@Smoothbassline - Thanks, glad you dig the tasty licks. I probably won't do a lesson on them.... these are just things I make up as I go along, they are not anything I remember. But the good news is, they are right in front of you in the video and if you watch/listen enough, you should be able to figure them out.
@BassGuitarMag i play metal, fusion, prog, sludge, and rock. do you recommend this or the atlas or the gravity? 4 string and fingerpicking and i want an agressive but refined tone....... thanks
how would you compare this to an sr700 or srx for hardcore rock and puck along with the stingray and bongo im playing sr300 and i realy like it.It dose a great job for me as i play alot of red hot chilli peppers right up to metal core and i find it's like a jack of all trades but i want to realy want to step up.
@nachospole1 - This bass is neck-through-body, which gives it a slightly different character than the other basses you mentioned. A little less thumpy attack and more sustain. It's a great sounding bass, but different than Ibanez and MM. Listen to samples, and judge by the tone. Go to a music store and play some basses, judge by the feel. I can't tell you what to buy. They all have their good qualities.
Hey Ed, at the end I got the Fernandez Gravity 4-X (standard not deluxe) the sound was way better for my needs than the Tremor, sick bass and budget friendly too! you should review the Gravity, anyway just thanks for sharing your knowledge here.
Ed, nice review, & nice licks. Though I'm not in agreeance with the "lightweight" comment, it's not as bad as some! The weight does help it sustain all the way to tomorrow night if I want it to... I bought mine, used, two weeks before Peter Steele died and painted it flat black with blue hardware like he and I used to do his basses in black & green (before he got his factory green Tremor Deluxes and later switched back to Washburns) when we were close. Strange irony. R.I.P., Peter.
Hey Ed, thanks for this review, my folks gave me this bass in red for my birthday and I've been playing it for a few months now. It sounds really great and I really appreciate the review of the bass. I have one question though, I have a lot of fret buzz when I play it. Is there any way that I could be able to get rid of that or fix it?
@danieljapan - I have no way of knowing the cause of the buzzing. It could be the neck adjustment, the string height, the fret condition, or your technique. Take it to a repair guy.
I have some questions: the sound of the Tremor 5 Deluxe is the same that this Tremor 4 Deluxe?? How is the sound of the fifth string?? Would you recommend this bass to play funk-metal and slap?? What do you think is better for it, Gravity or Tremor?? Thanks Ed!!!
Can't say. I never tried the 5 string or the Gravity bass. I thought this one sounded real nice though, and certainly a good choice for aggressive music.
i have a request, i bought this SX jazz bass, can you try to get one over there and try it? i am glad i bought the SX, its $199,00 and sounds, plays and is almost the same as a Mexican Fender jazz bass
I know you play pickstyle in your reviews to cater to bassists who prefer said style, but how often do you play pickstyle in your shows or on your own?
This bass is pretty nice, at first I wasn't hearing much of a difference in the effects but then near or after the middle it really had a big effect on the sounds, sounds great.
If guitar world ever sent you a spector bass you should talk mention Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse, now you might not like that band but he's in another band called blotted science that I think everone would enjoy more, he's actually a great bass player, one of the best in metal IMO.
does anybody know how the cheaper fernandes tremor 5x sound im looking into a bass for thrash metal but cant spend over 700 bucks and its down to a the fernandes tremor 5x, traben chaos core or dean sledgehammer 5 and ive tried the latter 2 and love them but how are the cheaper fernandes cuz i just love the looks
hey there, i own the cheaper 4 string version, and its really awesome, if u want more info, look up for some reviews on the internet, they helped me a lot when i wanted to buy mine. good luck
Asgard222, true story..on the cheaper tremor basses, my neighbor got one out of the box and it was a turd, presence knob didn't do a thing. I bought the same bass (in blue not black) from a nearby store- it was heavier and I couldn't be happier with it. by all means, Tremor basses DO vary so if youre getting one, find a local dealer and actually play the thing first...
Well, thanks! I rarely get to play rock... I'm more in the jazz/blues/country circles in Austin. I'm probably too old (and impatient) to play in a rock band. But, as I write this, I'm on the road with Eric Burdon and The Animals... and I'm getting to rock out a bit. At 50 years old, I'm the youngest guy in the band.
What cool reviews. I've just started playing bass and I see this is the same guy who wrote the hal leonard bass method books i've just started learning from. The books are great by far the best beginner books out there for practical learning, thanks alot Ed !
I love how you THOROUGHLY go through everything. It seems that all the basses (and other gear) that you review always sounds great. I think it just goes to show that with a great player and a nice amp the bass doesn't make as much of a difference. Also the fact that there are so many great instruments being made these days at all price ranges.
Thanks for the complement. My goal is to show off the instrument's best qualities, and hopefully that's what happens. Now that I'm recording direct as well as miking the amp, it's easier to hear the true sound of the bass.
What kind of distortion pedal and or effect were you running the intro riff through?
