  • He uses a Deja vibe 2 to get that sound. Not a flanger, and not a univibe, trower quit using univibe in the seventies. It's nit distortion either, it's overdrive that he uses. They are a bit different.

  • In the last 8 years I have seen Trower twice, both times he was smoking.

  • I've seen him twice in a small DC club around the time Passion came out and all I have to say is he delivered. He appreciated the crowd and let everyone know it with his and the bands playing. Tight. Great singer whose name escapes me too. I wish I could see him with Jack.

  • @mor54 Davey Pattison.

  • If Jimi was alive he wouldn't be playing his solos with the same old 70's tone these days, he was so far ahead of his time.

  • I think your wrong the gear now days is junk compaired to the old handwired cranked tube amps

  • Shame, too much wah for these days

  • Flange and distortion a little wha can do it and lots of raw feeling and Emotion!

  • @Distilled13 i think that is an univibe not a flanger

  • @pabletelli very true it may be .. I get that sound from a flanger and my Cry baby though a little more work maybe ;)

  • Does anybody know what effect he is using? DAMN......I have to tell you guys....There are so many effects out there that duplicate the Hendrix Sound that you don't even have to do it in his sound. Trower has the feel. That deep soulful feel. There is another guitar player with the same kind of feel. How about Richie Blackmore? Right? Correct me if I am wrong. Isn't this the same effect Hendrix had in Voodoo Chile when he played with Bill Cox and Buddy Miles? ????

  • robin trower is still a beast on the strat!

  • I saw him in '09, about 3 weeks ago, still kickin ass!!!

  • The person a few posts back ,said it right. He was the most underrated player that existed. I have seen him live several times. Twice at the RoseLand Theater. We know he is aging, we all do but if you like Rock, even these 3rd generation kids need to at least do some research on the Great R.T.

  • Robin Trower taught Jimmy H everything, look how old he is, Nobody even heard of Jimmy till montery 67. This guy was playing this stuff in 64 , The beatles huh? remember what ws pop then. A Legend, but never sold records, he was too far ahead of his time. But listen and enjoy.

  • I still have his records...Hmmm

  • @bigdaveaztempe

Trower didn't change his playing style until he was greatly influenced by Hendrix and left Procol Harem. Procol Harem does not a Hendrix make. The reason Trower is Trower is because Hendrix was Hendrix (first). Trower has said it himself many times. I too have copied the Hendrix style. I Love it but I certainly didn't come up with it anymore than Trower did.

  • First of all, is "Jimi". Second, yes he is old, but Jimi would be 3 years older now, big dave. Then, this guy was playing THIS stuff after 74'. And Jimi Hendrix was really notorious in England after october 66', yes, yes, people heard about him before Monterey. So search for facts not fiction before you post your comments.

  • Robin said he was influenced by Jimi. He said that in an interview.

But, i do like Robin's playing.

  • Turn the volume down and you can still hear it. This dude has feeling and soul. One of the most underated musicians of all time. Do it...turn the volume down and watch the video.

  • HE IS TROWER!!!

Love them both but to see him live in the day and you know he is great still recall the 4 shows I saw.

No fight love all real rock of the day and what there is now...

  • I love Hendrix but I only need to hear 10 seconds of that blindfolded and I know it's Trower. Similar to Hendrix yes, but Trower is Trower alone.

  • so what thats like yngwie then you got joe gump and the rest its the songs they put out that matters to us

  • hendix couldn't play some of these licks...this guy is 60Z+ yesars old and only he acan play some of these riffs

  • Hendrix could play these riffs, dude.

  • Yes he could--and did.

From 1967-70--these two stood damn near stood alone-together--playing this experimental bombast tone laden style .

Then Jimi laid down--Robin still standing--tall.

  • If people are saying that they seem confused why Trower gets confused with Hendrix,I say to them "Clean the wax out of your ears". The man has an identity complex. He wants to be Hendrix. Play this audio only to any rock fan and I challenge you to find anyone who doesn't immediately say "That's Hendrix!".

  • You Gotta love the facial expressions.I'll see him play every chance I get.Rock On !!!

