Why are they saying he's only having emotions now? He's always had them each season- trauma with his mother's death and learning of his brother then killing him. Then whatever experiment he had with Lila and throughout all the seasons he has grown to "love" may be not in the ordinary sense nonetheless still love Rita and the kids in his own way. You can't deny that. So it isn't only after Rita's death does he feel guilt, or hurt or emotion. He's felt more and more each season.
