I think the main reason the smallies come up to you in the river is because you are a current breaker and they wanna be in front of you because your resting spot for them, am I right, or are they just that way?
@GameFishermen I have seen them come off good structure at a distance of 25 feet, and swim hard to confront us, so i don't feel that's it. Sometimes they feed on the gobies and crayfish we disturb, so that explains some of it, The behavior seems to be instinctive though, as little 3 inch bass exhibit it as well. They are a very aggressive fish, with no fear of divers at all. Imagine a little bass like that getting up in our faces, it's crazy.
Awesome footage! These are probably my fave fish to catch, I love smallies. Is this spot accessible by shore or do you need boat? I will be moving to Niagara on the lake next year, this looks very promising :D
Thanks, this was filmed out away from the shoreline, but decent bass fishing can be had from shore. Niagara on the Lake is a nice town. You will enjoy it there.- Jim

@GameFishermen It's because fish are actually social animals. It's when they get a hook jabbed through their face, that they take flight.
