  • two great singers, a very beatifull music, but the sound is poor.!

  • Audio quality is crap. Is there a clearer version extant?

  • The duet is great and it's great to see the younger Domingo, for a change. The quality is poor, sadly - and I'd wish there were some other conductor there instead of this gum-chewing Jude.

  • Nice conducting by John C. Reilly!

  • this is my favorite duet !!!

  • Is it true that the baritone part in this duet is easier when compared to the tenor's part? I heard a music broadcaster say this and wondered if any singers or musicians would care to comment.

  • @verdiwag

For the average man certainly as it is a lower part but does not travel that far down. A tenor could (and has)sing the tenor part but would not be able to do soun amplified.

  • Wos'n deaz fyure'n shice?

  • è un duetto eseguito bene ...ma non esageriamo...saluti

  • I have always loved this duet, it always brings tears to my eyes. This performance by a great conductor and orchestra and two of my favourite singers of all time is sublime. Bjorling and Merrill are my favourites singing the Pearl Fishers duet, but Domingo and Milnes come damned close, they are perfect together and not only are both superb singers but they are outstanding actors too.

  • This is the ultimate in duet singing. There is only one more comparable one to this :

In the duet of La Somambulla with Paveroti and Sutherland ." Prendi L'anel ti dono

Both are heavenly expresion of the soul. Netanel

  • Absolutely stunning... its so interesting that Sherril Milnes sings this so beautifully and in tune. When he doesn't artificially darken his sound its absolutely stunning. Pity he spent most of his career singing Verdi, because his voice is actually very delicate sounding here.

  • Is it just me, or is Sherrill Milnes kinda dragging the tempo, because he wants to sing more...?

  • @delam2 No, that's the way it is supposed to be sung.

  • bliss...... is all i have to say

  • Très belle interprêtation.

  • Milnes is built like a lumberjack!

  • Geez, are they both sexy or what? And on top of their vocal games as well! What more do listeners want?

  • These two are fantastic with each other!

  • . The most exquisit ,duet in all opera repetoire

Sung by by a marvelous tenor and a a bass..

    A sublime expression by Bizet

    Netanel

  • what marvelous voices. hard to believe i grew up on a farm near Sherrill Milnes' farm in Downers Grove and the only time i heard him sing in person was behind a team of horses!

  • This is the best duet of the "Pearl Fisher" I have ever heard. These two voices are

perfect together, also in other operas. Absolutely wonderful!!!!

  • I don´t think Jussi Bjorling and Rober Merills version will be surpassed in my lifetime (or anybody elses lifetime for that matter!)

But this is a very good version. Maybe 70 % as good as Bjorling Merill.

  • Their duet from Verdi's Don Carlo, recorded in the early 70s, tops even this. I know its hard to believe. But just listen.

  • @muatlas I agree. They recorded the Don Carlo duet well before Milnes' vocal crisis during the early 1980s. It's a lovely version, with two young, hugely talented artists in their respective primes, or close to them:) --

  • Outstanding the voices...what a great Aria !

  • my favourite opera and two had did such a wonderful duet!!!

  • thanks so much for posting!

  • Thank you for posting this - wonderful!

  • Stunning.............What a wonderful ability humans have to exhume so much emotion form the soul....heaven sent wonders.

  • Domingo is absolutely spot-on perfect here.

  • fantastic 10**********

  • For cryozo - yes they did. There is almost of full page of recit missing where Zurga sings "oublions le passé...aux portes de Candi' most likely to get to the duet more quickly.

  • Did Sherill just jump over a part?

  • Wow, three men I positively adore together, what a treat :-)

  • Gack! I looked up and saw pervy James Levine. My eyes, my eyes are burning!

(but, leaving him aside, of course both great singers and an incredibly beautiful duet)

  • @AmoreHL xD

  • Ha, funny, my comment got one negative vote. Apparently other pervs object to that characterization. Guess Cincinnati has been well-hushed up.

  • Awesome

  • Magnificent!!!

  • Wow! This just gorgeous.

  • Domingo really suprised me here. His first B-flat was very smooth and beautiful.

  • great 10*

  • Precioso y la interpretación brillante como todas las de Milnes y Domingo. Bravo

  • Sin duda,la verdad es que parece que no hay papel que no lo hagan de una manera impresionante

  • BRAVI!

