What you say about him dipping his head and shortening the distance to the ball... If he matches this with moving his hips backwards slightly, the distance is maintained and he has a flatter swing. This compression into the ground gives extra power doesn't it? I'm no expert, but I've noticed this about powerful hitters. If he stopped dipping his head do you think he would lose power? Thanks.
Superb analysis Barry, many thanks. I especially like the explanation of the left hip 'delaying' the hit of the hands and arms. This is because the hands and arms are kept passive and all the force is generated in the body's centre....something I'm only just getting the hang of after 10 years!
That was really very good instruction. Getting me in the mood to improve my swing. Have you any vids about trying to connect with what happens when the hands and shoulders turn and things kind of get lost. Apreciate it.
Great analysis. Very simple and easy to understand. I have trouble releasing my hands a little early like sergio garcia and then not using my hips enough to lead my hands. Could you recommend any drills or something to help with this? Thanks
hi,i used to have the same problem then a realized hogam never released the club with his hands instead,it is better to keep the right elbow close to your body and hold the club off,you strike it better i find.
Excellent analysis...I'm not a golfer but love to watch the sport...even before T-Dub but I had no idea how intricate the game is...and as I get older it's more appealing.
hello barry. i have a tendency to drop the club a little from the top of my back swing. i am trying to work on hitting into my left side from the top of my backswing with my hips like all the good players do. have you and drills i can practice to help me with this?

Hey I just started golfing but if I post a video on some of my swings, you think you can like help me with my stances and tell me what I'm doing wrong. I want to get more distance when I hit, the most I've hit was like 150 yards, mind you I am REALLY bad at golf haha. But its a great sport and I love it :)
The biggest difference in the best tour pro's and everyone else is their long games. I went to a seminiar where Dave Howel pointed out this is why Tiger is so far ahead.
I might miss 2 fairways per round, but my hdcp is +2 (meaning on my best day I will score -2) not +9 or whatever Tiger's is. I simply can't chip and putt as well as he can. With so much information on the full swing and equipment technology, the only factor today is putting the ball in the hole.
I agree with you on that point Tiger is the master at getting out of trouble on the golf course.
When he was hitting the ball every where he kept getting pars from crazy positions and then he would put a few drives and iron shots together and make a few bidries and finish a bad round 3 under.
Must be sole destroying stuff if you are playing with Tiger.
If you compare this to the swing portrait commercial from Nike you will see even more differences. Especially when it comes to his head location. It is almost as if he never moves it. Kinda like the new stack and tilt phenomena that is taking golf by storm.
I hear what you are saying. I don't buy into all of the hype with the stack and tilt because of its limited control over trajectory but it works fairly well here in Oklahoma where it is very common to play rounds with 30 to 40 miles per hour sustained winds. I find if you stay back a little more than they suggest your ball flight comes out fine.
READ THIS!! nob head! to say tigers success is because he handles pressure is pure stupidty, If he couldn't hit the ball has well has he does pressure management wouldnt even matter, while I do believe he handles pressure well but what good is it being able to cope with pressure if you hit crap shots in to the ruff and out of bounds. you must be the coolest person taking a drop on par 3 on your 9th shot. lol!
everybody thinks that because tiger woods is number one golfer his swing is perfect, when its not! thousands of video discribes his swing and invent stupids lines like "at that moment his arm is perfectly parallel to his eyebros" and stupid things like that...tigers the best because he handles pressure like no one does and beacause his the best putt player ever!!! and thats it!! notice thats his not even so accurate with his drive! so thats what i think!
everybody thinks that because tiger woods is number one golfer his swing is perfect, when its not! thousands of video discribes his swing and invent stupids lines like "at that moment his arm is perfectly parallel to his eyebros" and stupid things like that...tigers the best because he handles pressure like no one does and beacause his the best putt player ever!!! and thats it!! notice thats his not even so accurate with his drive! so thats what i think!
never noticed that head dip before but it is quite pronounced. Then he snaps his left leg at impact which produces the all-time fastest clubhead speed in golf.
