  • I guess who ever is driving the Ubuntu bus crashed. , because throwing Unity up has driven Ubuntu users away .Just look at the distrowatch.I use server edition and WAS using desktop.

Maybe unity isnt bad?I just know when your advertising your OS as user friendly and get people used to using it and then one day say oh Im going to change the way the desktop completely works.HAHA Just put the handle bars on the back the bike and the peddles where the seat goes..noone will mind.

  • Xubuntu for the win

  • Comment removed

  • Usux more liek. Debian NOW!

  • I like the way the top menu bar (panel) changes with respect to whichever window is open.

  • I like all these ads!

    Hi, im a PC.

    Hi, im a Mac.

Hello World, IM A FREAKIN TUX!

  • ok listen up, a lot of people are bashing unity, but uniti is good with a reason: more space to work with!!! if you use laptop, or netbook, or tablet, you will apreciate unity!!! even if you like to have a lot of space for surfing and stuff, you will like unity

  • Great work! What music is this???

  • C'mon! Ubuntu is a really great OS, but this on my 24" 1920x1080 display? Netbook maybe, but Gnome 'ain't broke, so don't try and fix it!

  • ATENÇÃO:

FOI DESCOBERTO QUE OS CRIADORES E DEFENSORES DO UNITY SÃO NA VERDADE ESPIÕES DA MICROSOFT QUE QUEREM ACABAR COM O LINUX. POR TUDO DE MAIS SAGRADO, NÃO INSTALEM O UNITY, ELE VAI ACABAR COM SEU PC E TE MATAR DE RAIVA!

  • unity makes me want to castrate myself

  • @MachinimaMan141 realy i though 10.10 netbook was mutter

  • 10.10, wtf?

  • on my laptop I like it. But when I use dual screen... gnome please.

  • Unity has it's flaws BUT, it's better than gnome 3 for people like me (not prettier, better). Gnome 3 has you managing "workspaces" instead of "applications" so if you are not a big workspaces user then you will probably hate gnome3. (Though I could see unity workspace switching getting annoying.) But the real issue for me is screen space. For that Unity beats Gnome3 and KDE4.6 (desktop not netbook i-face). Gnome3 cuts around 1inch of screen space off the top with it's panel/titlebar bleh!

  • @zrchrn you can work on one workspace, gnome 3 not forcing you to work with multiple ws. its just option, for me very helpful...

  • @28likeyou yes but we are talking about design here. And the new design as espoused by the gnome devs seems to focus on the user making use of multiple "activities". Hence "no minimize" by default "just switch activities

" etc. But to each his/her own.

  • unity in 11.04 isnt actually that bad, and besides shuttleworth said it wasnt exactly set to its full potential yet

  • I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.

  • Add me to the list of Ubuntu Unity haters. Non-configurable, non-intuitive, non-functional. HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT!!!

FIRST thing I do when upgrading is go to the log on screen and change default desktop BACK TO GNOME CLASSIC. The day that goes away is the day I stop evangelizing Ubuntu altogether.

TAKE A HINT, CANONICAL. UNITY IS A MISTAKE!!!

  • @ZeroFossilFuel I agree unity has it's flaws but it sticks more to classic gnome than gnome 3 and is currently much easier to configure. It was the best they could do, gnome2 is dead and is too large for ubuntu to pick up on it's own. Please report your specific concerns to devs on launchpad and/or the mailing lists. That way we can all have a better experience (if you don't want to contribute that is fine, (please consider telling people to use LTS releases for a more polished experience).

  • why dont i have tht WTF how do i get that im new to ubuntu?

  • UNITY SUCKS

  • i didn't like unity at first, but after 15 min of messing with it and tweaking it... im starting to like it. i did however set the stupid bar on the left to autohide itself so i cant see it unless i want to. but either way, dont bash it until u actually try it and mess with it, ive been using gnome since ubuntu 5.04. dont be afraid of change!

  • Not very good. Gnome :)

  • They've really improved it from what you see here. It's way more slick, way more seamless, and way more usable.