  • me emocione hasta las lagrimas

  • MAJIC !!!

  • beautiful!!!

  • I was privileged to see and meet Sherrill Milnes two month ago when he spent a weekend with the Asheville (NC, USA) Lyric Opera. There was a reception in his honor, then he came to the opera company's Gala later that evening. The next day he gave a master class to 6 young singers and we got to witness that event. We got autographs, pictures with him, and I got to chat with him both days. Great! And isn't this a great duet by two great stars - one now retired but the other still going strong!

  • I'm so jealous that you got to meet Sherrill Milnes!! He's been my opera idol for 25 years!! And yes, this was a wonderful aria -- Miles and Domingo. I remember watching this program on PBS back in the 80's. I love these two wonderful singers! Miles sang Iago to Domingo's Otello, with Renata Scotto singing Desdemona, many years ago. They got me hooked on opera.

  • I saw him singing Otello in 1972 in Boston with the Met. He is the perfect Iago: sardonic, forceful and stunning.

  • Oh, I'm so jealous you got to see him live!! I never got that chance! But I did watch him on PBS every chance I got, and I was very happy to see him perform on PBS's recent airing of the tribute to Pavarotti. Milnes has aged gracefully, and his voice is still powerful. He sang in an aria from Boheme. What a delight to see him again, even if only on TV! But yes, his Iago is the best. I remember watching him as he sang "Credo in un Dio Crudel". Gave me boosebumps!

  • @Peppi94 Milnes is THE best Iago! He oozes evil, very imposing to say the least.

  • @pdfan33036 Yes, indeed!! Evil AND sexiness!! :)

  • @pdfan33036 I met Milnes at the Met and he is imposing in person as well. Very nice man:-)

  • Sheer bliss!! Thank you so much!

But it's 'Pearl FISHERS' - these guys were diving to the bottom after OYSTERS, in which they hoped to find PEARLS, which could be a hazardous occupation

  • would be intersting to speculate.. do u think in the Milnes prime he could've been able to join the tenor on the Bflat?

  • Definitely. Check out watch?v=dl0TQ6zAjAo and you'll hear him hit Bb and it will seem like hes not even singing that high.

  • IShicovianista says: I've heard him do it in Otello. I have a video tape to prove it.

  • Milnes sings a Bb in the Lucia Di Lammermoor Decca recording with Sutherland and Pavarotti.

  • Incredible rendition of one of the most beautiful Tenor-Baritone-Duets in opera!!! Plácido is and will be forever... THE GREATEST!!!!

  • heilt einastandandi. kærar heilsanir from Faroe islands.PSDD

    Perfect.

  • My mom has had this exact recording with Domingo and Milnes on an old LP plastic record for the last 30 years around about, and this is the first time she has actually seen the video. She was blown away with tears in her eyes when I showed it to her. It was one of her favourites and I grew up with this stuff. Also, her recording stopped at 5:30 - so she finally got to hear (and see) the rest of it. Thank God for youtube and the internet - long may it live in freedom.

  • Viva Bizet!

  • So gorgeous. My favorite.

  • Beautiful. Thank you.

  • anyonw know who is the conductor of the orchestra in this video?

  • James Levine

  • PERFECTION

  • Thank you for the best duet of pearl fishers I have heard ever!

  • Thanks, Wansob. The best videos. Milnes and Domigo. ¿What else? Brilliant. I started loving opera thanks to this singers, and that fantastic disc of duets they made years ago..

    xx

  • precioso

  • Wow - Levine is brilliant with the baton, but his hair! Funny how it hasn't changed in over 20 years!

  • Too bad they are not doing that still. I'd be available for either one.

  • hahaha!

    it's true

  • OMG Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! What a fantastic pair these guys are! They rival jussi an robert with this duet!!! I defy anyone to say different!!! You are Brill WANSOB!

  • Thank you :-))

  • @kamikazekate I'll take up that challenge! Combine the two versions and give us Placido & Robert...that would be PERFECTION!!!!

  • @kamikazekate

I think that Jussi Bjorling & Robert Merrill made this duet a bit, very little, but still slightly better :-)
