nothing was wrong with any of the components (hoses, pump, valves, etc).

I concluded that the exhaust manifold was clogged. I had everything open and cleaned the manifold with pipe cleaners, and the SES light and P0410 went away by itself after removing carbon buildup. Thanks for your video - your work is very much appreciated !!!

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I did everything in this video and everything checks out. I then removed the exhaust manifold and cleaned the channel on the manifol and even cleaned out the small ports, got about an inch of wire in the small port holes and sprayed them out as best I could. I still get a new code of p0410. Is there anything else that it could be? Are there any additives that would help to remove any remaining gunk in the small holes next to each port on the head?

  • great video! Quick question. How much air should be blowing out of air pump. I can't seem to feel any air coming out of the air pump or it's very very faint.

  • Richpin06a. Thanks for all of your videos. On this one I have a question. I've checked the pump and it runs, the air flows properly through the diverter valve as well, and there is air flowing through the pipe into the exhaust manifold. I'm still getting this code and not sure what else it could be. Could it be my exhaust manifold??

  • @bxxpeace Yes,i will make a note of this in the video if after cleaning the pipe if you still get a code remove the exhaust manifold and clean it and the passage ways in the cylinder head.

  • how do you do the drive cycle? or can you d/c the battery to clear the code?

  • @dieudonneMC Drive cycle:normal drive around town then minimum five mile drive on expressway at a steady 60 mph. Then let the vehicle cool down completely and do it again. On the s-series you can use a scan tool or remove the PCM-B fuse to clear the computer.

  • @richpin06a thanks! I'll give it a try. Didn't mean to post the same ? twice, it didn't show up when I typed it the first time. Is that PCM B fuse with the other fuses?

  • The PCM B fuse is a 10 amp fuse located in the underhood fuse block.

  • @richpin06a Well, thanks again. I found that every thing worked except that diverter valve, which was clogged along with that pipe that attaches to the manifold. I cleaned all of those and still no flow out of diverter valve so now Im looking for the part.

  • what about clearing the code? can you simply d/c the battery and clear that out? Is there a drive cycle to do as well?

  • Great video

  • Great video, well done.

  • Very Good helpful video,,, !!!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you you saved my ass

  • i had this code and it was a real head ache i had checked all hoses and replaced the valve cleaned the carbon code stayed on what the problem was a small check valve that was bad its between the vacuum hose and needs to be replaced if bad

  • Thanks for sharing

  • Thank you very much for the video. Followed your troubleshooting and found a disconnected vacuum line at the back of the engine. Immediately fixed the problem.

  • Thanks. I followed this and found that there was simply a loose wire on the pump itself. Fixed the problem and the car runs great!

  • thank you

  • Glad i could help.

  • Thanks very much for posting this easy to follow video! I had the same code and we just cleaned out the exhaust manifold, and the check engine light came off. What a relief! Thanks again.

  • i have a 04 vw golf and i got the PO411 CODE but i would like to know if the pump its always running or only after a short period of time? cause when i turn on the car i dont see or hear anything that tells me that the pump is working, but i unplugged the MAF sensor and it started working

    help please?

    please help?

  • I have this engine code, but have not been able to fix it just yet. What would happen if I just continued driving it as is for a while? So far the car is running fine.

  • my car doesn't have that, should it?

  • Depends on what year you have.

  • i got a 69 chevy and i got air injection.

  • Is the diverter valve failure common? Is this system reliable or does it have common failure?

  • The most common reason for a PO410 is carbon building up and blocking the port in the exhaust manifold.

  • Richpin, I recently had this code and it shutoff on its own. Now when I start up the car (cold) the pump does not come on. I drive 2 miles down the road shut car off and the start the car and the pump comes on. I cleaned the pipe from the diverter valve and the manifold. I pulled the air pump and did not have any water come out of it. I also have the new brass ECTS installed less than a year ago. Thanks for any info. Your posts are the best.

  • Do you know what it means if the air pump has a little water in it?

  • In my video i refer to a valve called the diverter valve. When this valve fails it will let exhaust gases seep into the air pump. The exhaust gases contain condensation (water)which will ruin the bearings.

  • Do you do Isuzu Rodeos as well? ;)

  • not yet

  • As always, your videos show me exactly what I need to keep my wife's 02 Saturn running perfectly!!!!

  • what year saturns have this air pump?

  • 99-02

  • I have the same gloves.....cool!!
