  • Buenísima explicación. Ahora ya tengo una buena idea de como hacer esto correctamente. Gracias :-)

  • Great tutorial,thanks Edna!!:-)

  • I think ur so cute and I love the way you go threw the instructions very carefully so that we understand.

  • if u dont have scraper wat can u use to replace it?

also how do u make the icing ( is it butter cream)

  • @saraisawesome007 I used other things but what I like about this scraper is that

it has a perfect L shape angle that makes sure you do a straight job.

I do have them available i my website if you don't find them locally

  • i always run out of buttercream... how much do you double/triple you recipe to cover a 10' and an 8' inch? thanks!! -Briana

  • @TippToe2008 To control quality I do one batch at a time. To cover an 8 do around 4 batches. How much you use depends on how much you put on the cake.

  • I love watching your videos. I made a cake the other day and I made cream cheese icing. I did a crumb coat (I think) and put it in the fridge to set. When I did the second coat I can't seem to get it smooth. When I use the paper towel it always sticks to the icing. Am I not letting it sit long enough?

  • @slmitc31 Is it a crusting buttercream? if it is, it might be too soft

  • What kind of icing is that?

  • @2010Bieber Crusting buttercream, the recipe is in my website

  • You're so talented!

  • just want to say i love your cake designs. also want to say thank you for being on you tube cause i have learnt quite a bit from you on cake designs and flower making

  • @zephrina1 Thanks so much!

  • edna,

thanks for all the advice ^^ really helped ALOT <3

  • Would you use that instead of fondant please?

Also how do you make the icing please?

    Many Thanks.

  • @LameLikeEric Check my website.all the tutorials are there!

  • Hi Edna...I'm new at cake decorating. Worked for Safeway as a decorator for 5 yrs and I just wanna say, I've never seen the paper towel technique. I'm curious about it too...I'm gonna give it a try. :) I love the white buttercream you use. Is it your own recipe? Thanks for sharing. :)

  • @xkpopxluverx562 you can get one at the dollar store

  • @xkpopxluverx562 I do have them available in my website under the webstore, tool section

  • Making a 3 tier wedding cake and have a thic crumb coat on the bottom (14") tier, can I still put that second layer of icing on it to get a smooth layer? It doesn't look bad right now, but I think the second layer on would really make it look better. Also, do you wait till the crumb coat has crusted first? thx!! love your videos <3

  • @stratsgalore You don't want a thick crumbcoat, it will be too much icing and the weight can make everything fall down. Take some icing off. Put in the fridge and let harden before applying second coat.

  • i meant to say how many layers is this cake

  • @eyelovemusic214 2 cakes of 2 inches tall 3 layers

  • how many layers is this particular

  • too much icing!

  • @TheJthawkins Most of it is taken away with the scrapper

  • WOW...U PRETTY...CHULA

  • I just made a video for the ULTIMATE way to smooth the top of a cake...check-out my YouTube channel, ceps92.

  • why wont the icing gets onto the peper towel?

  • Your crumb coat looks great to me:) Do you use any different methods for icing a square cake? Thanks!

  • @ldpd2009 Same but the corners are a bit more time consuming

  • So how do you get it off the board after you have iced it? Do you use a cake lifter?

  • @reedsgems A spatula and my hand. Check the how to stack a video so you can see.

  • I appreciate your meticulousness... very nice!

  • Edna, can I tell you that this has been the best tutorial on how to ice a cake I've seen so far on youtube. You make it look so effortless. I make buttercream from scratch, traditional, non-vegetable shorting. I'm going to sub to you, and check out your other videos. :)

  • @picantesworld77 thanks for the complements! ;)

  • if i dont have viva paper towel can i use something else to replace it

  • @sarahsarahj1981 foam painting roller.. ;)

  • your icing is very white! i love it!

  • Edna , I love how easy you make these tutorials , do you give classes anywhere I would love to learn from an expert like you ,,

  • hey what kind of iceing cream did you used?whipecream?

  • @rickyjay19 No, it's crusting buttercream, the recipe is in my website. You can't use the paper with whipped cream

  • Thanks! Very helpful...and you're so pretty. :-)

And I love your scraper too, that would be a lifesaver for me.

  • @M0N3t7 Thanks!