  • Unity is made for small netbooks with 16.9 screens. MShuttleworth said this is the area he targeting nwo and in the future with Unity.

  • unity

    one week left

  • i like ubuntu desktop version with compiz a lots.. but now i just bouth my new netbook and installed 2 os..

window 7 and ubuntu netbook 10.10... i prefer window 7

  • @meawnoy120

There ya go Ubuntu, see what you are doing X)

But its true, there are many more Windows users than Mac users, and Windows is more aimed at user power than Mac is in my opinion. And all this cloud computing thing is way overblown anyway, we still need a good central control system. At least keep it/make it easy to switch between the environments...

  • @Nabo00o

Mac is the easiest OS to operate for a new or old user, with some unique programs like ilife, iwork, aparture...... that can only be run on a Mac

  • First, new unity is better than this.

    2º, it's Compiz based

  • can u play games with this like windows games or games like call of duty or assasins creed or just games like that? please reply soon thank you.

  • @supra1310 ...no it's still linux.

  • @supra1310 i have windows 7 pc.. i dont wana install a free program to replace my mac laptop.. and if u cant rele play ALL games for windows.. then this program went from cool to shitty..

  • Noooooooooo!!!!! por dios no!!!! ya me veo con problemas de compatibilidad, dolores de cabeza y trasnochos por culpa de esta mierda...

  • reply to my comment if your downloading the beta on march 31

  • Coming soon: most ubuntu users to mint

  • @ZetaSimsoy Such as me. I go back and forth between Ubuntu and Mint right now because I wanted to see the differences, but once the next version comes out I'll wipe them both and make a clean install of Mint 11.

  • This is why I am switching to kde on debian.

  • @gadgetmanubuntu What's wrong with gnome

  • @gadgetmanubuntu Not KDE, but I'm thinking of giving Debian a try too.

I've used Unity before on a netbook and wasn't a fan then. Can't see me using it on a desktop.

But there's plenty of time before I decide. There's still a year of support for 10.10, so no need to rush into anything.

  • I don't like the whole idea of unity, at least on a desktop. I like efficiency and for me, a good design is one that reduce my mouse travel time and my computer usage so, Unity seem to be a really bad design.

  • Unity might be something good for a 10" display or less. I can't see myself using this GUI on my 22" screen. It looks really bad.

  • @wconstantine0 wait for unity to get more polished and watch, and in 11.10, uity 2d will be fall back, altho gnome 3 will be in repositories, unity is still a huge work in progress, and omorrow, 11.10 alpha 1 will be out

  • basically unity is like mac setup. which is really cool. apple were the first ones to realize simplicity. now everyone is slowly catching on.

  • i´m a ubuntu user... i love ubuntu... But unity... SUCKS

    Gnome 3 for 11.04 pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • @andredc16 That makes no sense at all, Gnome3 is basically the same thing as Unity, except Gnome3 intends on making even more bad decisions. How can you like Gnome2 (you said you love ubuntu, so I assume this is true) and want Gnome3, but not like Unity which is basically a partial implementation of Gnome3 "features". Looks like I'll be moving to something like Kubuntu or Mint.

  • @chinoto1 I love Ubuntu, but if anythung it´s for ubuntu i should like? That doesn´t make sense, i simply don´t like de ideia and the design... I like the standard Gnome, with the multi desktops and windows... i really don´t like to work with unity...

  • @andredc16 I didn't mean to say that you like Ubuntu no matter what, I thought you meant you love Ubuntu in it's current state (ie 10.10). From the impression I got from Gnome3 its just a different implementation of Unity's shitty ideas. In addition to Unity crap, they are removing window buttons for maximize and minimize, but amazingly retained the close button. And it seems like the shell is trying to make itself too important (obtrusive) with that activities thing.

  • @andredc16 Gnome 3 is coming with Ubuntu 11.10. Unity made me switch to Kubuntu

  • @andredc16 when you log in, at the bottom you can just choose Ubuntu classic and it will use gnome

  • @andredc16 Try Xubuntu :)

  • unity sucks penis

  • UNITY MYTISCHI ULTRAHARDCORE

    HONOR, YOUTH AND STRENGTH!

