As an Iowa fan I really hope Joe Pa has a few years of coaching left in him. This rivalry has become pretty big over the pas decade and Kirk Ferentz and Joe Paterno are class acts! I cant wait to go back to happy valley this year for another game between these two teams! Of course I will be rooting for the Hawks but I really look forward to a close hard fought game!

This really wasn't much of an upset at all. Even as a Penn State fan, I knew Penn State was pretty overrated last year as #5 going into this game. Both teams were pretty evenly matched, but Penn State just played an awful game.

I'm an Iowa native/fan all the way!! But Kirk Ferentz is probably the most overrated coach in college football. Until recently, he's been very AVERAGE. In fact, quite below average for the first several years as head coach. And sadly, Iowa has one of the WORST o-coordinators in the game! They could really rock college football if Ken 'O Keefe weren't so terrible!!!!
@Finne116 Iowa was pitiful their first two years but had bare cupboards to work with. In 2001 we saw the beginning of the new Iowa run. In 2002 and 2004, Iowa was Big Ten co-champions, going 8-0 in conference in 2002, ranked as high as #3 at one point. Iowa finished #8 in the nation in 2002, 2003, and 2004. However, I understand sentiments that he underachieved in 2005 and especially in 2006 and 2007, but 2008 was the beginning of Iowa's resurgance.
@MVillani1985 They have YOUNG talent too...they're stacked at QB (AJ Derby from IC City High, Ricky Stanzi, James Vandenberg, John Weinke). SHOULD be awesome on their running game this year, between Brandon Wegher, Jewell Hampton, and Adam Robinson. Wide outs: Keenen Davis is a HUGE threat...watch out for him!! Marvin McNutt and Derrell J-K of course. And then the WHOLE defensive line.
Theoretically, Iowa should be AMAZING!! But names and stats on paper don't tell the story.
If the Hawks don't let success go to their heads and stay healthy, we can be very good. I think the offensive line will start out average and be really good by the time October comes. Riley Reiff could be Iowa's next stud offensive lineman. Our linebackers will be just fine. Tarpanian was a stud on Special Teams last year.
@Finne116 I hate to sound too annoyingly optimistic but I think Iowa's learned for their past mistakes. The mistakes of 2005 caused Iowa heartbreak up really through 2008. But the Hawkeyes should be almost invincible this year.
The beginning of the new Iowa run began in the last four games of the 2000 season. True Freshman Bob Sanders made his first start against Wisconsin. We almost beat a Badgers team that finished the year in the Top 25. Then we went on the road and beat Penn State. After the Big win at Penn State, we came home and beat a really good Northwestern team. Had Northwestern beaten us, they would've went to the Rose Bowl. We finished the season by losing to Minnesota.
Penn State is always difficult . Nice footage , as I live far away from the US - Chile . But lived there for 16 years , and huge Hawkeye fan . I remember when Ferentz first arrived there in the late 90 s , the team slowly but surely began to take on a really potent level of playing . I left Iowa in 1999 , and still remember the good ole days of Hayden Fry .....
@cavaleer Penn State was hardly average last year, infact I'd call the 2009 Lions an elite team, an average team is one that goes 6-6 to 8-4. The 2009 Lions actually blasted a bunch of average teams (Minneosta, Michigan State, Northwestern, Temple) and dominated a good LSU everywhere but the scoreboard. So consider the win over PSU in 2009 a very quality win, it's not like they were the 2006 or 2007 Lions. Now 2010, Penn State's going to be below average, mark it down, I say Iowa wins 35-10.
@MVillani1985 If you say so but they looked incredibly average to me, esp. on offense. Their QB was average, probably should've been a RB or DB. That one #5 was deeply average. On defense I guess they were solid in the fundamental, typical of a junior or senior JoePa squad but they looked slow as molasses. Iowa was much sharper to me. Shame Iowa's WRs couldn't catch those TDs against OSU. They had that game won.
@cavaleer I thought PSU's offense looked good outside of the O-Line, which actually was very ordinary, while the defense was unreal. PSU's Defense looked good and very speedy until Iowa took the lead then looked like they had the wind sucked out of them. That's why I consider PSU as a huge win for Iowa, even bigger than GT. Completely agree about OSU, though, Iowa had a few missed TD passes and worse yet, missed chip shot Daniel Murray field goals. Iowa likely will beat OSU this year at home.
It didn't matter who Penn State had at quarterback last year, the way Iowa's Defensive line dominated their O Line can make any quarterback look average.

