  • Thanks, I think I can do this. Very easy to follow your instruction.

  • This is a great video. Thank you for sharing your expertise. Keep posting videos. :)

  • I love it!!

  • Soo I'm new to knitting & i've been trying to do this for like an hour, I can get it started but for some reason I'll have an extra stitch come out of nowhere , help ?

  • I like the knitting but i hate your nailpolish

  • Rosie O'Donnell?

  • I can't wait to learn this ... This is awesome... Thx :)

  • I figured out what I was doing wrong...totally not moving the yarn. Thanks!

  • Hey, I'm Michelle.. Blah blah blah mormom mormon.

  • @kellylynndilger shut up. at least she has a useful skill to teach.

  • Thanks! I totally didn't understand what you were trying to explain -,- but on a brighter note... I just found the solution to my problem :) thanks though!

  • Some one please respond... When she switches from knit to purl.... Is she adding another loop or something?

  • @ofmiceandmen2010 ......... say u need 10 stitches when she says purl its the same as knitting just knit it the other way ... so 5 regular stitch then 5 purl stitch .. that was just an example:) did u get that

  • For this technique can you use any size needles?

  • ooo i love this video thank u for the idea for my second scarf

  • My squares are not popping out like yours, what am I doing wrong? I'm doing a 4-4 and followed what you said. Could it be the yarn I'm using?? Please help!

  • @injuryadventuresSnj I think you're right. I used a thicker yarn and it was barley visible, So i would probably get something like hers

  • what yarn are you using? Brand, and dye lot please! purple is my favorite color and that purple shines just so! I need it! LOL

  • I've never knitted before and thought it was too confusing but this is said amazingly well and i understand it completely i may just take up knitting now.. this is a beautiful pattern and very simple i love it!

  • I commend you on how clear this video is... Nice & slow & you hold your hands still so viewers can actually see properly & understand what you are doing... Well done!

  • That is a very nice stitch pattern. Thanks for showing us this.

  • My squares doesnt pop up.. can u help >~<

  • Thanks for this, I'm just about to knit my third scarf and I think this would be a very nice stitch to use.

  • now, if someone tells me 17-year-old metalhead can't knit a scarf, I am totally going to prove them wrong ;)

  • @shelteringshade That's exactly what I am!!

  • @shelteringshade u go! i knitted when i was 12 so go! am on ur side

  • @tinamarie19752008 when I was a kid in Scotland we were taught to knit in school. That was the ONE thing I could never seem to do: 'switch' the yarn. My knitting always ended up a jumbled mess. As I got a bit older it somehow dawned on me just what I'd been doing wrong, and I began making clothes for my dolls. Now (much later on), I'm pretty much an intermediate knitter who can tackle just about any pattern, even cables. Learn the shape of the stitches: The v for knit, small 'bobble' for purl.

  • Hi: Love this tutorial and basketweave, especially for beginners. My only quibble is that whomever did the printing really needs to change 'pearl' to purl, because it's going to cause much confusion for new knitters since the same terms are used throughout the knitting world and if they learn the wrong term early on, they'll never recognize the proper word in patterns. You also say 'what this will yield us' and the onscreen uses 'lead' instead. Basketweave is a great reversible pattern. :)

  • Hi.I'm from Serbia.21 y.old. I wonder, there is a slight difference in knitting here than what i usually see on youtube. Actually, most of us knit while holding excess of yarn on the left index finger. it goes really fast, unlike putting yarn between needles. At last, does it make a difference in the final product? Or is it just a different habit?

    Thanks for video posting :D

  • @JunsuiGackt Different habit ~~~ no difference in the final product. :)

  • @lisalumi Thanks.i though if i switch to right index finger ,it might look more neat :D

  • @JunsuiGackt I think the neatness comes from consistent tension. Some people find this consistency easier to obtain with the the method demonstrated on this video. I believe the method this woman uses is called "throwing". You can probably find a video demonstrating it. The "european" method is called "picking", I believe. "Picking" might be faster and the best method for some knitters but use whichever gives you the most satisfying outcome :-)

  • Thanks for the great example! You should note that your nail polish is very distracting. You should have a plain look to your nails, after all this video is about knitting not nail polish. That people are commenting on your nail polish proves my point.

  • @EReader2010 If you're finding her nail polish 'distracting' from the knitting, then you're not interested in knitting, lol. I just watched the whole video and couldn't tell you what was on her nails since I was focused on the pattern and the colour of the yarn, her style of knitting, the matching writing, etc. Let's not get silly. Someone commenting on liking her nail polish is purely a nice thing to do.

  • I love it... thanks.

  • Sweet!nI am a super beginner, so I guess I gotta look up purl stitches, i didn't know there was a difference hehehe

  • This is so neat and looks really good on many different projects! Thanks!