LOVE YOUR FAMILY, BROS AND SCENE!

  • If we use space wallpaper you call it "OSX CLONE"

If we made a nice style you say : "Lol OSX MUCH?"

And if the Linux OS acted like OSX in installing and more you say: Apple tech stealed!!

Ignorant ppl don't know they're all UNIX BASED OS'es they're all designed and WILL ACT the same

    And Apple doesn't own everything

Including touch screens technology, and no they weren't the first in ANYTHING they made

Apple charge premium for their good products

Ubuntu is FREE, Spare it some slack! It'll grow!

  • if it wasn't so slow it would be great! but it just sucks... for now... :(

Actually this is really good idea/project cuz it feels like mac (all the things - in front of ur face) also looks and acts like ubuntu.. this is going to be a great ui.. after some time :)

  • liENUcks fAils!!!!!!!

  • lienucks fails

  • Very beautifull!

  • Disturbing music and too little and too fast everything else.

  • I rather would use Os X over this because I like to put shortcuts on my desktop.

I would not mind the new look if they did not take away old features I liked in the original Gnome interface. OS X has a doc ,but you can still put shortcuts on the desktop. When it comes to Linux, I will probably stick to Debian and Ubuntu 10.04. In the future, if they don't put back some of the old things I liked about Ubuntu, I will have to abandon that os forever possibly.

  • @wooka64 the interface is only usedl if u graphic card can handle it, there us still classic gbome avaliable in 10.10

  • @wooka64: You can without any problems at all but icons on your unity desktop, but not on the netbook version. And if you like the OS X style I'd suggest you run gnome with docky and the globalmenu indicator. Also, you know that you can run the gnome environment or even the KDE environment in Ubuntu in the future too? It's not like you're forced to stick with Unity. :) But I think there will probably be a Gubuntu for gnome also.

  • @Whopzer : thats sounds cool. I knew you can run KDE on it but I rather run Genome for now. I use Ubuntu with my note book. Is their anyways to run the desktop version on my laptop without any problems?

  • @wooka64 desktop and netbook edition will merge in 11.04 so no need to choose

  • to me, this Unity thing looks identical to Mac OS X with dock on the left-side.

  • @leaonfm: Not really since OS X doesn't have the expanded window saving that unity has.

  • ok i installed 10.10, wheres the desktop???? it just boots up into the terminal

  • @bergsteinlife u may have the install corrupted.write the disk image again and install again

  • I like it :D

  • Just for laughs: bit . ly / dHe8IU ;)

  • Not sure I want this over my current gnome interface, it looks abit too much like OSX for my liking. Lack of compiz is also a downer for me. I'll still give it a good go, regardless.

  • @xyz98741 Can you say, "Troll"?

  • This shit has to be the ugliest user interface I've seen in my life. Please just delete it! Wipe it off your fucking hard disk!

    EPIC PHAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why all the software thingies want to transmigrate their ideas to look like competitors I say?

That sidebar looks like an Iphone :-|

  • This is reaaaallly slow compared to 9.10 on my N270/GMA950 netbook. What were they thinking? This is worse than beta quality software.

  • @chao1212 They are also trying to appeal for tablet users. Although i don't know is it working.

  • I don't get why everyone hates Unity. I like it. It is much better and smoother than the previous Netbook remix. But if you guys don't like it you can still run Gnome from the netbook remix

  • gotta love when haters and fanboys comment on OS videos and run their mouths about shit they don't fully understand. If you like the OS, try it/use it. if you don't then stfu and use whatever it is you like as your OS and stop bashing something that's different. simple as that.

  • to place the sidebar vertically for non-widescreen desktops would be a stupid idea

i hope for 11.04 they place it horizantally at the bottom... but then comes Apple and sues everyone... anyway i don't see a very profit of this... in the past there were shortcuts in the middle of the desktop and I could move them around... now it goes to the left and they're docked and I suppose less customizable

  • @alexgrinkov install openbox. theres no docks or bars or panels to make a fuss about

  • I think I'll stick with 10.04 for now.

