  • Yaa.Im so late on this.. this is making cents to me.. this was a something I should of started with a long time ago. Maybe would of been better..

  • Really helpful

  • Strumming patterns and alternate picking patterns in licks and riffs have always been really easy for me to pick up in songs. The only thing that REALLY REALLY bothers me is learning pitch. I can never seem to do it. Techniques, shapes, and scales are easy stuff. Learning pitch, now that shit is HARD!

  • I am right there with you. Strum patterns are straight up for me, but I am really now putting the effort into my ear. It is so amazing to experience the development, albeit slow. If I can fully develop my pitch, I will feel like I have really achieved something special and of great value (to me anyway). Just work at it a bit each day, and my tip is to sing the chords in arpeggios...sing everything..it seems to sink into the brain easier.

  • @LaSolarGuitar I mostly just try to hum everything when I learn it by ear but still its very slow and i usually get impatient. Especially when I try to pick up a fast lick or riff by ear. I'm now up to the point where I can get the pitch' relationships (I.E. the song's notes are consecutive A, B, C, and I figure it out as D, E, F, keeping the relationship between pitch in a different key) but its still pretty confusing. Thanks for the tip on singing arpeggios though, I'll try that more now.

  • I also highly recommend you join Next level guitar:)

  • LMAO, "How to cop that feel" 1:17

  • 5:52 Mcdonalds commerical

  • thank you so much for helping us beginners in ear training, I played a long time but this is the proper way.

  • 5/5 World's Best Teacher :D

  • you can see when he changes the chord lol

  • diminished chords are more used in piano

  • go away

  • how can i possibly decide which key it is withou touching my guitar O_o

I can tell when its minor major or etc

  • really good relative pitch or perfect pitch

  • this is a great lesson, kindof like a quiz... are there any other lessons like this anywhere?

  • Whats the point in deminished chords? can any1 tell me, I listen to them and just think they sound ugly as if your guitar is out of tune. I understand Major, minor, 7th, suspended ect but I cannot possibly come to grips why any1 would put deminished chords in there music. gr8 lesson btw thank u

  • A lot of metal shredders use them (Yngwie Malmsteen, Muhammed Suicmez, sometimes Alexi Laiho), but I never really hear them as chords. They sound great if they are arpeggiated for sweep picks though.

  • Diminished chords are used as "passing chords" in jazz. For example, they are used to connect two chords to create a chromatic moving bassline. G6-G#dim-Am7 with a G-G#-A bass line sound cool. But as you said the diminished chord alone doesn't sound too good.

  • Oh right, I think I get the concept.... think I will give that a go, not one for Jazz to be honest but I like to give anything a go. Thanks for that.

  • m7b5's are used as ii chords in minor ii-V sequences. Dim7's are used as subs for the V, built off the 3rd it gives you a 7b9 tonality. Dim7's are used as secondary diminished chords to any diatonic chord in the key. They're used for a variety of things...and honestly, they sound fine by themselves.

  • are you mad at me?

  • How can I memorize lets say an E? I can only remember it for a few hours.

  • keep plucking that string for 30 min

    it workrd for me

  • Hey thats a great lesson :) Thank you for what your doing :)

  • Great video. The idea of not thinking in terms of down/up/down/up etc. but rather in a melody such as bop, be, bop, etc. was extremley helpful.

  • I have joined Next Level Guitar and it helped me a lot, I highly recommend it. There are hundreds of videos like this, and even better ones!

  • man that was awesome. that helped so much!!

  • i can see hearing and figuring out the major and minor chords but when ur listening to a song that does like picking and stuff and ur beginning where do u start from? do u just hit random strings until u come along to one that sounds the same?

  • Thanks a lot. It really is helpful.

By the way I feel how hard you are trying us to understand the sound, its interesting, you are honest in your teaching. :-)

  • Thanks David. You are very good, very encouraging and instructive. The blond girl, if she is your partner - let her know she is very good too & has beautiful smiles. Thanks again. Philip

  • "point you can hear it on your own"

  • yes david, its realy nice when you dont need tabs 8)

  • youre cool

  • When you learn songs by ear it makes you realize how often artists record songs out of tune. Not in flat tuning, but just out of tune.

  • a little good lessen

  • love ya man:D:D

  • he said cop that feel

  • good lesson,thank you

  • Your name doesn't even begin to make sense.

  • Very good lesson, thank you!

  • great video, very helpful

  • There are people who do custom finishes around they would need to fill the grain first like gibson do on there painted models the spray it.

