another really excellent vid. Chris Martins work always gets me inspired and alot of it actually makes me laugh out loud, in a very good way (those bread paintings are so daft they are amazing). That does not happen often enough in my opinion.
This has nothing to with buyers collectors etc. I don't see why you let someone like eenkjet get under your skin james.. In this case it is really a matter of taste. There are no precepts that say chris is changing the face of modern art, how ever stylistically this work is positively relevant at the moment. This video introduced me to paintings of such grand scale, there for the work is doing something. If you want to be removed from the formality of the work as much as possible eenk chill bra.
These paintings are deceptive . Have you watched a real good blues guitar player and thought I can do that? Well then you get home pick up your guitar and realize you can't do that. The paintings have a definate signature and I like them.
Don't listen to Charles Saatchi, don't listen to Jerry Saltz, don't listen to Bob Nickas, don't listen to the curators of America's major museums, don't listen to the hundreds of New York artists who are fans, and don't listen to the greatest art collectors in the world who are buying Chris's work, they're all wrong, listen to eenkjet.
@jameskalm i coudn't give a rats ass about what's going on in the art world. because it's irrelevant to how i develop my work. if you want to be true to yourself, that is the only way you can go. for those lusting for the limelight and willing to dumb their work down. go right ahead. there are plenty of buyers out there that will compensate one for hard intelligent work. in fact keeping your sales to around $10-20k per month is healthy. money corrupts the work.
@jameskalm that is where the meme comes in. the HISTORY. trying to fit into some pages, be accepted by such, be seen by such, be shown at such, so many tastes, so many forces working against self expression. no time for hiatus for the sake of historical significance. by the time the artist is done, there's nothing left but derivative art history stew. being shown in a museum or often than not is a sign of personal creative failure, because of the forces that wrought the work.
@kidluna if i drive down montrose there is this EXACT kind of work leaning up against the apartments of hipsters here and there. it's abstraction 101. if you could sell it by the pound it'd be worth about...what does canvas and wood cost?
Harry Smith (referred to in the one painting)....Artist, filmmaker, created Anthology of American Folk Music... Nice to see Chris Martin acknowledge his influences.
quirky and masterful....influences abound....primitive has influenced everyone from Picasso on....I really like this. If mice eat 'em they must be good!
@eenkjet seems eenkjet only watches these videos so he can say something negative about every artist they feature. never fails.eenkjet is the one person out of 7 billion on earth who truly knows what art should be.we should feel lucky to be a part of his condescension.
@sunlogosis show me something good and i will respond in a completely different way. like i'm driving 5.5 hours in the next couple months just to see the mark bradford exhibit in dallas that coming up. and i do know a lot about art and the making of it. so maybe it's kind of bringing a PBJ sandwich to a 4 star chef kind of thing?
@eenkjet Race aside, artists have always sought inspiration where they find it, and thought you might know for yourself, unless you're a mind-reader, you have no idea of what being true to ones self means for others.
I've liked other of Chris Martin's work. This however is not very strong. I'll be looking for his take on Kokopelli at Big Lots in the Fall seasonal aisle.
It is great to see Chris having a show of this magnitude...Congrats to Chris! I'll have go to DC and see this while his work is close...thanks for putting this on you tube. - Ron
