My first car was a '78 Accord hatchback. Bitchin' little car, with the rear seat folded down I could crash out in the back after a night of partying. Not to be confused with a sports car, or a car that can go fast, this car had some getup. I had the manual though. I'd love to get one of these now and put a small block V8 in it. If it's fit, probably not. To this day I have a fondness for Honda and hatchbacks, One day this shitty style will come back around...
From day one, I had my 1980 Accord rust proofed by Ziebart. I had no issue for the 10 years I drove it. I then gave it to a buddy of mine and he drove it for another 6 years, totally something over 280,000 miles. Awesome car.
My first new car, a 1980 Honda Accord. Awesome car. I sold it 10 years later with 187,000 miles to a friend of mine. He drove it for about 2 years more, adding another 40,000 miles or so. Then a much larger car broad sided it while it was parked.
I love this car. My friend just bought one for $370 at a dealership, except it was a 1982 model and came in black. The only problem is that is has 198,000 miles and will probably die soon. But overall the car is in great condition, it even rides nice!
@mypassmark1 I was constipated once- really bad! Doc gave me an industrial strength laxitive.... soon.. out came a 1981 Accord!. Now I know their origin...... Also explains why most of them were only in various shades of brown......
@lcvd1 I'm the same way with a lot of these '80s car ads, and even some '90s ones now. What's even stranger is cars I remember as being brand new nowadays being rusty and have peeling paint.
@lcvd1 you must be young those older cars look better then that new trash they build now your brains are used you doing drugs lol make sense it's probably the old commecial that make you think that
Remember the 3 door 85 Accord? It always reminded me of Inspector Gadgets car in the cartoon series of the 80's. I'mnot sure how old you are or if ya even seen that cartoon series, but the Gadget Mobile resembled that Accord a lot.
Haha, the days when all Japanese imports were tiny tin cans. I'd probably take one of those over a current Accord any day. Bet this '81 is a hell of a lot less problematic. They had no features to break! LOL
You must be lucky then. The one person I know with an accord ('05 I think) has problems with hers. It makes a farting noise inside the car, lmao. She's so embarrassed and Honda won't fix it.
Actually, I forgot about a former friend of mine. He had an '05 Accord as well. His would stutter when he'd step on the gas, like it was going to stall. He was so pissed to have spent so much on an Accord and it still have issues like anything cheaper.
That's the perception anyway. Don't know if it's still the case, but Accords had terrible automatic transmissions for a couple decades. 100k and then they die. Might as well buy a friggin' cheapo Taurus if you're gonna deal with that kind of crap.
They are huge now...part of the early Accord appeal was that it was a small car with luxury features. Now it is ajust another full-size car and not a subcompact like the 81. Yeah...the new ones are nice enough cars....but the "tiny" fit is almost the same size outside as this 81 Accord. The 81 had nice interior materials and had nice lines too.
@jakesaintsrow123 My brothers car being a 1986 Honda Civic had an MPg of 28, my old mans car being a 2009 Chevy Malibu LTZ has an MPG of 37.. the "Cruze" sits at 61... Yes MPG is much better right now then it used to be.
@sacr3 i agree with you to an extent. a 1990 Mazda Miata gets around 35mpg, a 2005 Mazda Miata gets around 24mpg. so in certain cars, this is true, mainly in only the eco friendly cars that are built to get the better gas mileage. but basically any other car thats considered "sport", the MPG's have dropped. but not all of them.
@sacr3 longer lasting my ass lol. ever hear of the saying "they dont make them like they used to".. there's alot of truth to that for certain makes and models
@eroc2689 Its because old folk don't want to lose their old vehicles. Just like in 40 years i'll be sitting there saying the older ones are better. Back in those days, you buy a shitty brand, you get a shitty car. Same with today, you buy a civic, you get a car that'll break down faster than others. But Efficiency, Safety, Power, its all better than the older vehicles.
what are you talking about. the civic most certainly does not break down more than others. it is the bench mark the measure of reliabilty that all other small cars are measured by. the civic is one of the top 10 most reliable cars of the last 20 years. have you seen how hard young people beat there civics and they last a long time fact not opinion.. one thing about old cars they were built with higher quality materials but were not as efficient or reliable

The 1985 Accord Hatchback with the long-stroke 1800 cc 12-valve engine was the most amazing cars I've ever driven !
Engine characteristics was I-D-E-A-L , and the progressive servo steering nothing short of Perfect (!) - yes Sir! I said PERFECT.
Add to the engine and the steering, a distinct, short-stroke 5-speed gearbox, and you end up with a nimble, quick extremely fun drivers car !!
Nothing on four wheels even come close re. enjoyment !
The FUN factor beat all cars I've ever driven !!!
