Soo I'm new to knitting & i've been trying to do this for like an hour, I can get it started but for some reason I'll have an extra stitch come out of nowhere , help ?
Thanks! I totally didn't understand what you were trying to explain -,- but on a brighter note... I just found the solution to my problem :) thanks though!
@ofmiceandmen2010 ......... say u need 10 stitches when she says purl its the same as knitting just knit it the other way ... so 5 regular stitch then 5 purl stitch .. that was just an example:) did u get that
My squares are not popping out like yours, what am I doing wrong? I'm doing a 4-4 and followed what you said. Could it be the yarn I'm using?? Please help!
I've never knitted before and thought it was too confusing but this is said amazingly well and i understand it completely i may just take up knitting now.. this is a beautiful pattern and very simple i love it!
I commend you on how clear this video is... Nice & slow & you hold your hands still so viewers can actually see properly & understand what you are doing... Well done!
@tinamarie19752008 when I was a kid in Scotland we were taught to knit in school. That was the ONE thing I could never seem to do: 'switch' the yarn. My knitting always ended up a jumbled mess. As I got a bit older it somehow dawned on me just what I'd been doing wrong, and I began making clothes for my dolls. Now (much later on), I'm pretty much an intermediate knitter who can tackle just about any pattern, even cables. Learn the shape of the stitches: The v for knit, small 'bobble' for purl.
Hi: Love this tutorial and basketweave, especially for beginners. My only quibble is that whomever did the printing really needs to change 'pearl' to purl, because it's going to cause much confusion for new knitters since the same terms are used throughout the knitting world and if they learn the wrong term early on, they'll never recognize the proper word in patterns. You also say 'what this will yield us' and the onscreen uses 'lead' instead. Basketweave is a great reversible pattern. :)
Hi.I'm from Serbia.21 y.old. I wonder, there is a slight difference in knitting here than what i usually see on youtube. Actually, most of us knit while holding excess of yarn on the left index finger. it goes really fast, unlike putting yarn between needles. At last, does it make a difference in the final product? Or is it just a different habit?
@JunsuiGackt I think the neatness comes from consistent tension. Some people find this consistency easier to obtain with the the method demonstrated on this video. I believe the method this woman uses is called "throwing". You can probably find a video demonstrating it. The "european" method is called "picking", I believe. "Picking" might be faster and the best method for some knitters but use whichever gives you the most satisfying outcome :-)
Thanks for the great example! You should note that your nail polish is very distracting. You should have a plain look to your nails, after all this video is about knitting not nail polish. That people are commenting on your nail polish proves my point.
@EReader2010 If you're finding her nail polish 'distracting' from the knitting, then you're not interested in knitting, lol. I just watched the whole video and couldn't tell you what was on her nails since I was focused on the pattern and the colour of the yarn, her style of knitting, the matching writing, etc. Let's not get silly. Someone commenting on liking her nail polish is purely a nice thing to do.

After seeing a scarf in a craft shop with the basket weave effect, i decided to give it a go from memory and work it out myself, but between each type of stitch; going from knit to pearl ect, i keep getting holes, like i have lost stitches and i cant seem to understand why, as from watching your video, i do have the way of doing it correct. Please...what am i doing wrong?
After seeing the basket knit on a scarf in a craft shop, i had a go from memory, asto how to do it, but due to keep getting loose holes in between each type of knit;going from knit to pearl, i mean i decided to watch your video to see what i must be doing wrong and yet i found i was doing it write, so why am i getting these holes? I keep pulling the wool tighter with each change, but that cant be right.
looks vary informative but you did'nt show how to even start kniting the scarf in the first place....... i'm not a full on begginer, i can make necklesses and stuff... but i dont get this at all.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been watching videos out the ying yang and could not for the life of me figure out why I kept increasing stitches, especially on the purl rows. Your comment about "You MUST bring the yarn to the back to knit (or front to purl)" has saved me. I had to stop and start the video a few times before it clicked but thank god it did cause I was going bonkers over here. Good on ya!!!
@JulianneBryson Not to speak of, because the knit (garter) stitch alternating squares with the stockinette hold it straight. What I have found is that it's not the exact same on both sides, plus the resulting knit fabric is a bit on the thin side for a scarf. That may be what you want, however.
OMGosh!! Thank you soooo much for your nice SLOW paced video a beginner can understand!! I couldn't figure out how to knit & purl side by side without having an "X" across the top of my needles, but you showed me how to correct that!! YAY!!!!
Thanks for posting this tutorial it is awesome!! I'm knitting a baby block for my nephew that's due in November. I was looking for some way to add different textures to it and wasn't sure how to go about it. You have saved me days (and possibly weeks) of searching!! :)
Thanks Michele!!! This really helped, but I'm still a little confused. When you start one row on knit, then the next row starts on purl? Or is that too simple?
You will knit for rows in the same pattern.. Knit 4, purl 4. After do four rows, you switch and start with purl. After fours of starting with purl, you go back to starting iwth knit. Does that make sense? Four rows of the same, and then switch. :)

Thank you for this instructional video. I'm a new knitter and I can't believe that I'm actually making the patterns I always wanted to do. (I first learned how to knit as a little girl.) I always wanted to progress to making actual pieces, and with videos like these on YouTube, I'm well on my way!!! Thanks again!
I don't get it. You said you were going to knit four/purl four for four rows then switch, then after you k404 for the first four rows you start knitting instead of purling. What am I missing?
I see why you're confused, I'm not sure that she's explained it very well.
Earlier on, when she's explaining, she says that she'll start the 1st section with k4, then in the next section she'll switch it by starting with p4. Following this point, she'd then have to switch back to k4 on row 9, which I think is what she's doing at 1:29.
It might make more sense when you actually do it, I find that I learn better that way. Have a go at the example I used above and let me know how you get on! :)
Way too much if you are using normal yarn. I use about 24-26 if using funfur, but if you are not, normally 12-16 is good. You probably would want to cast 16 or more for a thicker scarf.
Thanks, I think I can do this. Very easy to follow your instruction.

You will knit for rows in the same pattern.. Knit 4, purl 4. After do four rows, you switch and start with purl. After fours of starting with purl, you go back to starting iwth knit. Does that make sense? Four rows of the same, and then switch. :)

I don't get it. You said you were going to knit four/purl four for four rows then switch, then after you k404 for the first four rows you start knitting instead of purling. What am I missing?
benedictrove 3 years ago
I meant k4p4. oops
benedictrove 3 years ago
It's to do with the 2 sides of the work.
For this pattern, you would do k4p4 on the right side (for instance, every odd row) and p4k4 on the wrong side (every even row) so it would be:
Row 1 k4p4 etc, Row 2 p4k4 etc, Row3 as Row 1 and Row 4 as Row 2.
Then on the next 4 rows, you would do it the other way around, so Row 5 p4k4, Row6 k4p4, Row 7 as Row 5 and Row 8 as Row 6.
does that make sense?
bubblebuffy 3 years ago
but you start row 5 knitting, that is why I am confused. You say normally I would purl but I am going to knit at about 1:29.
benedictrove 3 years ago
I see why you're confused, I'm not sure that she's explained it very well.
Earlier on, when she's explaining, she says that she'll start the 1st section with k4, then in the next section she'll switch it by starting with p4. Following this point, she'd then have to switch back to k4 on row 9, which I think is what she's doing at 1:29.
It might make more sense when you actually do it, I find that I learn better that way. Have a go at the example I used above and let me know how you get on! :)
