I have a question about the auto mode. is it always on? or can you turn it off as well? because with moving objects the auto mode creates this "pumping-effect", does'nt it? so is it possible to film without the auto focus mode? thanks for your help, i am about to buy one, but filming is very interesting for me, so i have to know this first. thank you!
Manual focusing is quite simple. Turning your lens's focus ring will override the autofocus or if you switch your lens from AF to MF you will be able to focus manually throughout the video.
if you think canon slr video looks better than nikon you just don't know what you're looking at. the nikon has a slightly more fillmlike look than the canon(not to mention better lenses for the money, though you could use an adapter ring i guess). it's only a slight difference, but it's enough that i would not get a canon. now that the new nikons have manual controls, they are the best. though i wish they could shoot 60fps slow-mo like the canon, the nikon still wins in pure visual quality.

@Jib0n Depends. Do you want it more for video or photo? If you want it for both and will use video often definitely get a d5100. If you want it for pictures get the d90. The d90 has more controls and is probably a better camera overall but the d5100 has more mega pixels, WAY BETTER VIDEO, d90 video has a mad rolling shutter and is only 720p 24fps. So d5100 would be the best choice as it's also cheaper. A d90 on craigslist or ebay is stil like $500+ for the body.
@redriotxltd Haha I currently have a D90 and I love it and I think I'll stick to it even though all these new gears are nice, but they're only tools people have to make pictures have meaning. The camera can only help you in creating that art. :D
@VxXsamuraiXxV i have a d90 too. it's the shit. i don't think im gonna get one of these new ones, even though i mainly use my camera for filmmaking. i will probably continue to use my d90 until i can get a really expensive, cinema quality hd camera like the NEXCAM from sony.

D90 is cheaper and has the top LCD which I use more than love view if ur buying a video camera buy a Sony bg 1 or a canon 60d