  • @xyz98741 your an epic fail. i know your real name is steve ballmer, and if you spent less time flamming linux your company might beable to make a decent product

  • @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa78815 learn to spell retard

  • @xyz98741 sorry which word did i misspell

  • @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa78815 Let's us see if you can figure it out by yourself. I'll give you 20 hours :D

  • @xyz98741 nope cant find any spelling errors, just a lack of appropriate grammar and 's

  • @aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa78815 Look closer dude. It's so obvious, you still have 19.5 hours. Good luck.

  • @xyz98741 your an epic fail. i know your real name is steve ballmer, and if you spent less time flamming linux your company might beable to make a decent product

  • This is already included with the ubuntu netbook remix. I couldn't stand it even on my netbook so I just installed the regular version. I actually though it looked good at first glance but it just wouldn't work the way I wanted it to.

  • Oh great. Now we all get a Smart Phone interface shoved down our throats.

Personally, I'm not interested; Slackware anyone? I think Ubuntu will take a big hit over this if they continue down this path. I can't understand why anyone would want this refuge from Windows 98 on their desktop. Guess Shuttleworth suddenly got really insecure with just offering a good distro and now needs the love and affection of the cell phone zombies... Linux/GNU exciting again? Only for the insipid...

  • Wait for Ubuntu 11.04

  • it is always gtk :S

  • $ sudo apt-get install unity unity-place-applications unity-place-files

  • How to install it?

  • I hope this isn't the Pulse Audio fiasco all over again.

I like Pulse Audio NOW - now that it actually works but when Ubuntu first included it, nothing worked with it.

  • Its not as if Gnome was never without bugs, and so is the same for Unity. I will give Unity a go when it comes, and help better it by filing bug reports when I find them. Its not as if Ubuntu is completely removing Gnome 3 from being an option.

  • Who performs music from clip?=)

  • On my netbook this shit lags as hell!!!!!!!!!!

  • "ubuntu netbook remix only"

  • to fast featureshow, to slow at logos, i hate u fuckers.

  • This is exactly what I've been waiting for in Gnome for the last four years or so. A little like win 7, and makes more sensible use of the increasingly common widescreen. Should be good on the netbook too...

  • well, obviously we have a rapist in lincoln park

  • @vhmbdc Sp, close your window lol

  • The promise that opensource will drive innovation hasn't really come true. I hate to say it, but Apple and Microsoft kicks the shit out of Linux in terms of usability and consistence.

What Linux needs to do first before they will see any success and adoption, is to start working on collaboration instead of competing against eachother.

  • @cr561979 Amin!!! But i think Ubuntu is the way to go with linux... Too many distributions and too many choise is usually never a good thing... So everybody join cannonical and ubuntu and make perfect linux isted of making more and more distributions and more and more diversity...

  • @danilo986

Join Canonical ? Mark Shuttleworth already stated that Ubuntu isn't a "Democracy".

You could as well "join" Microsoft or Apple they do their own stuff too.Plus they can afford to hire thousands of IT-professionals which Canonical CAN'T ! Guess who will be the victor ? As i said there will never be a change unless opensource becomes organized.

  • @BlackCow99 I agree , I also will be sticking with original gnome interface... Unity Desktop is not for me... Worst idea yet... and it's not going to create unity in the Linux world it really going to divide the Linux world again into the unity Fanboys , vs original gnome Fanboys... Sad really... :(

  • Comment removed

  • Well Canoncial has announced that the GNOME desktop environment is being dumped as the default setup. Unity will be the default DE in Natty Narwhal. You might as well get used to the Google Chrome OS and Apple iOS GUIs too because that is the future. GNOME and other DEs will slowly die away in the coming years in terms of use and popularity.

  • I am confused...

I am searching for "system" but I can't find it...

I am using Ubuntu since Sunday...but on the Laptop of my friend, ubuntu is not looking like mine...

    can somebody helb me?

