@Nadeshda05 : Michael Chance is a counter-tenor. That's what the high voice is called. I've heard him sing live - the recording doesn't do him justice! His actual voice is fuller, warmer. Amazing.

@AYEcorolla I think that might be a baroque violin bow, which is different from a conventional bow in that it actually curves away from the bow hair. Baroque players often use these, along with period correct insturments.
But you are right that a conventional bow should not look like that.

@serenaluce haha it's what i'm thinking about when i'm listening to Chance : it's too good to be true! it seems that we agree on one thing anyway : men are better than woman for this song, aren't they ?
@BlindMegara I can understand you perfectly that you say it as Michael Chance is great! One of my favourites. But Spanos is my favourite number one:-). But I fully agree with you here. CTs are much better for this aria and Sacred music at all than women as such pieces should sound heavenly and sublime which can take you to a better world, and there's such a magic only in high male voices and not in female. Women can sound beautiful but with their singing I stay in this world... Sorry.
@BlindMegara Actually, tastes differ. It's wonderful that we have many great interpretations and can choose which is closer to each of us. For me it's Spanos who reaches this perfection. It's just too good to be true! His version is just so special and unusual! But there are great versions which come close and I appreciate all of them: Daniel Taylor (unfortunately, only on my CD and not on YT), Chance and Scholl's. I know that Kowalski sings it too, but I've never heard it. Must be great too...
Meaning that he´s got the right color of voice for this Bach. Now humbly, then exalted, almost arrogantly demanding at times and desparate. The pain like a delicate veil that tears off softly, hopelessly. The heart expands, then sinks forever. Haunting voice for years to come.
I´m so grateful for this incredibly, delicately dramatic rendition of the Aria. Mr. Chance is able to command vocal technique and make it seem effortless or completely spontaneous. Still a male voice being recognizable in him (again: thank you), it goes beyond, toward trascendence, he keeps reaching further, further away to convey the meaning of the words: Have Mercy.

