Hey if you right-wing Christian idiots still wanna be hateful bigots go for it, but don't be blaming people when your cheap plastic "gods" and cheesy pictures of "god" get shit and pissed on. YOU started the hatred. You CHOSE to be bigots. Now take the consequences. If you don't like it, quit being hateful bigots you fucking idiots.
@deecee10000 You left-wingers are hateful bigots. I dare you to mock Islam and make art using a desecrated Koran. Oh wait, you support Islam and hate Christianity. You're the fucking idiot. You're the same fascist Democrats who advocated censorship of the Danish cartoons.
@StoogeWatcher Great question. Clearly we both agree that one person's religious beliefs should never be used to justify censoring anyone else's ideas.
So if the artwork contained ants crawling on a Koran instead of a crucifix, I would hope that someone who cared deeply about the artist's right to free expression -- you, perhaps? -- would do the same thing we've done, and stand up to defend that right.
The Smithsonian can fuck off for this. Stupid c*nt pussies who cave in to lying Rethug hypocrite bullshit should be FIRED, and then have their asses kicked.
@jdarrah17 You liberal fascists are anti-Christian hypocrites. You would be bitching about tolerance and it been a portrait of Muhammad because the Dumbocrat Nazis are pro-jihadist. THey supported the Danish cartoon riots!
@StoogeWatcher -- What the fuck is your problem? Your post doesn't even make sense anyway. But oh, I know what your problem is - you're a fucking knucklehead & apparently can't read!! I wouldn't care which piece of art is being censored, whether it's Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, or whatever. It should NOT be removed from a museum because of some pansy ass hypocrite!!!! And almost always, the hypocrites in the US are Christians. And NO, there were NO Dems supporting the cartoon riots, idiot!!
@jdarrah17 It DOES make sense. How come artists never mock Islam like they do Christianity? I don't recall Christians rioting over a crucifix in urine the same way Muslims did over cartoons. You're the fucking knucklehead, Islamist idiot. You're the hypocrites because you censored the Danish cartoons, yet advocate a religious statue smeared in elephant dung. Democrats are anti-Christian hypocrites. And you say you're all about tolerance and diversity. Dems SIDED with the cartoon rioters!
@StoogeWatcher -- Dude, we're NOT hypocrites. Where the hell do you get this crazy idea that Dems censored the Danish cartoons??? Didn't happen!! And NO, we did NOT support the crazy loon Muslims who rioted!! You can type it again, but it will NOT EVER make it true!!!! Where do you get this shit????? I'm not Islamist either, so whatever. As I said, EVERY Dem I know said that the cartoonists had every right to publish their cartoons. You're fucking DELUSIONAL. Get your FACTS STRAIGHT!!!!!!!
@StoogeWatcher -- Also, artists in the US probably do not mock Islam as much as they do Christianity because the majority of religious people in the US still practice some form of a Christian-based religion. If Islam grows here, I imagine we will see the mocking of Islam grow here too. Just a guess.
@jdarrah17 Artists don't mock Islam because they're afraid of death threats and being called "Islamophobic" and "racist" even though Islam is not a race. Can you name one time Christians rioted after being offended? Besides, CNN didn't show the Danish cartoons. Neither did the New York Times. Both cited "respect for Islam", but they have no problem showing anti-Israel cartoons.
@StoogeWatcher -- Another thing -- Dems are NOT fascists, no matter how you look at it. You obviously do not even know the definition of fascism. If any group in the US is fascist, it would actually be the Rethugs.
@jdarrah17 Democrats are the fascists: Anti-Jewish, anti-Christian, pro-abortion, pro-Sharia, anti-military, food bans, Duke lacrosse rape hoax, Tawana Brawley, affirmative action, anti-Israel. You Democrats are the thugs. You want to lynch and kill Clarence Thomas.
This whole feed is funny as hell. You really belive that the security in these places have a choice other than to do their jobs ,go protest, march or pass a pettion and @ fakebeliver please belive I agree the Smitsonian should not censor art but find a better way to protest and with the right people. As far aas stick it keep it civil and be an adult. DONT be an internet Gangter it's not a agood look .
Funny how the once oppressed have so easily taken on the roles of our new oppressors. How Pathetic. I see why Jessie Jackson is so disappointed with his people. With this kind of shit that I am all to familiar with back when i lived in the D, King probably rolled himself right out of his grave.