  • @93tEmptAtIOn Right click your menu's and click edit menu's, and then add system.

  • @OwNaGeOfDaLiAm ok thx

  • @93tEmptAtIOn I hope it helps, let me know if otherwise.

  • Having tried Unity on a netbook, i have to say I do NOT like it one bit. That huge sidebar takes so much space away from the applications. What is the point? Especially on netbooks, where screen real-estate is already at a premium.

  • i think that ubuntu should rally do a Tv spot, but that would require a lot of money. A lot of people would change their idea on witch os to use tough imo

  • Comment removed

  • Can't help myself but it's just a recycled Mac OS interface but instead of a bottom dock (where you can put much more icons), the dock is placed on the side. Even the top bar looks pretty the same as on Mac...so sorry guys, but nothing new here...

  • Comment removed

  • @FrantisekSmrckaIII "nothing new here" what kind of new environment or interface did you want ? It is a free alternative.

Look at the positive side, if you come from Mac OS X it may be easy to learn/adapt this operating system.

  • how can i hide that side menu!?!? ...it's such a stupid choice on a SO that's made for 10' displays ><

  • @jigglesnap "..You can't seriously claim that Gnome or KDE have good user interface design. . What do you have to back that up? Have you tried Windows XP or Windows 7?"

ZOMG you are such a nut. First off, the interface in XP makes you dive through layer upon layer of menus that make no sense, are organized sometimes by app, sometimes by vendor, it's a wreck. 7 is better in this regard, but no game-changer. Gimp replaced by F-Spot? Uh...did Photoshop replace iPhoto? You're a moron.

  • @brueckedude Who uses the menu to launch apps when you can just start typing the name of the app you want and press Enter? Stop making stupid straw man arguments.

And isn't it funny how users of an operating system named after a philosophy of community, interconnectedness, and good relations with other human beings are the ones constantly raging at everyone else, calling them idiots and morons for daring to criticize anything open source?

  • @jigglesnap Ubuntu is not name of the OS. It is a name of the distribution of the Linux OS.

  • @TheFri13 Linux is a kernel, not an OS. It does nothing by itself, and it could be swapped out with HURD or something and the rest of the OS could stay the same

  • @jigglesnap You are talking about Linux as it would be a microkernel. HURD is neither a kernel, it is a operating system. HURD's microkernel is GNU Mach or L4. Linux kernel is monolithic = operating system. Kernel is the older term for the operating system before there was a Server-Client operating system architecture where monolithic operating system (kernel) was sliced to parts as microkernel and servers.

  • @jigglesnap

Yeah...why don't they implement that feature in KDE! Oh...wait. They did. Like, an eternity ago. More FUD. This is why you get called names. Not because you criticise. Because you criticise with such vehemence-- and yet you are so wrong about all of it. Yep, you're an idiot, that's why. I'm not raging, you are. For page after page. I'm just calling a spade a spade. You've been trolling this video for weeks. Over your hate for...an OS. An OS I'm not convinced you have ever used.

  • @brueckedude Yep! As I said, Ubuntu's just a half-assed, buggy rip-off of Windows.

  • @jigglesnap

Yeah, I heard you say it. But you were wrong then and still are, dumbass. Suse had that feature before Vista did. WooHoo! Jigglefud for the fail.

  • People sees how fast my machines runs and wonders why, then they realise it runs Ubuntu.

Also, sometimes people sees how fast my machines runs XP and wonders why, then they realise I don't install any stupid junk from unknown sources nor have a hundred notifiers cluttering the systray, nor anti-virus / malware / spyware soaking up cpu cycles.

I use Ubuntu but dual boots to Windows for those few apps that has no direct linux counterpart.

  • I have updated Flash on Kubuntu to read the video. It would have been nice to use a free plugin instead of flash, but however, I'm happy to be able to see this ! Thanks for your help !

  • @doudoulolita Youtube supports html5-videos as long as your browser supports it.

  • Good, but it would look even better if the text would be in Ubuntu font!