I think if Penn State plays above their potential Iowa wins 24-13 like you said, but usually Iowa wins 35-10.
Only one loss in a decade. 2 upsets in a row. I'd say we have established domination over Penn State. Even though we finished ranked higher this year, Penn State was 11-1 and we were 10-2 not counting our matchup. They had it at home and we were unranked. Then the matter in which we won. After that shock bomb on their first play, they had absolutely nothing. Nothing. We dominated. Score didn't show it but it was clear during the second quarter that Penn State wouldn't see another point.
@abgmpsw0708 I hope so but it isn't a given. We got gutted a bit on the offensive line and remember that the Hawkeyes are a team that squeaked out a lot of their wins last year. Sure we won a BCS game and return a lot but we aren't returning a dominant BCS team. Ohio State returns a crapload as do a few other teams. Expect nothing to be a given. We will have to work just as hard.
Iowa isn't the bully of the Big Ten for no reason. As you see here in this video, they knock the shit out of you! Iowa recruits players to play as a part of a unit. Iowa stays in games against elite teams like Florida, LSU, and Texas because they play better as a team than those schools do. They swarm to the ball and HIT you and then on offense they go straight at you. They don't care how elite you are, if you don't wanna play physical football, you don't belong on a field with Iowa.

@nalemanni I thought Tech challenged Iowa less than PSU did to be honest. PSU defensively shut down Iowa for all but the 4th quarter, while the Hawks never trailed against Tech. Not that I think GT is a bad team, they were a good team, just a tad overrated at #9, losing to a Miami team that Wisconsin handled with no problem (a Wisconsin that Iowa beat 20-10). I know, I know, transitive property is bunk, but I think Iowa would have bludgeoned Miami 31-3 or so for some reason.

@HereComeTheHawkeyes Very true, especially when you look at how bad the bottom of the ACC is. Little known fact, the CAA, an FCS conference, went 2-1 vs the ACC. I think you are right though that many teams could have beaten Georgia Tech in the Big Ten, since the B10 was a pretty solid conference in 2009, even the bowl losses were close (NW outplayed Auburn and should've won, Minnesota was a point away, and even Michigan State, a mega-underdog, led heading into the 4th against Texas Tech).

Florida would have led early, then Iowa would have adjusted, then the slumbering offense would have woke up and beaten Florida something like 34-24. We saw that with Stanzi there's no hole Iowa can't get out of. Iowa trailed 21-7 at halftime against Indiana, then still trailed 24-14 after three, but ended up going from losing big to actually blowing out Indiana 42-24.

No matter the ranking or record we are always an underdog against PSU and we end up beating them. However Im leary about this year's game for some reason. Only two games scare me and thats OSU and Penn State, whcih are both at home. Hope I'm wrong. Go Hawks!

You have One or two teams that are great, and two or three that can be good. Wait...your gonna say, but what about Penn State, and Wisconsin. Yeah those are the can be good teams. The Big Ten has struggled recently, no question about it. But we finally had a good bowl season last year. The Big Ten is loaded this year. Most of last year's starting quarterbacks are back. Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, and Wisconsin should have really good defenses.

I'm an Iowa native/fan all the way!! But Kirk Ferentz is probably the most overrated coach in college football. Until recently, he's been very AVERAGE. In fact, quite below average for the first several years as head coach. And sadly, Iowa has one of the WORST o-coordinators in the game! They could really rock college football if Ken 'O Keefe weren't so terrible!!!!

