The politics involved with getting this as a true competitor for fossil fuels is frustrating. Big business doesn't want competition and big business more or less controls the US government. The future is visible but untouchable.
The only problem that I see with this type of production of algae fuel is the consumption of water. I am not an expert on this but is it more efficient to grow algae in an enclosed system or like the way that it is done on this video. I think that a large amount of the water is lost due to evaporation. We all know that the supply of fresh water is limited and that we should not waste it. Also wouldn't these open ponds have problems with the ecosystem in the desert?
The water doesn't have to be fresh water or even clean salt water. The reason for putting them into dessert areas is for the abundance of sunlight, which promotes quick algae growth, but the ponds are not just placed helter-skelter in the dessert, they are contained. However, algae can also grow in cold regions, so the potential is world wide. The Auto Channel website has several different stories about algae-based fuel production that you might find informative.
I strongly beleive a mix of electric cars and bio fuels from algae are the ways of the future. Electric cars are great for the passanger or commuter but we still need liquid fuels for heavy equipment, trucks, ships, plains ext... They will go hand in hand nicely because coal power plants make the power for the EC also make CO2 which can be captured and use in the Algae growing process. Great stuff! I cant wait to see how it all plays out! Love what these guys are doing!!!
@Techie223 actually electric vehicles are practical for daily use. most people drive less than 40 miles a day, far below the range of a modern electric vehicle. the problem is that if you ever want to take a long trip you're screwed, unless you have a generator back up like the Chevy Volt. I personally think this is the best system for a car and will be the standard some day.
Actually it's a very real solution that could go into full production tomorrow with government funding, but the U.S. government is so dependent on the political contributions from major oil companies that they won't get involved since it would hurt the world oil industry. What's sad is the technology exists to change the world for the better, but a few hundred rich a-holes could keep it from happening.

@oeyesea
To be specific it's Big Oil-Gasoline that doesn't want anything to interfere with their pot o'gold. So they keep all the politicians fat and happy.

let hope that Gov. will not get involved! This is a great example of Enterprise fixing a problem without Gov guidance.
