Thanks for tips but for some reason I suck regardless I mean my dad draws so good and I draw like crap I don't know maybe my dads talent will rub off on me someday but for now I suck
777 YOUR recommendation of drawing an image multiple times cannot be stressed enough!! practice makes perfect!! it is the best advice for any artist!! 777 I liked the drawings you did from your brain without using a reference, It is that skill I would like to see more people develop....unfortunately everyone gives up and takes manga/comic book lessons... which is cool looking art, but when you have it become the new industry standard, it just ruins an artists individuality/unique characteristic
I feel worse about my self because I have been drawing since I was 6 and that's grade one and your old "from the mind" things are better than mine please someone reply and tell my why I suck at something I do constantly
Sometimes I wonder if i'm never gonna be able to move on. Even your old "from the mind" sketches are better than mine. I'm pretty good at copies, but that's all i can do. I wonder if my mind will never be able to work like that. I really just get scared and wonder if I'm wasting my time. I'm afraid to do an art class because I'm afraid of drawing really bad and failing in the class.
@animemefreak74 comparing yourself to professionals its the WORST thing you can do as a beginner. your best is your best, keep trying, drawing takes A LOT of time, a little more or less to everyone since we learn at a different rate. Keep trying, challenge yourself, reference stuff, just practice. Practice makes perfect.
the fact that you found some of your old drawings okay even thought they were terrible provides me with laugther and motivation not to low my standarts like that. for that I thank you.
is it possible to do characters and environments with inking, coloring, drawing, painting etc..? not entirely a master at tricks of all trades but become somewhat of an expert in multiple areas
well i give up too man i started again and gave up again and now im really depressed!I thought i had a talent man... every told me i had talent at drawing..pff i never draw good enough for me!I mean people tell me that my drawings rock and i hate em...i hate that...i really wanna be talented at sth...I've tryed everything so far... i mean... everything... and i now ended drawing again... badly though.....i dont have patience so i have a little problem ...
i really love your work :) past few years ive had depression and found it hard to find motivation to do pretty much everythink including my art put after watch some of your videos including this one if has motivated me alot to push myself to carry on my art for what i like to thank you :) x
is it okay to just draw? You know like just drawing whatever? Because I know that I'm only 14 and can not go to a art school just yet. I'm pretty sucky but I think art is art whether it looks dumb or not.
Can you do an entire series teaching all the important information that you said you learned from the books and videos? Just the important information about shapes and stuff that would help one to understand how to draw people, objects, animals, ect. as well as coloring. That'd be so helpful.
Bahh, I got all pumped up by reading the comments. Then I saw your work is still 10 times better than my best. You did give me good information though. I never draw from reference because I don't like it, but the video made me understand why I need to. Thanks.
Thank you so much. You have no idea how helpful this was. I have become super frustrated with my art lately and I feel so pressured to be the best of the best when I know Im not that good yet and I was literally just about to give up on 8 years of taking art classes. This has really helped me and Im going to go watch all your other videos plus some others and do a lot more practicing to try and become the artist I have always wanted to be.
You make me feel so much better about my art. I have a lot to learn (or, more accurately, I need to practice more), but I'm not horrible. Love your videos!
Im 19 and I just got into art school and im not that good there are tons of people better than me am I too late in the game to become a full fledged concept artist?
@architectus777 How long have you been drawing? How long did it take you to draw that well? Did you take any drawing classes? What advice would you give to new artists?
thank you for posting this, I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, but never really put the time in it to get better, thank you for motivating me to keep practicing.
oh thanks man i would like to keep drawing as a back up, but im very busy with my musical knowledge.too bad theres only 24 hours in a day my day needs to have at least 40. but this video made me more motivated to keep up my drawing, thanks again for the inspiration and motivation.
I would like to be a concept artist as a career and I know that you said that concept artists must be able to draw from their mind and so I need to ask...do you have any advice for aspiring concept artists?
@Lanedude08 Draw something from life, then wait 10-20 minutes, and draw the same thing again, but this time without looking at the real object, and without referencing your own work.
hey .. can u help me ??? i want to become artist .. i draw sketches of celebrities and famous peoples in about 2 hours ...and oil portraits of celebrities that everyone recognises easily...also i have made sketches of my brother and friends from live and i haven't learned drawing 4m anywhere yet ... i am doing B.tech but i got no more interest in studying ... if u say i can show u my drawings ... plzzz help me out by telling whether i can end up in a good artist or not .. plzz reply thanks!
@littlenit1 It depends what kind of artist you want to be. Being able to draw what you see isn't all that important a talent in the art world, being able to draw from your mind is, such as comics. Concept artists, for example, must not only be able to draw from their mind, but they must be able to do it quickly and creatively.
@architectus777 i have heard many great painters do use a refrence whether photo or live models etc. why so ??? they have even done lot of study on human anatomy ... so why can't they create realistic type portrait completely from their mind ?? i think they should be able to ...
srsly this vid was great because you describe what i feel exactly and im sure others do aswell! frmo reference i can do pretty dam good! but from my mind pretty bad :P haha im trying to improve that and slowly am but its hard to keep at it since it takes a lot of time and practice to get better! but srsly you give confidence to people in this vid its pretty cool