I'm curious which conservative group banned this? Would they support a ban on the crucifix as well? It's a violent portrayal of a man dying in a roman torturing device after all. I don't want my children "exposed" to that.... what if they develop some sick enjoyment out of torturing people?
@Traderjoe56 It's not just one conservative group. It's the conservative movement itself, a concerted effort of anti-gay organizations, a conglomeration of conservative media outlets (radio/tv/internet) and pressure from local, state and federal conservative politicians to censor and deny funding to those they disagree with. It's the worst kind of censorship stemming from the worst kind of bigotry.
@fakebeliever Liberals love to bitch about censorship, yet they were the ones who complained about Danish cartoons and wouldn't publish them in newspapers.
I am trying to find the rules that they cite in their statement about this. The photography part I understand, but I can't find the handing out flyers or displaying a placard.
And it only looks like you were booted for 12 months.
You guys rock! I respect your courage. And I love the work of David Wojnarowicz. I suspect this controversy has made him more widely known which is great!
I'm curious about this "banned for life" clause: seems very strange and unenforceable. Who authorized it? Was it issued in writing and in what context?
Banned for life ... from what? A museum that bans art?
And how do they intend to enforce this ban for life? It seems a waste to have security guards memorizing the computer-aged faces of people who present no harm to the facility.
Last, cops and guards of all sorts need to understand that people will NOT stop filming them. The public has a right to know what they do, anywhere. I can understand not filming a museum, but once guards detain someone, it's news, and must not be obstructed.
Thank you for your bravery. The Security Guards are misfits. We should have a protest outside with a BIG SCREEN TV showing David's film "Fire in My Belly" with this footage following to show how AMERICA is no longer a DEMOCRACY. Again, thank you for doing this..
Thanks everybody for your (mostly) kind and supportive comments! This really means a lot. We'll be announcing some next steps soon, so please be sure to check out the blog -- silencestillequalsdeath.blogspot.com -- and I'll try to make sure it goes up on the new hideseek.org site as well. You all rock!
The video is playing on a loop in the lobby at The New Museum of Contemporary Art on Bowery and Prince, NYC. Quote, "It will remain through January 23, 2011, as an act of solidarity with the many artists whose rights of expression continue to be limited by misinformation and fear." They rock.
As one of the patrons intimidated by the security guards, I want to thank you. Thank you for taking a stand and thank you for showing "A Fire in My Belly". After Mike and Mike were escorted out, people starting talking about the video, the protest, censorship, what it means, and Mike and Mike's action brought the censorship to the foreground of discussion in the exhibit that day.
@saritapdx I'm so sorry that happened to you and the others. That was the worst part of the entire experience IMO. But thanks for posting here, and I'm glad what everyone saw sparked some discussion.
I don't think you are a prick or any of the other things people here have suggested. It is embarrassing and foolish how conservative our "free country" has become. Right on for standing up for free speech. This is our building, it is a public, federal gallery. The work in question was removed for political reasons. I think that is EXTREMELY worthy of protest. Good work.
@MrJ5594 Stick it, troll. Nobody was "harassed" by a guy standing in one spot doing nothing. But the people took the flyers and then WERE harassed by the security guards. What does "go to the censors not the galleries" even mean? That's an empty, useless statement. THE GALLERY CENSORED THE ART. Those that run the gallery bowed to political and conservative media pressure by a bunch of bigots and fascists who want to shut everyone up who has a different opinion than theirs and DARES to express it
it is very sad that censorship like that happen my thing if it is not showing or doing things to hurt children then why. and why is religion doing our thinking for us for us to live by and what we want to look at.
Standing up for the first amendment does not make a person a "prick", indicate that they are "immature' or that they are "insecure" about their sexuality. It's unclear how you came to this conclusion anon04. These men are taking a risk (of being arrested) to stand up for rights which many take from granted and which conservative republicans are attempting to erode. I see this as a heroic action. Don't you?
You are an inspiration for gay and straight people alike who want to protect freedom of speech. You most definitely did NOT give gays a bad name. You showed what it looks like when you care deeply about giving the powerless a voice. Thank you so much for your protest.

Goading a federal institution into arresting you is not a gay rights issue. You only proved you are a prick. One of my best friends is gay (I am not). She is secure with herself and very mature about it. You are not. At the end of the day, regardless of your orientation, you are still a prick and give gay rights a bad name.