  • He still reigns and thousands of new guitarists are copying his style because he is like you guys mentioned a Master of the strataocaster and no one, I mean no one can play likeRobin Trower. And he doesn't sound like Hendrix like some contemporaries.

  • Robin Trower is flat-out one of the all-time greatest guitarists EVER. His bluesy, sad, crying feel is totally unique. I was always confused by people saying he sounds like Hendrix. I hear the influence, but Trower has a voice all his own on guitar.

    ...and I'm a drummer!

  • @dmreeoogdaq

Robin Trower is a great guitarist and I love the guy but make no mistake he sound exactly like Jimi did in his band of gypsies days....that thick lava lamp tone that gets you high when you listen... he added many of his emotions etc.. but its Hendrix that sparked all of that.

  • what a bad ass guitarist........

  • Like fine wine....gets better with age....thank goodness for people born with guitars in their hands.

  • Amen.

  • LONG LIVE ROBIN TROWER

  • Im so jealous of the person who took this footage...that's as close as it gets. It's a long way to Australia :(

  • it was great buy my ears were fried

  • I also have seen him many times since the early 70's and he is as good now as then great

  • @cedarchoper58 The cars lasted longer, the radios lasted longer, the records sounded better than the cds, the speakers lasted longer, also sounded better, even better if they were made of wood, wood gives everything a beautiful sound.

  • If you haven't seen Robin Trower live then you haven't got a clue about how he sounds.I went to see Robin earlier this year (I last saw him 20 years ago!) at Birkenhead, UK and he was absolutely AWESOME ! His tone and tuning is unlike anything or anybody and he is Fantastic. One of the best rock gigs I have ever been to and I've seen them all over 40 years. And I tell you to see such and 'old' looking guy producing music like that was a smack in the face to any one who thinks old is old.

  • Grace Slick said "There is nothing more pathetic than an ageing rock star!"

    Well... she can BLOW ME!

  • Well thats exactly what grace slick is. Robin Trower on the other hand is a great improving musician.

  • I've attended several of his performances. He never fails to mesmerize his audience. It's a class act!

I wouldn't walk across the street to see Grace Slick!

  • Only man I know with back to back top ten sellers in the seventies three years runnin!

Top that with what you hear today!

  • Some you people are ignorant. He was playing when your parents were in school. He looks great, sounds great and play's flawless. The audio is bad because his show is always LOUD. Go see him and you will never post anything stupid like this again. That is what amps sound like when you have a shitty mic in front of it.

  • Thanks I agree the audio sucks cause I was dirrectly in front of his amp at head level and he looks old but he plays young and great still. I have seen him many times since the early 70's and he still wails like a god

  • woah

  • Sounds bad...he looks old and tired...sad

It doesn't seem fair to grow old, dry up and blow away...Love you Robin T. Doc

  • He may look old & tired but he is still a stellar musician....at our age, those feelings of youth are still there, they're just on the inside. Behind his expressive face, he still feels like a young rock God.

  • Says the nothing happening chump that nobody knows.

  • I think it may 'sound' a bit 'off' (only slightly) because of the video's audio. It does have an effect on the sound sometimes, so that may be one of the reasons why you found this "sad"?

He 'looks old' because, well, that's what happens when you get older. He's 63. What do you expect him to look like?

Age is just a number anyway. It's all about your attitude.

    He's rockin', as always!

  • If this was @ La Zona Rosa, I was there. Great show. Had been many years since I saw him. Small club.

  • Only 4 ratings! come'on folks, give the man some stars!

  • NIce univibe sound hes got here. he was one of the guys to use it

  • Dang, He is DEFINITELY DIMING THIS AMP on 11! WO! Well, When you got that kind of scratch why not right. but is it needed in cludb this size. unless im not seeing the 5ooo people iout there.

  • Wow!

First heard his stuff in 1974, and he still sounds as good!

  • Excelente'. However, I was too busy absorbing the bending and swirling of the notes. Should of been recording some of that too. Oh, how I wish I had recorded Day of the Eagle/Bridge of Sighs. Those being my old-time favorites were way out there in the far reaches of galactic psycho-funka-fuzza-delic guitar heaven.

  • Too bad you cant hear the rest of the band. Must have had the mike jammed in the marshalls.

  • So the 'song never played live before' is revealed! Sweet...