@architectus777 so if i look at a image and break it down into simple shapes to draw the image will that teach me the things i need to know to draw characters for comic books?
@jjstudios100 It will, yeah, but for comic books, you are going to want to practice the human figure a lot. I'd check out my free videos on how to draw the human figure from your mind.
WOW! THANK YOU! i have always been so insecure about my artwork. i know i have the potential to draw great things but i have been only good at drawing from a reference like you and it had really shot me down because i was never able to draw the visions i had in my mind only from pictures and such i feel so much better knowing someone also had the same problem and was able to tune into their mind and learn to be able to create! im very much into Jhonen Vasquez work but more like JTHM than Zim
If it came from your mind and you put it on paper, it by default isn't horrible. You've won. That's my attitude towards art. What is it? Why are we doing it? It's the process. First is your own enjoyment and second is making others enjoyment.
This really help't me boost up my confidence. Now i remain hopeful i'd be able to draw proportions and maiby inprove on my art. Cause they'v been pretty simple so far lol
i just started back at drwing a month ago and i can't draw a human figure. so should i just keep trying to draw a human figure and reading books or something else?
LOL! i love looking back at my old work. Its like stepping back into my mind from the past. I try to remember what i was doing the day i drew it. I feel its really good to look back at your work. It shows the level of how well you can transfer your creativity to the paper.
As someone using refs, studying anatomy, and etc...it's very helpful to see your videos, & to have you share your early work with us[it wasn't so bad!;)]...lots of videos I find on youtube & deviantArt are very tiresome and dull to watch:/[and I'm lazy to start with, like a lot of people watching your vids,I guess!?:D]You have an easy and pleasant manner, and your videos are very watchable and helpful..thanks for sharing,I shall have to check out more of your work!*hugs*:)
Your videos helped me so much. I just started the first art class in my high school career, and my teacher was really surprised on how well I did. I have the same story with wanting to make a comic book/ manga, except I am a little bit earlier. The muscle work, line work, key shading spots on the human figure, and more of the how to draw (insert character here) videos would help so much! Keep doing what you are doing! You are so awesome!
FFS, My highschool years I didn't draw at all, because I thought it was too boring. Now I have to friggin make up for the time that I've lost not drawing. Now I draw like 6+ hours a day to make up -.-
For everyone who want to give up. DON'T!! Draw for 3 months, then look back at the work you've done, you'll see HUGE improvements!!
holy shit yetserday i was ready to give up on everythng to do with my art even my graffiti but since watchig this video and seeing you drawings and the goal that u have acomplished boosts my confidence that some day i will be able to draw like that ty for making this video :)
I did the same thing. Around 1996-97 I stopped drawing for a very long time. I would pick up the pencil every 7-8 months only because someone asked me to draw something. When I draw by looking at something it always comes out great but from my mind it's horrible. It's funny how you said try to draw from life then from the mind. I tried it a few weeks back and it came out almost just as perfect. So that is really good advice.
Man!! I stop drawing since 1996. But now I started back since 2009 (at the age of 31). But it's not easy since I work full time and finding the time is not easy. But I try anyway to draw as much as possible. Thanks for this video. Peace
The suggestion you made, about drawing something from life, then drawing it again a short while later from your mind sounds interesting... I'll have to give that a shot. Thanks!
My art class sucked. every time we had it, he just told us to draw what ever we wanted :( I want to be some sort of concept artist. But my drawings looks worse than the once u did in 1995.
@IbbChr Just keep doing the exercises and read books etc. Also, go to my site and download the free software Master Edit. I'm always updating it with newer images. I want to completely replace the models with better ones, which I will do soon.
Dude you are a great drawer please make a FaceBook Page

If it came from your mind and you put it on paper, it by default isn't horrible. You've won. That's my attitude towards art. What is it? Why are we doing it? It's the process. First is your own enjoyment and second is making others enjoyment.

drawing is a hobby of mine can i still be a good artist?
acg91495 1 year ago
@acg91495
of course you can, be patience, do your research, & be consistent if you do all that then you'll be fine.
That's good advice, I should apply that to my situation. :P

LOL! i love looking back at my old work.

You are so awesome!

do you have a video where you tell how to do clean line work like you said you didn't do in your earlier days?

I agree 100000%
FFS, My highschool years I didn't draw at all, because I thought it was too boring. Now I have to friggin make up for the time that I've lost not drawing. Now I draw like 6+ hours a day to make up -.-
For everyone who want to give up. DON'T!! Draw for 3 months, then look back at the work you've done, you'll see HUGE improvements!!

I want to completely replace the models with better ones, which I will do soon.
architectus777 1 year ago
@architectus777 I mean Pose Master, not Master Edit, sorry.

Don't give up dude,, you're still young, it wasn't until I was like.. 18-19 when I wanted to become a concept artist.
Don't be intimidated by great artists, be inspired by them.