  • thanks for showing me more ways to knit could you show me how to change color and purl two together again thanks alot

  • wow this is so good and u're so good teacher...

  • it is much easyer

  • i'm sure someone has already asked this but what size needles are those?

I literally know NOTHING about knitting. I want to knit a scarf for my boyfriend but I'm lost on where to start.

  • @PineappleSlapper when u buy the yarn, it will tell you on the package :) i usually go 0.5 -1 size smaller though- hope that help

  • As a knitting beginner, I decided to make this gorgeous scarf as my first project.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • I tried doing that yesterday, but my scarf really doesn't get that effect... Does it have to do with the yarn maybe?? =(

  • Very pretty!

  • GNITTING!!!!!!

  • how many do u cast on

  • lulu19501 .how many do u cast on to do the basket weave im learning this

  • @lulu19501 as many as u want but it has to be a multiple of 4 or 5 eg im doing 36 which is a multiple of 4

  • will the basket weave work on a chunky knit scarf?

  • @itsssannie are u insane crochet is way harder then knitting lol

  • Great video! I appreciate how simple & clear it is to follow; this is a lovely pattern and I can't wait to try it.

  • Seriously get the damn words off the screen! They are taking up the WHOLE screen we can't view the video! ExpertVillage? Don't you have an expert that can upload a viewable video? lol

  • @TheSilentPrincess You can click on the one button that says cc on the screen and can make the words appear or dissappear. I hope that helped! Now you can watch the vid with out the words ;)

  • @TiffanyFlorence OMG ty! This is just annoying that they do this, it blocks the whole dang screen .__.

  • Would love to see it but I can't with all the typed words on the screen.

  • @mtsugarcookie You can click on the one button that says cc on the screen and can make the words appear or dissappear. I hope that helped! Now you can watch the vid with out the words ;)

  • Weird way how to knit... seems too difficult when compared to europian way.

  • Weird way how to knit... seems to difficult when compared to europian way.

  • After seeing a scarf in a craft shop with the basket weave effect, i decided to give it a go from memory and work it out myself, but between each type of stitch; going from knit to pearl ect, i keep getting holes, like i have lost stitches and i cant seem to understand why, as from watching your video, i do have the way of doing it correct. Please...what am i doing wrong?

  • After seeing the basket knit on a scarf in a craft shop, i had a go from memory, asto how to do it, but due to keep getting loose holes in between each type of knit;going from knit to pearl, i mean i decided to watch your video to see what i must be doing wrong and yet i found i was doing it write, so why am i getting these holes? I keep pulling the wool tighter with each change, but that cant be right.

  • Humm where is the next one. I can't find it in this Youtupe. Did you upload it yet ??

  • looks vary informative but you did'nt show how to even start kniting the scarf in the first place....... i'm not a full on begginer, i can make necklesses and stuff... but i dont get this at all.

  • Thank you, Michelle. I love you.

  • yes!finally,a tutorial i can understand!!!!! thanks sooooo much!!!!!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been watching videos out the ying yang and could not for the life of me figure out why I kept increasing stitches, especially on the purl rows. Your comment about "You MUST bring the yarn to the back to knit (or front to purl)" has saved me. I had to stop and start the video a few times before it clicked but thank god it did cause I was going bonkers over here. Good on ya!!!

  • why are you guys making it so difficult to knit?

  • I've watched several of your tutorials. You're a really great teacher - everything is perfectly clear. Thank you so much :-)

  • She was saying "it looks like..."

and i was thinking "A CHESSBOARD"

    then she said.."a basket."

Clearly we all see things differently lol *Might make a chessboard actually...hmmm*

  • thank you, i am going to use it to make a child sweater. thanks again

  • wow i llove this pattern!!

its so beautiful im so going to use it.

    THANKS!!!!

  • really cute!! i'm gonna go do one for myself!!! ^____^ thank you for sharing!!!

  • If I do this pattern for a scarf, will the sides curl?

  • @JulianneBryson Not to speak of, because the knit (garter) stitch alternating squares with the stockinette hold it straight. What I have found is that it's not the exact same on both sides, plus the resulting knit fabric is a bit on the thin side for a scarf. That may be what you want, however.

  • this isnt basket weave this is a cheackered stitch

  • cool I definitely want to try this, thanks :)

  • Wonderful instructions; great for a beginning knitter like me! I'm going to have to go and try this now..Thanks

  • my gf loves this video, it helped her a lot

  • thanks

    awesome pattern

  • can you to this on a any looms?

  • wow, that looks great! i think im going to use it on my first scarf! thanx

  • Thank you! Going to try this soon!