  • These guys have inspired me, I have been playing 7 months now, Completely due to David, I used to put the guitar down with no inspiration, I would love to see dave play his Sienna sunburst Hss or Big apple with distortion to see how diffternt it is too a les paul or PRS.

  • Hey,

I just wanted to say, I bumped into your guys vid's and I had to comment on how awesome your method on lessons are. Thanx.

  • Tell the Dude talking OFF CAMERA, he does not have on mike...can NOT hear him...Hello!!

  • honestly, i can hear him. but you're right...if he is gonna chime in, he should be mic'd up, you right.

  • HEY BOY STOP WHINING and just enjoy NLG

  • right

  • Hey, you're talking about tune by ear, tell that to the people who will own Gibson's self tuning guitar! Don't know if you've heard about it.

  • oh, i saw that on the news one day! it was pretty sick

  • Yea, are people getting so lazy they can;t work on their own d--n guitars?

  • no. its just that sometimes, when you're playing, your guitar can go out of tune... so it tunes it while you're playing or something

  • Yeah I know, but still...

  • you actualy gotta go through a whole bunch of lil procedures to get it to tune itts self

  • the self tuning guitar is stupid. it costs like 900 dollars just for the self tuning tuners. just take the 5 seconds to tune it yourself and save the money

  • As I said above people are getting too darn lazy.

  • well, time is money. it just comes down to what its worth to you. maybe my 5 seconds is worth $900

  • thats a cool guitar but i dont think it will stick

people will still just be drawn to the classics and it realy isnt much to look at

  • Yea, it's just your normal, tough gutsy rock machine Les Paul, nothing cool besides the tuner, unless you have 2 or 4 grand sitting in your wallet.

  • lol Tim's the guitar Nazi. thx 4 the lesson!

  • they breached copyright laws or sumtin so they had to be deleted

  • Oh and I've already worked out chords in songs, and even 1 1/2 minute solos!

  • Hey guys I know you're getting a lot of merry christmas wishes, so I figured I'd cover Chanukkah. Happy Chanukkah! I know you guys aren't Jewish but I figured I should spread some cheer anyways! See ya in the next lesson!

  • i noticed that i couldnt hear the bass in any of the songs before, and i developed my ear so i can hear the bass following the guitar everytime now

  • Beautiful Guitar, what type is it. (Sorry if youve answered this before.)

  • the guitar I used in this lesson is a Yamaha acoustic/electric APX-5A model in bronze burst

    rock on!

    David TAub

  • Do they still make it?

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS TIM N DAVID

  • Wow! I pretty much had it except 1 too many downs... You're great Dave!

  • people not having a mic should not be talking to you while taping. your audience is watching you listen to someone else. thanks for the great lessons though

  • hey david. u taught me all the songs i know on youtube u used t0 have guitar lessons but then that thing hgappened

  • why only show the first 8mins? yall want money?

  • Why does everyone expect these professionals to produce videos/lessons for free all the time.

Don't you go to work for free?

It's simple if you want to get the benifiet from the whole lesson then put your hand in your pocket. If not then shut up and enjoy.

  • oh you mean they are working in youtube? then wheres the license? And Why do i need to shut up when im typing?

  • they dont work on youtube they post some of their free videos on youtube they are informative advertisements go to their website lots of useful info and a free 3-day trial

  • Another great lesson. I got it without even trying on guitar. You can hear the order of the notes change depending on whether it's up or down if that makes any sense. I think ear training is very import because things like strums and bends you just can't get from tabs. Keep the awesome lessons coming.

  • Give Tim a break commentors, he's only been playing a little over a year, so his input is valuable, Dave's a great teacher (don't get me wrong) but Tim's living it. You guys ROCK!

  • great but can you make more videos on songwriting

  • this lessons are really good thanks

  • i did d/d/u/u/u/d/u

  • hehe i never learned the down up down up up thing.. i just listen to it and play and i dont even know if its dduudd or what.

  • yeah strum patterns are soooo easy to figure out, people just over think themselves into frustration

  • yea,, dont think,, feel.. lol

  • ok another good tip is to listen to how the strings are attacked, if its kind of low at first its a down stroke, its its high, its up.

  • Tim, HUSH and let the MASTER speak. Still think your great, but QUIET PLEASE!!!!!

  • yeah awesome vid thx guys....

  • lol davids mind 'ffs shut up tim, MY show, you hear me? MY SHOW'
