  • I think this is one of the best versions of this piece on the youtubez.

  • ...fantastic

  • Michael is always the best!!!

  • Michael Chance and Roy Goodman are greates baroque soloist!!!

  • So beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing.

  • wow I never knew the person singing was a man. what an amazingly high voice for a man.... great performance...great to reflect on and meditate on... If we never had the word of God we would never have such great creative works displayed in such a beautiful creative expression ! Bless the Lord, oh my soul!

  • @Nadeshda05 : Michael Chance is a counter-tenor. That's what the high voice is called. I've heard him sing live - the recording doesn't do him justice! His actual voice is fuller, warmer. Amazing.

  • Perfect!!

  • So wonderful. But my goodness, the first violinist sure has his bow tight.

  • este é verdadeiramente um som dos céus!

  • WONDERFUL.Violin and counter tenor combined at their very best!!!

  • Sublime. The genius of Bach and the fine art of Chance, Goodman, and the Brandenburg Consort. Bravi tutti!

  • I'm listening to an angel.............

  • The best Embarme Dich I ever heard.

  • I realized the fact that person's voice is the best in the world^^

  • Whoever disliked this has no business speaking about music ever again. This is one of the GREATEST ARIAS ever written.

  • FannnTasstikkk :)

  • I am to impressed! They did wonderful...

  • Haunting theme

  • Amazing

  • 2:12-2:17.gives me the tingles... tho could be slower :p

    and again @ 4:48-52 :D :D

  • Fantastisch : )

  • amazing!!!

  • @Liliane4listening Ochen' krasivyi i intelligentnyi kommentarii! Bravo! 5 stars:-)

  • @Liliane4listening Spasibo i vam za otvet. V etom vy absolyutno pravy, k sozhaleniyu....

  • @Liliane4listening; Teljessen igaza van, absolutely right, ochin kracivi, ganz recht! wundershon.

  • Beautiful!

  • HOW SUBLIME BACH'S MUSIC IS

  • Dude that violinist RIGHT in the beginning needs to let some SERIOUS tension off that bow!

  • @AYEcorolla I think that might be a baroque violin bow, which is different from a conventional bow in that it actually curves away from the bow hair. Baroque players often use these, along with period correct insturments.

But you are right that a conventional bow should not look like that.

  • @AYEcorolla Its a renaissance bow,not like other bows we use in orchestra, maybe a lot strange for you dude

  • Agios O Theos,

    Agios Iskyros,

    Agios Athanatos,

    eleison imas.

  • @bonessanches22

was hat das hiermit zu tun?

  • @bonessanches22 and that means? :s

  • I don't know but I have to laugh when the guy starts singing as if you expect a woman to jump out.

  • @Rich34909 Check out Philippe Jaroussky too

  • @Rich34909 a very comon reaction. Once a girl did actually burst ou laughing when I started singing, it was quite amusing to see her mother's embarassed reaction :p

  • why this piece is the same as the second movement of musical's offering?????Anyone can tell me?

  • Enchanting! Have you ever attended Bach's Johannes Passion? Bach wrote it few years before he wrote the Matthäus. Dutch baroque icon Ton Koopman and his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir is performing the Johannes Passion in the Westerkerk in Amsterdam on April 9 and 10, 2011.

  • Beautiful! Bach is otherwoldly indeed. The first time I noticed I thought I just died and was transfered to the afterlive.

  • Almost perfect.

He did not need to make that ugly portamento in the beginning, though. Pity..

  • It seems a little fast. I like it though.

  • version trop british (trop maniérée)

  • Version trop british et trop maniérée

  • c'est gniale

  • Nice Baroque Violin

  • Nice Baroque Violin

  • I have had the pleasure of meeting and studying with Mr Chance, and he has a normal, masculin-sounding speaking voice, just so we're clear on that! He is an amazingly talented singer, and extremely skilled. Hard work, perseverance, and talent - that's how he manages to sing so beautifully. It is absolutely breathtaking to hear him sing live, and I feel extremely lucky to have had that chance. (No pun intended...)