  • ohh! cool! ill try that next time!!!! Thank YOU!!!!!!

  • OMGosh!! Thank you soooo much for your nice SLOW paced video a beginner can understand!! I couldn't figure out how to knit & purl side by side without having an "X" across the top of my needles, but you showed me how to correct that!! YAY!!!!

  • I`m going to try this by knitting my first scarf.......hope it works out~~~

  • Thanks for this video. By the way nice nails.

    Happy Knitting,tr1shapumk1n

  • Nice work, and excellent tutorial video. Regards from Ecuador

  • Thanks for posting this tutorial it is awesome!! I'm knitting a baby block for my nephew that's due in November. I was looking for some way to add different textures to it and wasn't sure how to go about it. You have saved me days (and possibly weeks) of searching!! :)

  • nice nails

  • Oh wow, this video is fantastic, thanks for putting it on here!!

  • Thanks Michele!!! This really helped, but I'm still a little confused. When you start one row on knit, then the next row starts on purl? Or is that too simple?

  • You will knit for rows in the same pattern.. Knit 4, purl 4. After do four rows, you switch and start with purl. After fours of starting with purl, you go back to starting iwth knit. Does that make sense? Four rows of the same, and then switch. :)

  • how many stickes must be cast on to start doing the scarf and do the rest

  • Comment removed

  • I don't get why you pepole let go of the yarn. it's mutch easyer with the styel that we do as an exampel in sweden...

  • I tried to learn how to do it that way (I'm a self-taught knitter), but could never really get it to work right. I'd still like to learn, though...

  • If I watch this a few more times, I might get what you are doing. Cool effect anyway

  • thanks!that really helped

  • Thank you for this instructional video. I'm a new knitter and I can't believe that I'm actually making the patterns I always wanted to do. (I first learned how to knit as a little girl.) I always wanted to progress to making actual pieces, and with videos like these on YouTube, I'm well on my way!!! Thanks again!

  • How many did u cast on for this scarf?

  • That help so much thankz!

  • I don't get it. You said you were going to knit four/purl four for four rows then switch, then after you k404 for the first four rows you start knitting instead of purling. What am I missing?

  • I meant k4p4. oops

  • It's to do with the 2 sides of the work.

For this pattern, you would do k4p4 on the right side (for instance, every odd row) and p4k4 on the wrong side (every even row) so it would be:

    Row 1 k4p4 etc, Row 2 p4k4 etc, Row3 as Row 1 and Row 4 as Row 2.

Then on the next 4 rows, you would do it the other way around, so Row 5 p4k4, Row6 k4p4, Row 7 as Row 5 and Row 8 as Row 6.

    does that make sense?

  • but you start row 5 knitting, that is why I am confused. You say normally I would purl but I am going to knit at about 1:29.

  • I see why you're confused, I'm not sure that she's explained it very well.

Earlier on, when she's explaining, she says that she'll start the 1st section with k4, then in the next section she'll switch it by starting with p4. Following this point, she'd then have to switch back to k4 on row 9, which I think is what she's doing at 1:29.

It might make more sense when you actually do it, I find that I learn better that way. Have a go at the example I used above and let me know how you get on! :)

  • thanks for the video. I've seen almost all the ones u've posted and they're all very clear and you do a great job. can u make me a scarf?? lol

  • Hi there. I'm a beginner in knitting and absolutely love the checker pattern! A new scarf project for me, cool. Thanks!

  • I'm a beginner. I don't know any of them. Purl, Knit, you should explain how to do that!

  • there's lots of other videos on youtube to teach you how to do that =)

this video is just assuming you've already learned knitting and purling

  • That is really cool

    Thanks a lot.

  • thanx

  • ooooh! That's a cute scarf!

Love your choices of nail polish as well.

  • pretty cool! thanks!

  • Thanks! thats so cool!luv it!

  • pretty cool and easy! thanx!

  • very cool pattern! it would have been useful to mention that the number of stitches to cast on should be a multiple of four.

  • she did.

  • do you know how to mack a sock?

  • not very clear. you should start from the beginning and very stitch....confussing.

  • u did it wrong!!

  • ummm it would be better if you showed us from the beginning

  • is casting off 50 stitches too much? lol i like big scarfs

  • Way too much if you are using normal yarn. I use about 24-26 if using funfur, but if you are not, normally 12-16 is good. You probably would want to cast 16 or more for a thicker scarf.

  • So, it's k4, p4, for 4 rows, then p4 k4 the net 4 rows?

  • stop ur confusing me. damn i was just gonna count up to 4....and then... argh* - replay video!!!

  • How many stitches do you start with for a scraf?

  • I usually use the really fat needles and the really fat yarn. with both of those I usually cast on, 10 stiches
