hey man, your wood working skills are fucking amazing and i am a huge fan! both of your segmented pieces look awesome and i am keen for another video! will you be uploading any more videos in the near future???
how can you be sure that you are cutting the correct angle on your saw? i got one saw like you, but dont know how the cut the pieces so precise like you are doing.
I do a drawing to scale of the side profile of the bowl. From that drawing I can see the outside and inside diameter of each "block" or layer. I then draw the "block" or layer from the top( two circles) Then I draw the segments around the outside of the larger circle, and inside the smaller circle. Then you simply just measure the width and length of each segment. All this can be done by hand. It is much quicker with drafting software. I use autocad
im assuming youre using dry wood. do you know anything about segmenting wet wood? im assuming that the different drying times would mess it up. any advice? thanks.
All the wood i am using is kiln dried. I have not heard of segmenting wet wood. My advice is dry wood. It takes alot of time to prepare a blank, hours before you even get to the lathe. Don't take any chances.
The branding iron came from Lee Valley. Mine has the be heated with a torche or the stove. I would suggest the plug in one if your interested. Beware that surface must be absolutly flat or it wont work properly.
Scotty, I like your video effort - fun stuff. Regarding your bowl, it looks great, but I might be a little concerned about the amount of cross-grain between the base and the first segmented layer (the two ends).
Good looking bowl scotty!

Scotty, beautiful bowl. I'm curious about the burner you used for the signature. Is it electric or propane heated one?