@Finne116 Iowa was pitiful their first two years but had bare cupboards to work with. In 2001 we saw the beginning of the new Iowa run. In 2002 and 2004, Iowa was Big Ten co-champions, going 8-0 in conference in 2002, ranked as high as #3 at one point. Iowa finished #8 in the nation in 2002, 2003, and 2004. However, I understand sentiments that he underachieved in 2005 and especially in 2006 and 2007, but 2008 was the beginning of Iowa's resurgance.

@MVillani1985 They have YOUNG talent too...they're stacked at QB (AJ Derby from IC City High, Ricky Stanzi, James Vandenberg, John Weinke). SHOULD be awesome on their running game this year, between Brandon Wegher, Jewell Hampton, and Adam Robinson. Wide outs: Keenen Davis is a HUGE threat...watch out for him!! Marvin McNutt and Derrell J-K of course. And then the WHOLE defensive line.
Theoretically, Iowa should be AMAZING!! But names and stats on paper don't tell the story.

If the Hawks don't let success go to their heads and stay healthy, we can be very good. I think the offensive line will start out average and be really good by the time October comes. Riley Reiff could be Iowa's next stud offensive lineman. Our linebackers will be just fine. Tarpanian was a stud on Special Teams last year.

@Finne116 I hate to sound too annoyingly optimistic but I think Iowa's learned for their past mistakes. The mistakes of 2005 caused Iowa heartbreak up really through 2008. But the Hawkeyes should be almost invincible this year.

The beginning of the new Iowa run began in the last four games of the 2000 season. True Freshman Bob Sanders made his first start against Wisconsin. We almost beat a Badgers team that finished the year in the Top 25. Then we went on the road and beat Penn State. After the Big win at Penn State, we came home and beat a really good Northwestern team. Had Northwestern beaten us, they would've went to the Rose Bowl. We finished the season by losing to Minnesota.

Penn State is always difficult . Nice footage , as I live far away from the US - Chile . But lived there for 16 years , and huge Hawkeye fan . I remember when Ferentz first arrived there in the late 90 s , the team slowly but surely began to take on a really potent level of playing . @cavaleer Penn State was hardly average last year, infact I'd call the 2009 Lions an elite team, an average team is one that goes 6-6 to 8-4. The 2009 Lions actually blasted a bunch of average teams (Minneosta, Michigan State, Northwestern, Temple) and dominated a good LSU everywhere but the scoreboard. So consider the win over PSU in 2009 a very quality win, it's not like they were the 2006 or 2007 Lions. Now 2010, Penn State's going to be below average, mark it down, I say Iowa wins 35-10.

@MVillani1985 If you say so but they looked incredibly average to me, esp. on offense. Their QB was average, probably should've been a RB or DB. That one #5 was deeply average. On defense I guess they were solid in the fundamental, typical of a junior or senior JoePa squad but they looked slow as molasses. Iowa was much sharper to me. Shame Iowa's WRs couldn't catch those TDs against OSU. They had that game won.

@cavaleer I thought PSU's offense looked good outside of the O-Line, which actually was very ordinary, while the defense was unreal. PSU's Defense looked good and very speedy until Iowa took the lead then looked like they had the wind sucked out of them. That's why I consider PSU as a huge win for Iowa, even bigger than GT. Completely agree about OSU, though, Iowa had a few missed TD passes and worse yet, missed chip shot Daniel Murray field goals. Iowa likely will beat OSU this year at home.

This year, Penn State has young linebackers and has to pick between a quarterback that's like Anthony Morelli part two (Matt McGloin), a quarterback that can't throw the ball but can run yet fumbles half the time when he runs (Kevin Newsome), and freshman Robert Bolden. I think if Penn State plays above their potential Iowa wins 24-13 like you said, but usually Iowa wins 35-10.

Only one loss in a decade. 2 upsets in a row. I'd say we have established domination over Penn State. Even though we finished ranked higher this year, Penn State was 11-1 and we were 10-2 not counting our matchup. They had it at home and we were unranked. Then the matter in which we won. After that shock bomb on their first play, they had absolutely nothing. Nothing. We dominated. Score didn't show it but it was clear during the second quarter that Penn State wouldn't see another point.

