Far from a "low" box squat, it is a "high" box squat if anything, and correct me if I am wrong, but isnt the point of a box squat to pause on the box at the bottom of the rep an explode from that stopped position, much like a pause press when benching?
Its cool that you are coming back from an injury, and you are obviously strong... I recently incorporated box squats and am hoping they will help push my max from 475 to over 5 plates.
@Jeremybaum22 ATG squats are not bad for your knees, thats like says aslow conrolled bench press is bad for you. primal people squat ATG for hours. here are some facts: you can squat more with a belt, box, and a pad. another fact: the box isnt there to tell him when to go up, trust me you can feel when the exercise is done right. The box squat is to help supplement your raw squat. You stop all movementum and can go deeper depending on the box hieght. It is pretty much like a floor press.just facts
The problem with all squat video is a lack of complete understanding on the different styles of squatting. It was once said that comparing this (arguably a more PL style hip dominant squat) to an oly squat was like apples to oranges. Different strokes for different folks.
One thing is true though, this style of squatting can lead to tightness if proper flexibility isn't maintained continuously. Though that can be said for any type of muscle training regimen.
And please post credible sites where your information can be found to stand behind your facts. Such as scholarly or medicinal expert sites. Not just because some body builder said so.
Lose the box??? Look at his legs, they go parallel. The reasoning for the object there is to let him know when he is parallel. When he fells himself touching it, he then explodes up. Nothing wrong with his squats. And for those of you who believe in ass to grass squats please inform me why you believe that way is so much better? It's horrible on your knees and doesn't provide anymore benefits to go that low.
While I hate the "ATG" crowd's constant whining bullshit as much as the next semi-serious guy, you've gone a step further by insisting that they are bad for your knees. Extra sheering force is applied, true, but the origination of the ATG=bad knees came from a debunked "study" from the 50's or 60's. This is pretty old news. One could just as easily comment on the sheering force applied to the back in a hip-dominant squat after all.
@Jeremybaum22 the purpose of the box is NOT to tell him when he is parallel (if his goal is to do a legitimate box squat.) The purpose is to break the momentum of the squat, much like a pause rep on bench press or stopping at the bottom on a set of deadlifts rather than doing touch and go reps... by breaking your momentum you ar forcing your body to reengage the muscles and utilize more hamstrings and him drive, again, when done correctly.
yea man lose the box and i wouldnt call it a deep squat by anymeans, but it is amazing after a knee injury and that you have a strong enough core to even support teh weight. It sucks to lift less but i say drop the weight alot and do goot squat especially to help ur knee recover
@MegaHeavylifter Thanks.. I can actually go deeper with lighter weight.. But training heavy is my passion.. Box squats had its purpose.. it's always good vary your workouts.. I do box squats every other week.. I also do front squat, hack squat, Smith machine squat, explosive barbell jump squat.. just to name a few..
Also for the video, first of all good job. You're damn strong lol. But with a knee injury, i'd definately tell ya to go deeper in the squat... You're not hitting parallel in this video and that actually puts more pressure on your knee as opposed to letting it transfer the load properly.
@BirdsEyeV1ew Thanks.. Since injury I've been afraid to go lower with that much weight.. I can easily go ass to heel with 225 lbs.. But doing that with 405 will blow my knees out.. I've tried.. lol
@EzeFitness you need to lower the bar on your back it's way to high for that type of weight, if you lower the bar you'll be more stable and upright and you'll never have a knee issue again
@EzeFitness Box Squats put more pressure on your knees because they cause you to hit a static position, which causes you knees to have to simply hold the weight, rather than simply following a continual motion.
I mean, what's harder, accelerating something already moving, or a block from standstill?
@sonotover Actually, alot of good squatters that i know use raised heal shoes. The reason that running shoes are bad is because of the squishy sole and the softness like you said. They do make hard soled shoes with a raised heal though, specifically for squatting or lifting.

@Jeremybaum22 Can you explain to me why they're horrible on your knees? Both physics and my own experience would suggest box squats are worse.
EndlersaurusRex 1 month ago
@Jeremybaum22 please research olympic squatting -- the greatest amount of force on the knee is when at 90 degrees.

@Jeremybaum22 the lower you go the more of the glutes are activated
also it builds the part of the quad closer to the knee

Runner suck for squats, the large heel forces you to lean forward on the balls of your feet, get some flat shoes with a harder sole.
