Hi this may be off topic but i have a lump under my jaw and when i touch it or feel it It moves around. it feels about the size of a grape sliced in half, does this sound cancerous? thank you.
Excellent video. I have been having recurrent stones in the parotid gland which produces blockage and swelling. I had a stone removed on the right side in the submax? one which was an office procedure. Now my Doc wants me to get a CT of the parotid, and is talking parotidectomy. Is this normally done for recurrent stones? I'm nervous b/c of the facial nerve. Thanks in advance for any info.

I'm only 21 years old and as of march of 2010 I was diagnosed with a pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland. After years of misdiagnosis I should say... Recently I had consultation with a head and neck surgeon in Ontario, who estimates the tumor was most likely present for over ten years. It's thought to be benign, but no one will know until a full specimen is examined. God is cruel...
hello, I want to ask something . Hope I will get the needed answer.
Someone in my family, has a paraganglioma tumor " which it is situated on the right part of the neck . He is 52 and he has it since 1992, it has a size of 28x35, and now it is making a problem, in his hand. * it seems it has touched the nerves"
Please, can anyone tell me . What happens if he does the operation ?
Hi doc - quick question ! I have a recurrently swelling parotid gland - may be heading towards surgery if it comes up again. Obviously, due to the facial nerves passing through the gland, this can be somewhat risky. Is there any indications for surgery if a tumour isn't present ? My doctor is, er, well - he didn't know where the partotid duct is....
Thank you very much for a beautiful example of compassionate surgery. This way of putting it in pictures works great to tell the story. Very nice, this even makes me want to become a surgeon. I like the music too.
Kevin, I just wanted to tell me I underwent another parotid procedure at Johns Hopkins on July 25th. This was my sixth surgery. Dr. Gourin used an abdominal fat transfer to cover the defect - all of my original sternomastoid flap is gone now. I feel terrific, and there is hardly any paralysis. Do you use a harmonic (ultrasound) scalpel? This seems to really help as I can feel the difference from previous surgeries. Three tumors were on my facial nerves and yet there is no damage to them.
I've had a total of five surgeries (recurrent pleomorphic adenomas, benign), including a total parotidectomy in 1983. I'm now scheduled for a sixth surgery, which will be performed as if it's a total parotidectomy, with fat grafts from my abdomen to compensate for the dent. I would like to see something about repair of the dent from Dr. Soh. Does he use fat grafts, alloderm, or other facial reconstruction techniques?
Thank God I never had to do so many operations on the same person. Normally I prefer to use a sternomastoid flap which has lots of blood supply to repair the defect. Sometimes we even use a free flap to cover the wound. A free flap needs a microsurgeon to join up the arteries and veins. It is very time consuming but worth the while.
Thank you for the quick reply. I had the sternomastoid flap done in 1983. I had 47 radiation treatments (32 electron/15 photon) last year after my last surgery. My new surgeon at Johns Hopkins (Dr. Christine Gourin)believes under the circumstances the fat grafts would be the best approach. She's had good results and is publishing a paper on the use of a harmonic scalpel to dissect the nerve, and her use of fat grafts. Her photos are fascinating. Expected surgical time, about 5 hours.
Im just operated in the same thing but my tumour was bening. ( It had the same mesure 3 cm ).
Today I completed ten days and I don`t feel good at all.
I feel asleep my ear and part of my face and I close my right eye with difficult. Besides. My mouth makes twisted gestures when I smile and brush my teeths, amongst other. Also I can´t to lift the right eyebrow.
Excellent video. Very informative. I just had a 3 cm pleumorphic adenoma removed from the deep lobe of my right parotid gland. Doing well. Many thanks to the folks who progress this art.
Wow, as someone who's had five parotid tumor surgeries, plus radiation, this was fascinating to me. I had my total parotidectomy in 1983 before they had this facial monitor. Makes me a little squeamish watching it.

Thanks for the video. I am a surgeon in training and this cleared a few doubts. I dont agree that both CT and MRI are warranted, however.

Dr. Kevin, do you routinely place a closed suction drain in your parotidectomies?