@CONTRALTUS Hey, who are you? You must be a new fan of Serena ha? I like your point of view. Maybe we should become friends and fight for the true art and true baroque. LOL
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ungiornodiregno You should be grateful to me as you've been on YT for 3 months already and couldn't find a SINGLE friend. But now, only because of ME, of the last several days you already found 2 - kulturist and CONTRALTUS! Isn't it great?! LOL I'm really a very IMPORTANT PERSON IN YOUR LIFE! LOL You 3 even can fight together against all countertenors, not only against PJ if it makes feel you better! LOL No, I can give you an idea for free. Better fight for the TRUE MARKET than TRUE ART! LOL
@serenaluce Oh yes, you should just have a better look on my channel which whom I befriended with. But who cares how many. I choose my friends and don't have to be friends with 100 of people like you only for show. I don't fight against countertenors. I like the singing of a lot of them. But as I see you are not able to read comments properly, answering you makes no sense at all. Just go on with your coffe talk about the bad behaviour and stupid opinions about others. Lol
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ungiornodiregno Jealosy is a bad thing! But you are wrong. I actually have more than 100 friends on YT. If I can't read your comments properly you really can't COUNT my friends on my channel properly to SHOW OFF and to prove me stupid! LOL Really, you have no more arguments, so replying to me makes NO SENSE AT ALL! LOL Go drink something stronger like whiskey and continue your "asshole", "toenail care" and "hemorroids" talk with your dear NEW friends like kulturist! Enjoy such BEHAVIOUR! LOL
@serenaluce Dear, I meant I do not have to be friends with 100s of people. You have 132 friends, wow, yes I am totally jealous. What arguments do you have? Talking about friends on youtube? Yes this makes no sense at all. By the way his name is kulturistimarsch not kulturist. So you really need help with reading.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ungiornodiregno Oh sorry I called your dear friend "kulturistimarsch" kulturist! It really proves how stupid I am! Can't even copy it in the comment! LOL Dear, it's YOU who wanted to become friends with CONTRALTUS to fight for true art! It's YOU who mentioned friends first! Bye the way, just mentioning other channels on your channel isnt' a sign of being real friends with their owners. It's just an option that you like them and you can type there up to 16 channels. Take help to spell coffee!LOL
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@serenaluce Ah here you spelled coffee right. Thanks for the advice. I guess you need some glasses. But thanks for always visiting my channel. You find great music there if you open your eyes.
@ungiornodiregno You see, we have clarified all the points now. But I don't need glasses:-). Thanks for visiting my channel too. You can find great music there too. You see, actually we have much in common! Why don't we become friends too?! LOL In any case, why waste our time arguing about something irrelevent?! Happy listening to you with the stuff you like and to me with the stuff I like! Have a nice day! I still prefer civilized exchange of opinions even in a heated discussion, not oscenities
@CONTRALTUS I was just kiddin', because I do not believe there exists true art or a true way of interpreting baroque music. I like Chance in general because of the beautiful nuances of his vocal tone. But here I do not like the straight producing of tones. Many who perform baroque are doing this and I don't understand why it is not possible to bring vibrato in the performance. You may listen to his Mozart arias. These are very beautiful sung!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@CONTRALTUS Honey, you just opened your YT account today. Congratulations! I know, you are too agitated now as you can finally write whatever you like and see it posted right away for the whole world! I understand that it's a new experience for you. But later you'll calm down and won't be that excited all the time. Believe me! Of course, that I can't stand Bartoli's ugly singing isn't a secret which you can read only in my mind as I commented it on YT LOL Please YOU say something final! LOL
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@kulturistimarsch not nice. Why don't you find something you like and make favorable comments about that instead of sprerading your prejudice and hatred around?
@arpeggio1358 I fully agree with you. That kulturistmarsch doesn't even know for himself what he feels listening to countertenors but already is not shy to post obscene comments about them. Really, nobody pushes him to like them. Why not listen to what he likes instead like his beloved Genaux and Pavarotti and be happy?! He must be a masochist then if he listens to what he hates and his agenda on YT is just bashing ALL CTs without judging who is great like Chance or Spanos and who is bad like PJ
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@arpeggio1358@serenaluce You know I don't agree on the whole subject with kulturistimarsch, as I see Chance as a great countertenor, but on the other hand I don't like this particular rendition. But why don't you take your own advice and just stop listening to Jaroussky for example if you do not like him or Bartoli. Your polemic comments about them are not more or less appropriate than kulturistimarsch's rough wording. Everybody has the same rights to express what he thinks.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ungiornodiregno Oh, please, don't pretend that you are such an innocent person who DISAGREES with it .Let me remind your correspondence with kulturist on Stigniani's Che puro ciel. " So we meet again.I could imagine that here you write your sick opinion. This are the stupidest comments on youtube. You were excited about my profile picture. It is an ass with ears which can hear well. The hole is missing!Because the hole are You!" And YOUR reply:"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@serenaluce I disagree with him what he thinks about Chance. According to you, you did not prove me wrong for instance, irony and sarcasm is not well known by you.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ungiornodiregno Oh yes, it's again about ME. You two are just obsessed with ME. Bye the way, some other people on the contrary say that I use TOO MUCH irony and sarcasm. So, you see, different people think in a different way. You are NOT the absolutel truth even describing ME! LOL Dear, you still refuse to understand that harsh criticism and writing OBSCENITIES about artists like having "hemorroids on his vocal cords" or "he looks like a squrrel freshly fucked" ISN'T THE SAME! YOU get over it!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@serenaluce No, I am not the absolut truth, you are not also. You started to get personal and talked about behaviour and I just answered you. But don't worry you are not so important that people talk all the time about you. But kulturistimarsch must be very important for you as you follow him and have that little coffe party. If you get provoked that easy, you may stay away from youtube. LOL
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ungiornodiregno Buddy, Michael Chance is one of my favourite countertenors. I like this video very much even if it's not his best recording ever. I commented it long before any kulturist and YOU even showed up in the picture! And often listen to this video INDEPENTLY from both of you! I must be so IMPORTANT for BOTH OF YOU if YOU follow me everywhere and even know what I think not only about PJ but Bartoli as well. If you can't sleep well because of my comments YOU should stay away from YT! LOL
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ungiornodiregno Also, think a bit. As you say: "Everybody has the same rights to express what he thinks". To express one's opinion no matter positive or negative in a civilized way is OK. It's the BEAUTY of YT to discuss different stuff. If everybody thought the same it would be very boring. But DECENT people only comment on what an artist does ON STAGE and those with brains can express what exactly they don't like to support their point of view. You compare my "polemic" with such obscenities?!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@serenaluce If someone says he sounds like he has piles on his vocal cords is the same as you say Jaroussky sounds like a sexless creature or Bartoli has monkey manners and comes out of the Zoo. You should just think a bit not to contradict yourself so much. Just get over it!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@kulturistimarsch This is a bit rough. I don't think this is his best. I don't like this "straight" singing here at all. But he is in general a very fine countertenor.
IF Bach et al had been allowed to use women in public performances of church pieces such as this, I wonder if he would have done so?
We'll never know.
I'm just pleased contraltos are now free to perform publicly. And BOY do they get a lot of work. I've been looking for one for the ensemble - guess what - they're all booked.
@minasgekos What for? Michael Chance is a countertenor. He sings like that just because it's such a technique and not a defect. And he is one of the greatest countertenors ever! His version is just stunning, even though I personally also prefer Nicholas Spanos's interpretation...
@TZAVELENA Why come on? Is it supposed to be negative? I also think that it's an eternal piece of music and that Spanos's version is the best and just other worldly though I like Chance's rendition very much too and find it otherworldly too. I prefer it to Scholl's. Tastes differ. Why not discuss our preferences and explain what exactly we like more in a certain rendition? It's the beauty of YT! There's another great version on YT - Guillon's! What is your favourite version?
@tamerlano236 I dunno, my favourite is this version. While both have a wonderfully delicate voice, I feel Chance's voice is much fuller, which i think is important for Bach Arias. But of course it is just a matter of taste!
@64ftContraBombarde Good point, this is the case here. but I have heard some countertenors succeed in singing beyond the usual range of a contralto, and it is a wonderful sound.
@Newscholar Oh yes I'm not disputing this. I sing baritone and can hit the F above high C in my head voice. Any man can do it. The art of singing countertenor is about maturing and training the head voice and, ultimately singing music written in the alto range. My cathedral choir has male countertenors (not uncommon) which read the Alto line in an SATB setup, which is always the case.
this is just a stunning, beautiful, emotive, gorgeous piece of music!!!! I was introduced to the Matthew Passion only a few years and I had the privilege of seeing this at Glyndebourne only to be completely mesmerised!!! I could listen to over and over again!!! Bach you are such a clever man! love it, love it, love it!
Quite frankly the best version of this on Youtube. Such empathy for the sinner in all of us. Who said that Bach wrote music without emotion? Moves me to tears every time I hear this.
I think this is one of the best versions of this piece on the youtubez.

