The orchestral version is very nice, but IT WAS NOT WRITTEN BY ROSSINI. That is why to me it hardly matters how nice it feels. It was premiered with piano accompaniment, and sung by Marietta Alboni with Rossini accompaning her at piano. One reads about the 1832 and the 1852 versions, but the actual premier was 1959. Neither version was orchestrated. The orchestration was done by Salvatore Sciarrino. While the orchestration is beautiful, Rossini never wrote it.
Thank you for your valuable comment :). I was not aware of the fact that the orchestrated version was quite recently prepared. The Sciarrino orchestration is, indeed, beautiful and sounds as authentically Rossinian as one could be without being Rossini himself :D. Also, after reading your comment, I decided to post the original version as well, complete with an updated description of the work. Once again, thank you for the insight :).
1) You have chosen a painting that I know and love for the visual! It hangs in the MMA in NYC, and is gigantic. Joan has a visage that looks very much like Kate Winslet, and the painting is so realistic, that you actually feel as if she's right there in the painting! Good choice!
2) The Horne CD I have ("Arie Alternative")of this scena is with piano, but I was pretty sure too that Von Otter had done it, again, with piano, but I can't find it online...
2) I'm pretty sure that Vivica Genaux has also done it, but there is no recording at the moment :(! By the way, did you like the present recording? I'd love to hear your thoughts on it :)!
I like hearing the orchestral realisation, but there are some weird sounds coming from Barcellona. Sorry to say it! She was a nice Tancredi in a DVD I have though...
You are right, Genaux performed it. She sung it a few years ago in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. There has been a broadcast on the Dutch television. A wonderful performance! I taped it, but unfortunately I cannot upload it. If you're interested, I am happy to send you a copy. Let me know!