@abgmpsw0708 I hope so but it isn't a given. We got gutted a bit on the offensive line and remember that the Hawkeyes are a team that squeaked out a lot of their wins last year. Sure we won a BCS game and return a lot but we aren't returning a dominant BCS team. Ohio State returns a crapload as do a few other teams. Expect nothing to be a given. We will have to work just as hard.

Iowa isn't the bully of the Big Ten for no reason. As you see here in this video, they knock the shit out of you! Iowa recruits players to play as a part of a unit. Iowa stays in games against elite teams like Florida, LSU, and Texas because they play better as a team than those schools do. They swarm to the ball and HIT you and then on offense they go straight at you. They don't care how elite you are, if you don't wanna play physical football, you don't belong on a field with Iowa.

Stanford is like Michigan or Michigan State...they're good but not THAT good, and that was proven. My point: Pac-10 is overrated. When Stanzi and Ken O' Keefe aren't total idiots, Iowa can compete with ANYONE!! Yes, Iowa's defense carries them..but so what. They win games. The worst I've seen Iowa in the last 2 years was due to bad play calling, special teams, and terrible offensive linemen...didn't have a thing to do with Stanzi, WR, RB, or the defensive line. They are a VERY solid team!

@nalemanni I thought Tech challenged Iowa less than PSU did to be honest. PSU defensively shut down Iowa for all but the 4th quarter, while the Hawks never trailed against Tech. Not that I think GT is a bad team, they were a good team, just a tad overrated at #9, losing to a Miami team that Wisconsin handled with no problem (a Wisconsin that Iowa beat 20-10). I know, I know, transitive property is bunk, but I think Iowa would have bludgeoned Miami 31-3 or so for some reason.

@HereComeTheHawkeyes Very true, especially when you look at how bad the bottom of the ACC is. Little known fact, the CAA, an FCS conference, went 2-1 vs the ACC. I think you are right though that many teams could have beaten Georgia Tech in the Big Ten, since the B10 was a pretty solid conference in 2009, even the bowl losses were close (NW outplayed Auburn and should've won, Minnesota was a point away, and even Michigan State, a mega-underdog, led heading into the 4th against Texas Tech).

We just stay on the field and wear the other team out, I really would've loved to have gone against FL to see what we could've done against them.

Florida would have led early, then Iowa would have adjusted, then the slumbering offense would have woke up and beaten Florida something like 34-24. We saw that with Stanzi there's no hole Iowa can't get out of. Iowa trailed 21-7 at halftime against Indiana, then still trailed 24-14 after three, but ended up going from losing big to actually blowing out Indiana 42-24.

Well never know who is better, because Georgia Tech and LSU didn't play eachother this year. and they finished close to eachother in the polls, with Tech finishing higher. Tech beat an SEC team. Iowa and Georgia Tech had tougher schedules than Penn State.

Here's the thing, Penn State is rebuilding in 2010, and pretty bad too, that's no excuse, it's a fact, and you'll be delighted to hear this but I think Iowa beats Penn State something like 35-10. Iowa's more loaded than a baked potato. I expect the Nittany Lions to go 4-8 (1-7) this year before rebounding next year, even though I'm a PSU fan, I'm a realistic one.

Tech was hardly the easiest bowl and the only reason why Iowa dominated like they did cuz they did what most teams that faced tech couldnt: stop the run. tech was the number 1 rushing attack in the country. Teams knew they were gonna run all day but couldnt stop them. Hell, penn state shoulda lost to LSU cause obviously they are the better team. If the conditions werent so shitty that day, LSU runs over PSU easy with its better athletes.

For the record the # 1 rushing offense by stats was Nevada, Ga Tech was 2nd and Navy was 3rd. Also Navy averaged about 74 passing yds per game and Ga Tech averaged like 135 yd. Obviously that doesnt mean one is better than the other, but people should know what they are talking about.