The major change is his shift of weight. He does not get on his right side as much. He is mainly(about 80%) on his left side throughout the swing. He then bumps his hips and rotates around his hips. I have no idea how this guy is the #1 teacher in the world and did not even mention who else swings like this, Hogan. Well he might have, but I couldnt listen after he was going on and on about head dropping as a bad thing.
Looking at his old swing from 2001 and his new swing today, there is argument that his new swing is close to the stack and tilt but a modified stack and tilt. There is not much lateral movement from his lower body compared to 2001. Plus, he puts a little weight on his left side and his arms are in a lower position. This awesome swing.
yeah, leave it to a couple o guys from near golf's "motherland" to berate and belittle the swing of one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, players to ever pick up a golf club. first, we have barry power "irelands No 1 golf instructor" now, I'm not an expert, the analysis is excellent, but you're analyzing a "bad" (if you can call it that) present day swing, against a "good" swing from 2001...
...then we have "knowyourteam" the apparent golf god of the united kingdom talkin about having more control of his swing than tiger woods, calling it "decent action"..come on man, what's ur handicap? 20? 25?...loser...how about you post a video of your swing so we can analyze it...i'm a 9.4 handicap, you post your swing, i'll post mine.
i can't believe people get so wound up. i was clearly being sarcastic. though i understand people don't sarcasim over the pond. my handicap is 1, though that isnt relevant. tiger is clearly the greatest golfer and possibly sportsperson who ever lived. his dominance may never be repeated ever again. now everyone take a chill pill and enjoy the clip.
his swings is not unlike mine, but i dont have quite so much head movement on the way down and i prolly have a bit more of a controlled take away. still, decent action.
Ya, go win the masters if his swing is so "decent". You don't have as much head movement and your "prolly" more controlled. You've got the better swing. How many PGA tour titles do you have? Just wondering. More than Tiger, so 80?,100?, 500?
His head drop is due to his hip bump while maintaining his spine angle. If it doesnt drop it will cause the club to slide across the ball resulting in a slice.
i think (im not sure) that the swing on the right is a bad swing of tigers from the 18th of the 2007 Us open. Its unfair to judge his swing on this evidence as in my opinion his new swing is far superior. Tiger's new swing is more one plane like hogans and therefore reduces the risk of getting blocked and hooking or blocking it, the most hated shots of both these champions. This swing on the right is just a bad example :)
I think it's funny nobody comments on how much Tiger pushes off from his right foot. They always say, "it's a natural reaction of how he gets to his left side". A large part of his power is that he actually uses the take off of his right foot like a sprinter taking off out of the blocks to create his powerful swing.
Tiger is blatently on steriod or some kind of supliment. Nobody can achieve the size that he has in the last yeasr without some kind of help. Bring on the doping tests!
Have you SEEN Tiger in person? He may be ripped, but by no means is he gigantic...he just has the body of someone who works out very hard. If anything, TV does a lot to make someone look larger than they really are - I was surprised by how much smaller he was in person...
i might be wrong... however tigers right foot comes up not as a result of his swing or power etc.. but because he collapses his knee towards his left side raising the heel up, this in turn pulls his head down. then he has to correct by pushing himself up on his toes. this is a bad swing only his co-ordinaiton gets him to the ball. watch videos by clemshaw on youtube try the hogan power move one you will see that the right heel should be down through impact not up..
Great to watch, just one point, I think Tiger dips his head on the downswing as this creates a natural unhindered unwinding of the body and thus avoids any interruption prior to the releasing of the hands or approaching the hitting area. Sean O'Hare is the same. Try it, set yourself at the top of the back swing and just slowly squat down, you will see your entire upper body unwinds and takes advantage of the resistance caused. Many pro's think this is a bad thing, I don't agree