  • @ReaIly yazıp siliyorum ikide bir neyse küfür etmyecem.

  • Overwhelming

  • Amazing what NO TESTICLES can do for your singing career :)

  • @snoobeagle Oh my God, there are so many countertenors nowadays, and still so many people write this nonsense on their videos! Chance and all the others have their TESTICLES ON! It's just a singing technique, called falsetto. They are not castrati, and have different vocal characteristics. They are normal men, and nothing is missing. They sing like that for the BEAUTY OF SOUND, as there's special MAGIC which is found only in high MALE voices and nowhere else. They are NOT castrated!!!!

  • @serenaluce I won't ask how you know. :)

  • @snoobeagle Do you REALLY think that all countertenors are CASTRATED?! LOL Are you a man? If you don't know it, every man and even a woman can sing in falsetto to produces higher and more beautiful sounds. It's a natural ability! You can try to sing like that too. It's the most difficult, sophisticated TECHNIQUE. But the highest art is to make it sound that smooth and effortless as if it were his NATURAL VOICE! Only several CTs sing in their unbroken voice. I prefer Spanos's version to Chance's

  • @serenaluce So you don't KNOW then.

  • @snoobeagle Do you KNOW all the artists intimately and can PROVE that countertenors in this case have no testicles?! LOL You comments make no sense at all. CTs are NORMAL men who sing that high only because they use a different technique, usually falsetto, and they are not castrated! Get over it already!

  • @serenaluce Nope, but then again, I was never adamant in claiming a singer had or didn't have gonads. What did you learn today?

  • @snoobeagle What did YOU learn? Can you just listen to beautiful singing, great art without all these naturalistic details?! It's only about MUSIC, ARTISTRY, not phisiology! It's a MUSICAL video! If you are so interested in castration you can read about it e.g. on the Internet and discuss it on other sites. Modern countertenors are NOT castrati. It's just a TECHNIQUE! Can't you just be carried away by the SINGING and forget about testicles, gonards, etc?! I feel sorry for you...

  • @serenaluce I learned there are some people out there who go nuts (pardon the pun) when you postulate a singer has no nuts. :)

  • @snoobeagle Hahaha! Very funny! Actually, I don't go nuts, but I'm so surprised that at our time when there are many countertenors the majority of all people are still so ignorant, and can't behave themself listening to MUSIC and VOICE, and only speculate if they are all castrated or all gays... It has nothing to do with singing technique. It's really so sad...

  • How is it that his voice is so high? I've never heard anything like it.

  • I love love love Michael Chance - such a gorgeous sound coupled with heartfelt emotion!

  • This is my favorite aria in Matthew's Passion!

  • @BlindMegara what do the words mean?

  • @guitarmachine13 Erbame dic means "Have mercy on me". Only when you understand the words can you appreciate the full beauty of the music.

  • @BlindMegara I can understand you perfectly that you say it as Michael Chance is great! One of my favourites. But Spanos is my favourite number one:-). But I fully agree with you here. CTs are much better for this aria and Sacred music at all than women as such pieces should sound heavenly and sublime which can take you to a better world, and there's such a magic only in high male voices and not in female. Women can sound beautiful but with their singing I stay in this world... Sorry.

  • Erbarme dich is so pur, Bach at his best and Chance the perfect voice. for me Spanos doesn't reach that perfection.

Erbarme dich...

  • @BlindMegara Actually, tastes differ. It's wonderful that we have many great interpretations and can choose which is closer to each of us. For me it's Spanos who reaches this perfection. It's just too good to be true! His version is just so special and unusual! But there are great versions which come close and I appreciate all of them: Daniel Taylor (unfortunately, only on my CD and not on YT), Chance and Scholl's. I know that Kowalski sings it too, but I've never heard it. Must be great too...