Haunting voice for years to come.
nestordgr 1 year ago
I´m so grateful for this incredibly, delicately dramatic rendition of the Aria. Mr. Chance is able to command vocal technique and make it seem effortless or completely spontaneous. Still a male voice being recognizable in him (again: thank you), it goes beyond, toward trascendence, he keeps reaching further, further away to convey the meaning of the words: Have Mercy.

Lol

@ungiornodiregno Jealosy is a bad thing! But you are wrong. I actually have more than 100 friends on YT. LOL Really, you have no more arguments, so replying to me makes NO SENSE AT ALL!

But why don't you take your own advice and just stop listening to Jaroussky for example if you do not like him or Bartoli.

@serenaluce If someone says he sounds like he has piles on his vocal cords is the same as you say Jaroussky sounds like a sexless creature or Bartoli has monkey manners and comes out of the Zoo. You should just think a bit not to contradict yourself so much. Just get over it!

What is your favourite version?
serenaluce 1 year ago
@tamerlano236 I dunno, my favourite is this version. While both have a wonderfully delicate voice, I feel Chance's voice is much fuller, which i think is important for Bach Arias. But of course it is just a matter of taste!

Is there any sound more delightful that that of a countertenor singing within a soprano's range with the ease of a baritone in his?
Newscholar 1 year ago
@Newscholar *Within the range of an alto.
64ftContraBombarde 1 year ago
@64ftContraBombarde Good point, this is the case here. but I have heard some countertenors succeed in singing beyond the usual range of a contralto, and it is a wonderful sound.
Newscholar 1 year ago
@Newscholar Oh yes I'm not disputing this. I sing baritone and can hit the F above high C in my head voice. Any man can do it. The art of singing countertenor is about maturing and training the head voice and, ultimately singing music written in the alto range. My cathedral choir has male countertenors (not uncommon) which read the Alto line in an SATB setup, which is always the case.
