"Tender Mercies" is a forgettable TV-movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Yes, Duvall is a great actor, but the winner that year should have been Eric Roberts for "Star 80"; I still don't know how he didn't make the cut even if most reviewers were tapping him as a strong contender for Best Actor; I guess he played too repulsive a character. Oh, and what the heck are Stallone and Parton doing presenting Best Actor? I know they had to promote "Rhinestone" but please...

One of my favorite Oscar years. What's up with Stallone and how many acting awards he presented back then? Best Actor '77, Best Actress '82, Actor '83.  For an actor with only one really great film to his credit (Rocky) he was all over as if he gave consistently great performances. Whenever last years winner wasn't in town, Stallone seemed invited.

Up until 1984, he had done the first two Rocky films of course, but also The Lords of Flatbush, F.I.S.T., and Victory all of which he gave particularly excellent performances. Paradise Alley was pretty damn good too. He's given great performances since then as well. He's in the same vain as people like John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Charles Bronson, Gary Cooper, etc.
