  • ottima pronuncia italiana. bella voce e bella esecuzione

  • Beautifully performed.

  • In falsetto I could sing it to. In falsetto a bass could sing it.

  • what a beautiful performance

  • people who aren't familiar with this repertoire should not write comments......either positive or negative.... they sound really ignorant and stupid

  • @nicosupersex they don't only SOUND ignorant and stupid... the fact is, they ARE ignorant and stupid :).

  • @ AndyDougs - They also had a Boy's vocal mechanism with a Man's mouth and resonating cavities (Sinuses). The joint disorder that allude to also gave them enlarged ribcage and therefore gave them enormous lung power. They began training so young that add all those things together and, by all accounts, they were capable of vocal feats unobtainable by Woman or "whole" Man. Even the scan recordings we have are flawed - I believe we may never know just what a Castrato in His Prime sounded like...

  • "BRAVO"

  • can i get an instrumental version of this??i also want to try singing it

  • This piece was written for a male counter-tenor yes?

  • @ScapularSaves im not sure but i think its written for a castrato

  • @aravis123 That is right. Händel wrote this role in Serse for a castroto called Sensino.

  • @aravis123 Sorry castrato* misspelled, haha

  • @ScapularSaves No, for a castrato.

  • This is a beautiful rendition but there is something lacking. Nicholas Spanos's version is on a completely different level, it just soars.

  • Very beautiful. Great aria. Great rendition. Though the version I've ever heard is Nicholas Spanos's.

  • Yoshikazu Mera best

  • @ostgur no way...

  • I think is too fast

  • @Cannabich So what if he were? After this show of perfect musicality, is that all you have to say? Please say something that he will take you out of your comment's shallowness....

  • @Cannabich

    He is married and straight!

  • @Cannabich no, he is not Gay, he is heterosexual

  • @LordMagros Then it is neutered. Otherwise, the man can sing so high ...

  • @Cannabich no, he is not neutered, he is a countertenor, no a Castrati, for example Alfred Deller was a countertenor, and he had a child, Mark Deller, countertenor too.

  • Mir persönlich gefällt das Lied von Jochen Kowalski gesungen besser

  • excelente. daniel, brazil.

  • Flipping through the different artists and listening to the ranges, I suppose one's impression falls upon the range of pitch with each voice. I would have to say that Castrato, or its nearest counterpart, is so unique it really doesn't have a true benchmark. Thankfully, the razor has been retired for minors who didn't really have a choice but the range of masculine tinged, feminine tinged and child ranges are varied enough that ages and genders have a chance to identify with a version.

  • FAKE

  • @wasww26 Um...fake in what way?

  • I can play this on piano and in my book is the name of the peace "Largo"

  • @tuss88 Take no notice of your book. The tempo is larghetto.

  • @tuss88 Hello Tuss, it is also called Largo as well as Ombra mai fu. In the opera 'Serse', it has that title. Well done for playing it on the piano. It is a lovely piece of music. :-)

  • @tuss88 It IS the "largo" (largo is a slow tempo) from "Xerxes". To destinguish it from other largos, you can call it by (par of) the first sentence sung (common practice), in this case, "Umbra mai fu". I'm sure you can get your hands on a couple of hundreds different largos, but this is the only Umbra mai fu, though it may be arranged differently.

  • Maravilhosa a voz do André.

  • hermoso!!!

  • love the ending, "women weren't allowed to sing in churches"

    and go andreas scholl!!!!

  • this seems to be a documentary... could anyone tell me what the title is please?

  • this just makes me proud to be a countertenor myself...

  • An angel voice. Thanks Andreas!!!!

  • Wonderful! Finally a man who sings this like a man!

  • @LA6NPA What do you mean?

  • @LordHettrick Well... a lot of the recordings I've heard have featured counter tenors who sound more feminine. Andreas Scholl has more of a masculine timbre. And his worked hard to get that timbre too.

  • @LordHettrick A good example as to what I mean is David Daniels. A good counter tenor in his own right, but he sounds like a girl.

  • @LA6NPA :)

  • @LA6NPA jokes?

  • @AndyDougs Nope! :)

  • @LA6NPA how can imitating a castrato - a singer that effectively never reaches puberty - possibly sound manly?

  • @AndyDougs It's more of an approximation than an imitation. It's not supposed to sound like a woman, that's what you have women for. Also, the roles you would use castrati for were usually very manly and powerful. I know this sounds a bit weird, but one of the biproducts of being castrated is that you become very tall and broad sholdered. You would be towering over anyone else on stage, and that does lend to a rather manly impression. It does not turn you into a "ladyboy".

  • Relax folks! His interpretation is pleasant, but there are many others with more nuance and more interesting phrasing out there.

  • examples please

  • Thank you so much! I have been looking for a recording of this piece by Scholl.

  • SUBLIME

  • Great!! I cant say any more. Great!!!!!!!!

  • beautfiul and he's handsome :)

  • absolutely gorgeous!

  • Absolutly Fantastic!

  • I really like this man. Scholl is one of the best counter-tenors at present.

His repertoire is also so diverse.

I was listening to his interpretations of English folk songs a while ago..; very enjoyable.

  • Congratulations on such a delightfull performance

  • Very good, only, more lento, like Caruso, some pizzicato and some largo

  • Belo, belíssimo.

  • la voix des anges! superbe! magnifique!!!...

  • 'Sigh'

  • That's the feeling that a piece like this needs

    *cry*

  • This is the first thing I've heard from Andreas. The first "o-o-o-o" sent shivers down my spine. I'd never heard anything quite like it before.

  • you mean this high pitch,or something like that...yeah,he seems like not having made many

super-high pieces, but that not means he could not, actually he does have a very wide range of voice, with which he sings high stuff easy,i think,in fact he sings this high often, but we've never noticed, because his performences are always so agile and smooth, just like something easy.o i love him.支持!!

  • And his speaking voice is good to listen to. It's really lucky when one looks younger then their age, but Scholl looked quite like a big-grown child here... Now that he's 40, he looks 20-something.

  • This one's to you, Mike Johnson!

  • Excellent pronunciation too!

  • Bless! He's so young looking there! Beautiful! (Of course he is still young looking...)

  • It's beautiful

  • those were the days!
