  • this was a wonderful movie

  • I love him <3

  • Eva Marie Saint = classy woman. No tats or piercings. Pay attention, girls. But still sexy. And of course Brando. What else is there to say about him?

  • Oh my God, EVA MARIE SAINT IS A BEAUTIFULL GODESS! I WISH I COULD MARRY HER!

  • Thanks, QueenMeshi, for sharing this ! An exquisite piece of acting and brilliant timing. Can watch it over and over again. Wondered the first time about the glove and was impressed by the detail. Attributed it to Kazan. Then I read your comment. The glove contributes so much and you don´t even have to be a Freudian to think so. :)

  • Still amazing, how natural actors are here. Brando revolutionized acting style forever. Before that people where stiff and just spewed their fast dialogue out, like a machine gun, and that was concidered as acting.

  • @Quex01 Actually, actors before Brando could be quite stiff. The biggest problem I have with modern actors is they shoot only their heads and so they are not really very good at expressing with their bodies.

  • @Quex01 Although I basically agree with you, some of those actors (or actresses) who spoke like machine guns (Cagney, and in particular John Garfield) needed to exist in order for Brando to exist.

  • The simple idea of him putting the glove on was genius, it gave her reason to stay and him a reason to try and keep her there

  • Saw that dance scene someone posted on Youtube, Eva Marie Saint was so hot there!!!

  • @MultiCgp Eva Marie Saint was hot in every minute of this film

  • Kazan said keep rolling. Classic. Heartbreaking.

  • She didn't mean to drop the glove. And when she asks for it back, Marlon keeps it. Then puts it on. Kazan didn't tell them to do that. It was all Marlon. Later, they (the critics) said it represented "Purity" as Marlon's character was changing and developing a conscious. They say a lot of things trying to explain genius.

  • This whole movie feels timeless. It could've been made at any time.

  • this scene is so romantic, especially the move with picking up her glove and wearing it, that was a delicate move from him

  • In my opinion this is one of the great scenes in movie history, I know thats a bold statement but you think about it. The scenes as they were at the time, two people sussing each other out, without bad language or sexual movements but at the same time[to me anyway] involving sexuality, will this lead anywhere?, how long could Terry be tender?,then the lovely music of Bernstein, Brilliant altogether.

  • Lil Trivia for you all: when she drops the white Gloves and Terry picks it up and starts playing with it, then finally puts it on. THAT wasn't in the script AT ALL...he improvised the entire scene. WHAT A GENIUS! I mean, he didn't break out of character at all, and the director just kept on with it.. BRILLIANT

    -BRANDO

  • This scene is so good. The writing, the acting,it all comes together beautifully.Marlon Brando really mastered the bodylanguage,it shows in this scene.

  • it's so cute how he wears her glove.

  • Hahahahaha...Tarrytown: the country! Hahahahahaha...boy, things have changed.

  • It's so hot at 3:30 when he stops chewing his gum and exhales. There's something so hot about that. Also at 3:25 when he gets a look on his face like "you can't be that innocent". Brando was The Man. So sexy.

  • @robin77661 whao, dude, i just think there's something about that part. so i read your comment then checked it out again. it's just EXACTLY what you say, man! especially 'you can't be that innocent' part. thump up!

  • He has his lines written on that glove.

Also on the fence post and other places.

Brando was famous for having his lines written everywhere because he had bad memory. That's also why there are all those cuts in the film that you really wouldn't expect for such a simple scene.

  • @guitarcapo He did something similar in The Godfather. However, I have never heard that he had his lines on that glove. He simply improvised picking it up after she accidentally dropped it during the scene.

  • @guitarcapo If you watch the interview of Robert Duvall talking about Brando, Brando didn't start doing the lines on props until "The Chase," in the 1960s. Brando did Broadway for years; he could memorize lines. He just didn't want to anymore when he got older. This scene is just brilliant acting by Brando. He wasn't inhibited by the script and blocking.

  • @guitarcapo Brando did not have a bad memory. He was reciting whole Shakespeare soliloquies to Harry Dean Stanton and Sean Pean up until his death at age 80 in 2004. Throughout most of his film career, especially after the 70s, Brando preferred having his dialogue taped on co-star's forehead and posted in random places because he felt the affect was more nature than memorizing lines and waiting for his cue. Brando was also unconventional and he liked doing things his way.

  • That's real acting....

    Boy I miss those days!

  • Damn hes smart with that stuff.

  • nice. That gaze with the hint of smile

  • There were too many guys around there with only one thing on their mind. What did Terry have on his mind?

  • @impCaesarAvg Nothin' .... no, really, he had nothing on his mind :D

  • Comment removed

  • he felt guilty.

  • @impCaesarAvg

Whatever, what did Eva have on her mind?

  • @jairus She's thinking, "With this guy, would I have healthy babies? Would they be strong, smart, attractive, and successful?"

  • @impCaesarAvg more than ONE thing.

  • That silent exchange from 3:03 to 3:10... She knows exactly what she's doing! ;>

  • The boy killed the pidgeons because Terry testified. The rebel that the kid imagined Terry was, is killed with that turn by Brando´s character...althought for us its in that moment that he truly rebels...

  • Thanks for providing that information about the glove. I always wanted to know whether that was Brando improvising or whether it was in the script. He's that good of an actor. Truly the best actor that ever graced the screen.

  • @koobs78 'Revenge' for Terry's testimony in front of the Waterfront Commission..

  • thanks for uploading a good quality version

  • I love the way Edie (Eva Marie Saint) keeps motioning and subtly looking at the glove, trying to get it back off Terry....

  • The subtlety is what makes this scene. In the dialogue, the glances the physical gestures to each other. Just a sublime piece of acting from them both. It's amazing that this is Eva Marie Saint's first film role.

  • @TheTibetanMonk The most amazing thing is that the glove wasn't supposed to fall so when Brando picked it up the way he and Eva-Marie act is pure improvisation!!
