Hear, hear! My first two therapists only threw mind altering drugs at me, trying to make me forget about my problems. They were completely uneducated about transsexualism. One even suggested my parents kick me out of the house because I was too depressed to work. How the fuck would that help me? Fuck them! Fuck them very very muuuch! Great song choice by the way ;D
Great video. This is my first time to comment on a ftm video on YouTube. My son is ftm and on T for over a year now. The biggest problem I have is changing the pronouns. I still slip and say she sometimes. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos.
What you said is so right, I live in the UK and believe me what you spoke about is a worldwide phenomena in the mental health field and it absolutely amazes me that the lack of education especially in psychiatrists, nurses and psychologists is virtually non existent to that fact that they really don't get it and are obnoxious to the point they try to tell you that you are not what you think you are.. how the fuck would they know... Great Video and Top Channel..
This vid made me really happy! :D I agree my psych got too nosy wanting to know things that didn't matter so I dropped him, what was worse is he didn't get the concept of having a transgender patient >.< I'm glad this vid was made because more healthcare professionals need to get educated :)
@VitalyValentine yeah, i'm hoping to lead an inservice for a health center locally soon and i fully intend to brief them on "their business" related appropriate questions.
Oh wait actually that song is fitting after all. xD Anyway another thing is, would they hesitate to treat a diabetic? No, of course not. Would they take you seriously if you were a transgender who was suicidal? Depends on where you live. This sort of reminds me of another significant event in history, that if you were a certain way, you weren't treated to kindly. -_- Well, really that minimalizes Elizer Weisel's experience, i'm just saying that it's slightly relevant to that point in time.
Haha the random music in the backround is so unfitting to the mood of the conversation lol. How can anyone just blatently say that we don't exsist? I came across a person like that once, and I wanted so badly to say, "Um, hello? I'm standing right here in front of you!" Gosh, in a sence we're a lot like ghosts. At least that's the way I see it. It's a strange feeling. Oh well, hey maybe if they don't know we're here they won't make fun of us! That is, in a way, the positive way of taking this.
LOVE IT!!! Awesome Jamie!! True story though, my PCP has no idea what issues they may be with me, neither do surgeons who do minimal surgery, and I had to go through 14 Therapists in the LGBT (so they advertised) field to find one that understands Trans-Gendered people.
I think they spend so much time learning before they get to practice, that once they practice, they want every case to be similar, so that they do not have to go outside their comfort zone...How SAD ... :(
Great video! As an intersexual, I have not had to deal with the psychologists and get a letter, but I have had to deal with Urologists. I have never met even one American Urologist who could effectively deal with me. The two I have found that are effective were both born, raised, and received their medical educations in a foreign country. One in Egypt and one in Cuba. Both far from the poison put out in American medical schools.
I don't like this video I LOVE this video!! I had a similar experience when I initially went to see my "primary physician" when I decided to transition. He basically said he couldn't do anything for me...more like he didn't WANT TO. Needless to say I have not gone back and switched from an HMO to a PPO so I wouldn't have to ever see him again. No one should have to spend more on health insurance just to get educated health care professionals!!
Dude I totally agree. I live in Northern Ontario in Canada and I've asked plenty of doctors to assist me through transition with hormones and such and they ALL just say 'Oh, I'm not comfortable with that, and wouldn't even know where to begin. You should find a doctor who's more comfortable treating you than I am' and then send me off on my own to keep searching. I definitely feel your frustrations!
I have to start by saying Jamie you look amazing! I've been watching your videos for some time now and you have opened my eyes to so much! Hopefully one day people will realize that gender is so much more then Female/Male, there is a grey area! I have this hope that one day people will be able to just be themselves and not have to worry or explain who they are, after all were all just people right?? You have done a great job educating a lot of us..So thank-you!
@melaniesaysyo good to hear! maybe future generations won't have the devastating experiences modern trans people have when they go to the people meant to help them
ive got a question how come when women transition they get all male id mind set i mean they get really offended? i think transphobia stems from the lesbian community because we as a people have tried to get so much respct a to beng a butch or dyke but then we have our stone butches male id themselves i just dont get it because youre still a woman. you just modified your reproductive organs. just saying i dont see whats wrong with still calling trans ''men'' she same goes for trans ''women''.
@lilkush909 a butch lesbian or "stone butch" is not the same as a transman. a butchie or stone (or femme lesbian) is a woman. they were born in female bodies, & they have female brains. transmen were born in female bodies but they aren't women. some transmen are attracted to women, but not all of them are- some gay men are born in female bodies.
i haven't done anything to my reproductive organs, and i don't have to. i've started HRT, but it wasn't requisite. my male identity IS, regardless.
@lilkush909 it's an admittedly confusing concept for someone who doesn't personally deal with it. even 2 years ago, i would've thought butch lesbians were "just women who 'wished' they were men" -- i didn't know that a masculine woman who is attracted to other women could simply be a lesbian. i never identified as a woman/lesbian, but it's because i dind't know "transgender" was a category i could fit.
I am looking for new doctor and that is one of my concerns is how the doc will respond to me. Right now I think I still look very much like a 'butch lesbian" even though been on T since 11/10. The shrink I see specializes in Transgender though I think he is a bit of a flake but as long as it gets me my letters when I need them that is all I really worry about. BTW looking great and keep up the great vids
Hrm. Well i'm a psychology major and we've talked about transgender in majority of my classes. All my teachers understand and are more than okay with it?
Loved this video and all your productions. Good use of this medium. I'm glad you express what you've experienced and seen whether or not it may be perceived as offensive within elements in the LGBTIQ communities. Glad you and your kind exist.
preach it!! my first therapist ask me all bout my shit and tried talking me out of it sayin my junks gonna look all wrong and everyhitng! and thats its not acceptable and wrong
Is there are news article that you read that made you make this video or was it personal experience? I was just wondering because I wanted to get the right info so I can tell some bigot what's what. lol Nice video and nicely put btw. Doctors should be taught about it or learn more about it because it is real and it is not something you choose.
@HappyAtheist76 Combination: Trans friend's current experience with his therapist + personal friend/school counselor's comments + personal experience with "christian therapists" + bill proposed in Texas currently to change the 2009 court ruling allowing transgender people to marry.
@sneetchinflux Ah I see. Thanks. Yeah the guy was tring to say that trans people are "broken people" and that the doctors want to give trans people quote "Frankenstein flaps". He is seriously under educated on the subject and is still willfully ignorant, and standing by his position I might add, even though people are trying to tell him otherwise. It's serious stuff.
