What we do for Christ will last. We lay up treasures in Heaven. You are right without eternity life has no meaning. The book of Ecclesiastes points this out well. All is vanity apart from God. You can't take it with you, true. I think some people can easily fall into wanting to leave a legacy or financial reward for their children or grandchildren. When the legacy they should leave behind is the knowledge that Jesus is our Savior and Lord. Our goal in life should be to honor His Holy Name. The wisdom God gives us far exceeds any classroom book!
