In VI, he gets ressurected inadvertantly by cheesy circumstances involving lightning, giving birth to the "Zombie Jason" that has super strength (snapping folks in half, etc).

Theory 1: Jason survived the drowning and his mother kept killing as revenge for her son almost drowning and when she got killed, jason started killing as revenge for her death. He actually becomes immortal only in part 6 when he is revived by a bolt of lighting. Theory 2 is that Jason's mother revived him using dark magic (as evidenced by the necromicon in jason goes to hell).