  • This is the beauty

  • Meaning that he´s got the right color of voice for this Bach. Now humbly, then exalted, almost arrogantly demanding at times and desparate. The pain like a delicate veil that tears off softly, hopelessly. The heart expands, then sinks forever. Haunting voice for years to come.

  • I´m so grateful for this incredibly, delicately dramatic rendition of the Aria. Mr. Chance is able to command vocal technique and make it seem effortless or completely spontaneous. Still a male voice being recognizable in him (again: thank you), it goes beyond, toward trascendence, he keeps reaching further, further away to convey the meaning of the words: Have Mercy.

  • @serenaluce Oh yes, you should just have a better look on my channel which whom I befriended with. But who cares how many. I choose my friends and don't have to be friends with 100 of people like you only for show. I don't fight against countertenors. I like the singing of a lot of them. But as I see you are not able to read comments properly, answering you makes no sense at all. Just go on with your coffe talk about the bad behaviour and stupid opinions about others. Lol

  • @serenaluce Dear, I meant I do not have to be friends with 100s of people. You have 132 friends, wow, yes I am totally jealous. What arguments do you have? Talking about friends on youtube? Yes this makes no sense at all. By the way his name is kulturistimarsch not kulturist. So you really need help with reading.

  • @ungiornodiregno You see, we have clarified all the points now. But I don't need glasses:-). Thanks for visiting my channel too. You can find great music there too. You see, actually we have much in common! Why don't we become friends too?! LOL In any case, why waste our time arguing about something irrelevent?! Happy listening to you with the stuff you like and to me with the stuff I like! Have a nice day! I still prefer civilized exchange of opinions even in a heated discussion, not oscenities

  • @CONTRALTUS I was just kiddin', because I do not believe there exists true art or a true way of interpreting baroque music. I like Chance in general because of the beautiful nuances of his vocal tone. But here I do not like the straight producing of tones. Many who perform baroque are doing this and I don't understand why it is not possible to bring vibrato in the performance. You may listen to his Mozart arias. These are very beautiful sung!

  • Very beautiful! Great Chance! Bravo! One of the best countertenors ever! Thanks for posting.

  • I know his son, Alex Chance, who is also an insanely good countertenor.

  • @arpeggio1358 I fully agree with you. That kulturistmarsch doesn't even know for himself what he feels listening to countertenors but already is not shy to post obscene comments about them. Really, nobody pushes him to like them. Why not listen to what he likes instead like his beloved Genaux and Pavarotti and be happy?! He must be a masochist then if he listens to what he hates and his agenda on YT is just bashing ALL CTs without judging who is great like Chance or Spanos and who is bad like PJ

  • This is the perfection of music! If you've ever wondered whether there could be a perfect piece of music, this is proof that they do exist.

  • BEAUTIFUL. Absolute perfection. And may I say, Mr. Chance is totally sexy.

  • ... notice that the violinist plays without a chin rest and with an older style bow ... and holds the bow further up the stick ... .

  • I LOVE IT AS A TRADITIONAL STORY AND SONG NOT A BELIEF:) thanks for posting

  • i want to melt when i hear this

  • ... a spotted kerchief !!!??? So unBiblical !

  • IF Bach et al had been allowed to use women in public performances of church pieces such as this, I wonder if he would have done so?

    We'll never know.

I'm just pleased contraltos are now free to perform publicly. And BOY do they get a lot of work. I've been looking for one for the ensemble - guess what - they're all booked.

  • this guy needs to take some testosterone

  • @minasgekos What for? Michael Chance is a countertenor. He sings like that just because it's such a technique and not a defect. And he is one of the greatest countertenors ever! His version is just stunning, even though I personally also prefer Nicholas Spanos's interpretation...

  • @minasgekos : On Tuesdays in the boxing ring of course !

  • Truly this music must be sound in Bach times. Other performances are beautiful but untrue. Well done!

  • @MrJotemwu : Very clever response !

  • Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous. To me, Bach's intentions shine through in this performance, and that matters more more than anything else.

