@ChuckSFP My chihuahua was raised since birth around other dogs, cats and people. While we worked hard to get her to be as social as possible, she is still very much just social to me and my family and our one other dog. She will tolerate other dogs that we foster but only really likes them if they are more her size. She won't bite other people, but is very reluctant to go near them most times.
I'm 11, my sisters 8, and my brothers 14 so our chihuahua does fine with us. He actually was my sisters dog when she was 5, a year passed i hated him so much because he was always her dog and he looked so cute but she wouldnt let me touch him. Then we got a labrador and everything changed my sister kicked the chihuahua to the curb and i took him in now hes my boy, and he has bitten my dad once, my brother once, and my mom twice for protectiveness. He doesnt bite my sister usually.

@coolonbb german shepherds are nice dogs, they can be good family dogs if you train them right. I have a belgain shepherd that loves dogs and he is protective and good family pet but they are also a type of breed that you have to constant training with. These dogs you would want to slowly introduce to kids if you rescue one from a shelter with not knowing their behavior and what not. If anything get one as a puppy and train it real well. You dont have to train a dog to be protective.
@hottAFchick its all in the matter of love for the dog to be protective. Labs are good dogs too, ive known labs to be protective, very good family pet and easy to train. I seriously could go on and on. lol If you not too well on training dogs just look for a local dog trainer. and/or you can message me personally im in school to become a dog trainer. : ) i hope this helps.

I have a 2 1\2LB ten yr old beauty named T and she is the most loyal fierce lil chic, We love her so. Three sons and shes our daughter. Shes very mellow uncharacteristically so, unless you threaten her family then its on.
My tiny Oscar is 3 pounds and the most mardiest dog in the world!! He always wants my cuddles an affection and gets jealous if I cuddle my older dog (a Yorkshire terrier) more than him. Lucy is very patient though! (my yorkie)
I have an 8 pound, almost 2 year old Chihuahua-Cocker Spaniel Mix (his mom is half and half) and for the most part he's good and listens. He doesn't take kindly to strangers, but once he's around them enough he warms up. He is ALWAYS wrapped up in his blanket but doesn't seem to mind cool outside weather too much. However, our chihuahuas are probably the quietest dogs ever. They only bark when they hear someone coming up to the house. We bought them because we knew they were intelligent and loyal. If you treat them just like any other dog, they learn to respect you, my Chi Obi Wan NEVER bit any one, I had small children handle him, all my family members, my brothers friends, literally anyone who wanted to hold him, got to. He knew he was MY dog, but he knew better than to bite. If he even tensed up he went in the kennel and who ever he shy'd from took him back out. I NEVER put up up with that crap. (Yes I did dress him up, for warmth)

@maggot6639 Oh I baby'd my Chi all the time, but then I baby my beagles too. Its just, if you're going to treat them like kids, then go all the way with it. You wouldn't let your kids bite someone, nor would you allow them to be aggressive with another child, or someone elses dog. They have to know respect. As for not wanting to be picked up, have you tried treating them when you pick them up? It may be that they associate being picked up with a lack of freedom, rather than love.
If you come to a chihuahua with "I hate chihuahuas" on your mind it will probably tell you dont like it and bite you. (Just saying, that happened to my friend...I think dogs can tell stuff like that)

@JMillz512 what i did is take them around children from a young age so they get used to them because naturally chihuahuas do not like children due to their high energy. my chihuahuas did not like being held by others so i would pick her up and put her in a strangers arms. i then praised her so she can see people are good. also i take her to the dog park on a regular basis so she gets used to other dogs. but just be very careful when taking any dog to the dog park and look for aggresive dogs.
@JMillz512 id say so. as long as you socialize him/her early on to keep from getting that "little man syndrome". they are awesome dogs! i have 2 that are great listeners and great with other dogs and children!