  • CAN YOU DO A VIDEO ON HOW YOU DO YOUR CRUMB COAT, BECAUSE THAT ICING IS HARD TO SPREAD ON A BARE CAKE WITH OUT RIPPING IT. DO YOU USE THE PASTRY BAG TO DO THE CRUMB COAT OR DO YOU USE THE OFFSET SPATULA?

  • @MISZLICIAWADE I will do at some point!

  • @tonedna1 -- What frosting recipe are you using I think my problem is getting the right frosting recipe mine is a basic buttercream and crusting but it does not smooth as easy are yours looks though

  • Subscribed, Your a great teacher!

  • Your awesomely talented and I have learned so much from you. Thank you! :)

  • Great video!

I'm on the lookout for a really great crusting buttercream icing, so I can deliver cakes in plenty of time without having to worry about the icing softening up and melting.

How do you get your icing so smooth, without air bubbles?

  • @stumpystubs Dont over mix your icing and don't use a wisk. I have a buttercream tutorial

  • hi... i just want to ask... after puting an icing.... do i need to wait for an hour/s before using a paper to smooth it? and is it butter cream icing? can i have a recipe if you dont mind ^^...

    thank you.....

    that was a nice video...

  • @deniellemhey check on my website for the recipe under the recipe link, Look for crusting buttercream. You should be able to do it right away. If the paper sticks, it means your icing is too thin.

  • @tonedna1

but how about the substitute for mirengue powder? thanks ^^

  • Your videos are so imforamtive and thank you for all the tips you have given me. But I just wanted to ask one question, I was wondering whether you froze or refridgerated your cakes before crumb coating it?

  • @SarahSmileMm It's crusting buttercream

  • @tonedna1 Your videos have been so helpful!! How long should I let the first coat sit before I put the second on? Thanks again!

  • that would be a good video if the final product wasn't crooked .

  • @2hotinaz Sound like a hater...thanks for the support

  • @Exportlover Sad thats all you can get from it..but my cakes are not crooked.

  • @tonedna1 oh, i live in england (uk) and here we have 3 different coverings for cakes. we have the fondant then we have the frosting but we also have icing. look just like wot ur doing. it is made the usual way of egg whites and p/sugar but to a very stiff but spreadable consistancy. thats why was a little confused....lol looks brill love ur vids....

  • hi edna,

how come your icing is pure white, even after using butter. can we add white icing color to it

    please advise.thanks

  • @pf4963 Use less butter and compensate with high ratio and some butter extract.

  • thank you so much!

  • Hi Edna! I really enjoy watching your videos, but I was wondering if the buttercream you were using here was the same as your recipe for BC in your other tutorial video? Thx!

  • @QuestionGirly1 This one has 1/4 cup less butter and compensate with high ratio for the rest of the butter and some butter extract and almond extract. But basically is the same

  • thanks edna. u make it look so easy....lol i guess the more i practise the better ill get. ive only been doing it since june 2010. i have a wedding cake comming up, a 25th bday cake and a t-shirt villa/celtic cake aswell....

  • the thing i have a problem with is putting the icing on. u have a gud thick layer in there but wen i do it i tend to scrap most of it back off so u can see the sponge as im quite heavy handed...lol defo need more practise at this.....love ur work edna

  • @pist43 It does takes practice! You are already figuring your problem, just keep at it!

  • @sweetweety252 No, baskin robins uses a whipped recipe.

  • @tonedna1 Oh OK Thanks! After you bake the cake, what do you do?

  • Linda- Cuantas clases de icings/frostings hay?

Y cual es tu preferida? Muchas Gracias

  • @boysselle Never ice a cake the same day you bake it. Put it in the fridge well sealed and ice it the next day.

  • Edna, I just iced my cake with your buttercreme frosting and my cake is falling apart as I try to crumb coat it. I cant even get my frosting to stick.......any suggestions????

  • @MrsKNolte Cake should be cold, not just baked. If it still breaks, add a bit more liquids to buttercream

  • @MrsKNolte Did you let the cake cool first?

  • I just iced my first cake today ....mine doesn't look quite as good ;) ....not even close!

However, I thought this video was great and definitely something to aspire to :) Thanks!

  • Edna, please tell us the definition of the "crumb-coat" and the recipe for a "crusting" butter cream-what is the one ingredient which causes the crusting?. Is it true that in order to get really "white" cake or frosting that we need to use "crisco" shortening which has hydrogenated oil in it? Could we use coconut oil which is actually healthy?