  • Very beautifully sung. Great Chance. Great Bach. Eternal music. The best version I've ever heard is Nicholas Spanos's. That is just otherworldly.

  • @tamerlano236 : Eternal music when it comes to the way of the world yes !

  • @tamerlano236 oh come on!

  • @TZAVELENA Why come on? Is it supposed to be negative? I also think that it's an eternal piece of music and that Spanos's version is the best and just other worldly though I like Chance's rendition very much too and find it otherworldly too. I prefer it to Scholl's. Tastes differ. Why not discuss our preferences and explain what exactly we like more in a certain rendition? It's the beauty of YT! There's another great version on YT - Guillon's! What is your favourite version?

  • @tamerlano236 I dunno, my favourite is this version. While both have a wonderfully delicate voice, I feel Chance's voice is much fuller, which i think is important for Bach Arias. But of course it is just a matter of taste!

  • both are magnificent!

    :)

  • Heard this in Carlos Reygadas' "Japón"

  • i cried a little ...

  • Beautiful. No other words. Ofcourse, Michael is the star (as always) but listen to the very, very good violin solo though!

  • A lovely performance! Thank you!

  • Michael Chance's voice is light and heavenly, he makes it seem so simple.

  • Is there any sound more delightful that that of a countertenor singing within a soprano's range with the ease of a baritone in his?

  • @Newscholar *Within the range of an alto.

  • @64ftContraBombarde Good point, this is the case here. but I have heard some countertenors succeed in singing beyond the usual range of a contralto, and it is a wonderful sound.

  • @Newscholar Oh yes I'm not disputing this. I sing baritone and can hit the F above high C in my head voice. Any man can do it. The art of singing countertenor is about maturing and training the head voice and, ultimately singing music written in the alto range. My cathedral choir has male countertenors (not uncommon) which read the Alto line in an SATB setup, which is always the case.

  • @Newscholar It's actually really disturbing to see/hear a man sing like this.

  • In fact this is 'the piece of music'!!

  • this is just a stunning, beautiful, emotive, gorgeous piece of music!!!! I was introduced to the Matthew Passion only a few years and I had the privilege of seeing this at Glyndebourne only to be completely mesmerised!!! I could listen to over and over again!!! Bach you are such a clever man! love it, love it, love it!

  • The opening is just like Bach's Cantata 82, ich habe genug. Both are very beautiful. Loved it.

  • @brandoboe I had noticed that too. Also a duet from BWV 140 has a similar opening.

  • unreal beauty. utter perfection. RB OBE

  • I can't believe there are 32 people that gave this performance "thumbs down". This music is SUBLIME!

  • What a nice reunion for Mr. Chance. Back to King's Cambridge to sing again, with the King's choir singing as well!

  • Brilliant version. Try also Adreas Schöll version or Damien Guillon conducted by Philippe Herreweghe.

Definetely this is a countenor piece.

  • simply wonderful!!!!!

  • all comments about classical music on here turn into debates on religion / God / no God

  • Me epata tanta belleza.

  • Since I first heard this piece nothing ever came as close to perfection.

Nothing compares to this. Moves me to tears every time I hear it and keeps pushing my mouse to hear it once more.. and again.. and again..

    Bravo.

  • One of Bach's best pieces, and unequivocally the best performance of it on youtube!

  • Quite frankly the best version of this on Youtube. Such empathy for the sinner in all of us. Who said that Bach wrote music without emotion? Moves me to tears every time I hear this.

  • Beautiful.

The first time I heard this masterpiece I was captured, and it hasn't let me go since.

  • Fantastic!!!!!!

  • Very touching. Bach never repeats himself and has limitless power of musical expressivity.

  • When it needs believe in God to make this sort of music, why not.

Never heard music like this made by Atheists.

  • @gyes99

I think that's because in time of Bach it was a crime to be an atheist. ;-)

  • Mr Kwak, in case you want to discuss seriously, please indicate.

Otherwise, atheists do not praise god, hence they do not make music like this.