@MsSonamy4ever like they said its best if they are owned by older children. my niece and nephew(one is 6 and they other is about 3) kept holding them the wrong way and stuff. Even with supervision 24/7 they dropped the puppies

Wolf sable chihuaha's are the best looking. Chihuahua's are like any other dog. Do not let them get away with things that you wouldn't let a large dog get away with, eg, aggression towards other people/dogs, disrespect towards furniture and the house, and for goodness sake TRAIN them. Chihuahua's are not nightmares, it is the people who treat them like fluffy toys that get the problem dogs. They are cute, they are small, but they are DOGS.
I have i chihuahua. It is true, they can be really annoying. But females not so much. They are much calmer. But chihuhuas in generale arent dogs that you can not to take care of. Maybe that is why people dont like them. Because they are lazy and chihuahua requieres a lot of attention. Not attention in general, but attention of his owner, because they are really faithful. If you want a pet that wont bother you, buy a cat. I hate how many people buy a dog like toy and then dont take care of him.

I always try to take her everywhere and she got so used to it that she prefers to go with me to the dentist and wait for me like an hour over being locked up at home. And she loves when I carry her. I like most breeds of dogs really like them a lot,except chihuahua... I fkin hate chihuahua they are freakin disgusting n ugly. Almost all the chihuahua I've seen are all so skinny n small n their eyes are so big n ugly. Their so small practically useless when it's comes to self-defense. My favourites are the retrievers n Shepard collies

Not sure why they brought up the whole fox thing when its been proven time and time again that a fox is genetically incompatible with a canine and therefor a chihuahua is in fact descended from wolves....just like any other dog on this planet?

@maggot6639 If you baby them they are. If you treat them just like any other dog, they learn to respect you, my Chi Obi Wan NEVER bit any one, I had small children handle him, all my family members, my brothers friends, literally anyone who wanted to hold him, got to. He knew he was MY dog, but he knew better than to bite. If he even tensed up he went in the kennel and who ever he shy'd from took him back out. I NEVER put up up with that crap. (Yes I did dress him up, for warmth)

@FiestyCat86 lol i know, but i gots 2 Chi's and a German Shepherd, and they know not to bite, but get kinda frisky, my girlfriend babies them a lot, i try to treat them like a big dog (cause thats why they pretty much think they are) and make them good behaved, but well they do hate people who just pick them up when they are resting, but well im trying to get them used to it xD but i love them!

@maggot6639 Oh I baby'd my Chi all the time, but then I baby my beagles too. Its just, if you're going to treat them like kids, then go all the way with it. You wouldn't let your kids bite someone, nor would you allow them to be aggressive with another child, or someone elses dog. They have to know respect. As for not wanting to be picked up, have you tried treating them when you pick them up? It may be that they associate being picked up with a lack of freedom, rather than love.

@JMillz512 what i did is take them around children from a young age so they get used to them because naturally chihuahuas do not like children due to their high energy. my chihuahuas did not like being held by others so i would pick her up and put her in a strangers arms. i then praised her so she can see people are good. also i take her to the dog park on a regular basis so she gets used to other dogs. but just be very careful when taking any dog to the dog park and look for aggresive dogs.

@MsSonamy4ever like they said its best if they are owned by older children. my niece and nephew(one is 6 and they other is about 3) kept holding them the wrong way and stuff. Even with supervision 24/7 they dropped the puppies

Wolf sable chihuaha's are the best looking. Chihuahua's are like any other dog. Do not let them get away with things that you wouldn't let a large dog get away with, eg, aggression towards other people/dogs, disrespect towards furniture and the house, and for goodness sake TRAIN them. Chihuahua's are not nightmares, it is the people who treat them like fluffy toys that get the problem dogs. They are cute, they are small, but they are DOGS.

I have i chihuahua. It is true, they can be really annoying. But females not so much. They are much calmer. But chihuhuas in generale arent dogs that you can not to take care of. Maybe that is why people dont like them. Because they are lazy and chihuahua requieres a lot of attention. Not attention in general, but attention of his owner, because they are really faithful. If you want a pet that wont bother you, buy a cat. I hate how many people buy a dog like toy and then dont take care of him.

I always try to take her everywhere and she got so used to it that she prefers to go with me to the dentist and wait for me like an hour over being locked up at home. And she loves when I carry her. Almost all the chihuahua I've seen are all so skinny n small n their eyes are so big n ugly. Their so small practically useless when it's comes to self-defense.
