I gotta come down on spawn's side on this. Human existence is war, kill or be killed. Everyone is to blame, therefore everyone is blameless. The "hate America fist" attitude is almost a requirement for acceptance in the NY art world(a cliché) . If they weren't hypocrites, they'd find someplace else to try and make it, but they can't, so they stay here and fake self-righteous indignation.
asking questions about america does not mean you hate america. love it or leave it sounds worse than a cliche. my attitude is more openly admitting my ignorances relative to the other. artists are 'making it' all over the world, the global art-world .new york is the center, i'm happy, londons good to and leipzig and........
Take some time and look into German and English "exploitation of the masses". You're talking utopia, the desire for which has probably killed and exploited more folks than anything. JK
these are facts that don't negate all the good things. who admits you into the artworld? a panel? a handshake? i thought it was good work? artists deserve better. i like america:)
This isn't about the art work. Vitaly Komar is a great artist, very intelligent guy. His collection is about the cults of Washington and Stalin not the men per se. I dug the piece. If her would have said " eets Moose und Squirrel" he would have knocked me out.
america was founded on the genocide of it's native peoples and then built with slave-labor. my point is that all countries are fallible. as i stated, i am not holding stalin up as an exemplary model, only pointing out the statement made by the above artist was a good point, to me. his piece asks good questions about histories. tally up all the deaths from korea , vietnam, iraq and the wars on drugs(contras, etc.). russia gave us dostoyevsky and malevich, i'm grateful.
wow, a gallery in soho! good crowd. mr. kalm, have you ever thought about curating shows? you see so much, i know you are a painter and don't have alot of time, but......:)
MrWow, I have curated some shows, "Little Women" at Dam& Stuhltager in 06, "Brooklyn Preview" at Andre Zarre in 02, and "Hiding in Plain Site" at NYArts Gallery on Broadway.
I enjoyed visiting the artists and writing some essays but it takes too much time and energy, time to vid and paint
americans don't need the pickle jar, we have t.v., washingtons corpse is routinely held before us to admire.the further we move from washingtons time the rosier the image becomes.we now have bush, how many iraqi's and americans has he killed? i'm not waving a flag for stalin, but....history is a tale told by the winners.equating them is a good point, for me it implies there is an artifice in our histories, the winners lie and gloss over their means(genocides, religious persecutions, etc.)