  • @murderslastcrow I've used Ubuntu for 4 years as my main OS. I've tested it thoroughly. It sucks. There's lots of great open source software, which I'll continue to use, but it makes an absolutely terrible operating system. Firefox actually runs faster in Wine than the native Linux version. XD

In Windows 7, I access pretty much everything through search. It's great. Press the WinKey, type what you want, and press Enter. What does Ubuntu have? A bunch of competing, broken, half-assed copycats.

  • @TheFri13 And as much as people want it to be, it's not completely monolithic either, as it supports loadable modules. Anything that loads modules or object files externally is either a microkernel or hybrid kernel, and Linux qualifies as the latter (although it is more on the monolithic side than the microkernel side).

  • @doudoulolita: Search the Software Center for "Adobe Flash Plugin" and install it to be able to watch videos here. Sorry that @jigglesnap was spreading such FUD.

  • Comment removed

  • yeeaa fap fap fap

  • You must thumb me up if at one point in the video you tried to move the cursor away from the video and then realized it was part of the video

  • Hmm, gotta say, personally I like the current netbook interface better... these buttons are a tad too colorful for my liking...

  • What is the song?

  • i like it that on the bottom in little writing "Ubuntu Netbook Remix Only"

  • Come on! OSX and Windows 7 can just put the taskbar on the left to have better results.

  • @murderslastcrow I used KDE before I used Gnome, and it was terrible. Lip gloss on a pig, just trying to emulate Windows for lack of imagination. You can't seriously claim that Gnome or KDE have good user interface design. That is flat-out religious fantasy. What do you have to back that up? Have you tried Windows XP or Windows 7?

  • @murderslastcrow Open source software sucks when it comes to usability and design. This is obvious to anyone who's actually used it. There's very little thought or effort put into it. The best you can hope for is that the developers idolize OSX and tried to copy it or something (cough cough Shuttleworth). But even that will be half-assed and broken. Cargo cult usability. There's no innovation or understanding of design principles; just cloning existing software while making it "free".

  • I very like this video. :)

Instead of shutting down the PC at the end, I would rather reboot it. IMO, it would better express the renewal of an existing product. It would be more positive. But that's juste me. ;-)

  • @patalexandre Restart means that something wrong with the computer :P

    and thanks!

  • Awesome Ad!

  • @ThePuppetFigure Thanks!

  • NICE VIDEO

    ICANT WAIT UBUNTU 10,10

    BAY

  • @TMeLINUX Thanks!

  • And people say Ubuntu is confusing

  • @Chintendoeddman On the surface Ubuntu is not confusing. But when my ATI graphics card made every video flicker, when Ubuntu refused to see my tablet, when Ubuntu couldn't read half my files because they had copyrights in them, when all my photoshop files couldn't be read.. I said FUCK UBUNTU in a pissy mood. Until Linux understands that user friendliness != a command prompt I won't ever change from using Windows.

  • @Odenkay Too much red meat dude.... Lighten up.?

  • @Legomanfred sowwy

  • @Odenkay Linux will never, ever, understand user friendliness. It's been around for TWO DECADES and they still haven't get their act together. They never will. They care more about "freedom" than they care about the user.

  • @jigglesnap I replaced WinXP on my gf's laptop with Fedora 13. Her requirements were web browser, music player, ipod/iphone support and movie player. So I set her up with FireFox (plus adobe flash 32bit plugin), Rhythmbox, and Totem (plus gstreamer bad, ugly, ffmpeg codecs). Much to my delight she loves it. She finds those apps and desktop far more intuitive to use than her Window equivalents (itunes, winamp, vlc). All her hardware worked out of the box (3d accel, wireless).

  • @jigglesnap Can you please explain why do you talk about Linux while you are referring to GNOME, KDE Plasma Desktop/Netbook, LXDE, XFCE and so on? Linux is just a OS, not a graphical user interface. It does not have anykind user interface at all. Those even can be used with any other OS than just Linux. Like FreeBSD, SunOS, HURD or some of them even with NT!

  • @TheFri13 Linux is not an OS, it's a kernel. The OS is called "Ubuntu".

    <
