@kn9ioutom I can't afford to buy gold but silver is within my reach. For me to buy gold requires saving most of my college money for over a year. That strategy is not very useful. My great uncle buys gold and silver, but mostly gold because it's less volatile, it holds a higher value to weight ratio, and most of all he can afford it.

I've always considered preparing for any survival/emergencies a form of insurance. The same reason I purchase car, life, health, and home insurance, to insure I can continue after a life altering event. I have a couple of months worth of food, water, generators, fuel, medication/first aid, cooking supplies and temporary shelter and lots of firearms/ammo stored away. If I survive the event, at least my family will have a chance. Better to have and not need it, than need it and not have it.

The generator might not be worth it unless it runs on diesel or propane and you saved up a plentful supple. forget about gas/petro all together it is way too dangous to store at the average home.During a collapse it is going to be expensive to obtain any type of fuel.Try this insted:
some 200 watt Solar panels with a 6000 watt sinewave invertor and some 100 amp hour or larger batterys. That is the setup that will last and last ,add a wind turbine for night and overcast days .

@GoatHollow You fridge only requires an hour or two of run time to maintain it's cool temp providing your not in it all the time. This should keep your run time on the generator down to a minimum... that's what we did during hurricane ike... worked great.
@TheUnNerved A hurricane and full blown (Permanent) collapse are two different animals. I still say that eventually you will not have any gas to run a generator. Might I suggest other forms of food preservation, home canning, a root cellar, Ice house, dehydrating, pickling. A collapse might last decades. Great job... Thumbs up!!! I know all too well how much time you spent editing. Btw. don't bother with buying a generator, there won't be any gas to run it. You are better off with a wood stove, and lot's of firewood.

@GoatHollow You fridge only requires an hour or two of run time to maintain it's cool temp providing your not in it all the time. This should keep your run time on the generator down to a minimum... that's what we did during hurricane ike... worked great.

@TheUnNerved A hurricane and full blown (Permanent) collapse are two different animals. I still say that eventually you will not have any gas to run a generator. Might I suggest other forms of food preservation, home canning, a root cellar, Ice house, dehydrating, pickling. A collapse might last decades. Not trying to be a troll or anything, just suggesting that a generator, is iffy to feed. (You could however power it on wood gas generation... I did video on that)

@GoatHollow Oh I do can and dehydrate, I have a small solar setup with a battery back up, but my point was stretching out what you have:) where I live, the water table is too high for a root cellar, and the ground never freezes so no ice houses. I've had to learn salt preservation JUST IN CASE. Thanks for the input. We can get the word out.

A very similar scenario would be an EMP attack causing the catastrophic failure of our electricity grids.

Guess how power companies generate power? That's right, supplies (gas, uranium, oil) are delivered to them by trucks. Trucks with drivers who need to get paid to buy fuel. Trucks that load up fuel from trains that are run by men who need to get paid.

Food shortgages, Gas shortages, no oil or Propane delivery, yes, but to suggest that within that amount of time that the POWER COMPANIES would not be able to provide power is kind of stupid.
