  • I was just listening to this in the trading room w/my ear buds & i didn't even realize that i was banging my foot to the 9/8 beat until my trader sent me a bloomberg im chat msg to tell me to chill !!!hahahahah

  • Hush. Check the drum fill from 2.06 to 2.10. Never Phorget Phil Collins XX

  • Hot fires....bleak atmosphere...Bacchus is about to appear......what a part!!!!!!!Jeeeeesus......Collins and Banks in full flight!!!!!

  • stiil gives me goosebumps after all these years - just missed seeing Genesis with Gabriel saw my 1st Genisis gig after he left at Finsbury Park Rainbow.

  • one of the best songs ever written , fabuleux , fantastic

  • Superb performance

  • listen to I hung my head by Sting, THAt's 9/8, you'll see the difference in the pulse. It feels like just substracting an 8th more to 5/4 time(since 5/4 is 10/8, minus an 8th you'll have 9/8). it feels like skipping a note, it'll feel a lot weirder if you are not use to it. It feels very different.

  • I'm a drummer too. The distinction between 9/8 and 9/4 isn't important to me. As far as I'm concerned, the song is in 9...you can count to 9 repeatedly.

  • @Mickster6988240 I use the count/beat of this particular piece as the rhythm to the bell on my bicycle :) Genesis rule.

  • Wow...just Wow.

  • How lucky we were! Superb performance. How was this recorded and is it available commercially?

  • 2.07-2.10 - Most Apocalyptic Drum-Phil Ever, 1973

  • this guys don't know about note value, this is more like 9/4. i counted 9 quarter notes, not 8th notes. two measures of 9/8 make a measure of 9/4, but this song is not played in a 9/8 sense.

  • @juanbarros88 I only know that the name of the song is apocalypse in 9/8, and I don't think they did it wrong (listening to the guitar makes me think to 9/8)

  • after listening for a minute I insist it's in 9/4, unless the song is really slow and the quarter notes im counting are eight notes to them. I hope you know what I mean. ''Time Keepers'' AKA Drummers usually have a better understanding of note value. I'm a drummer. the back beat of the drums can pretty much tell the value they were using and judging from that it's pretty much played in 9/4. you will hear the difference when u listen to a 9/8 and a 9/4 track preferably same tempo

  • @juanbarros88 I understood what you mean :) I am a guitarist, so It wasn't my intent to teach you anythink about tempo :p from now on, I will say It's 9/4 ;)

  • @Stany89 If that's the case, then somebody should inform the band (Genesis) about this particular piece: "Hey, Tony/Phil/Mike/Peter/Steve, this bit's in 9/4. Shouldn't it be called Apocalypse in 9/4?" (Joke) :)

  • @SPeacock "hey guys, do you know you must re-print all "Foxtrot" LPs cover?" xD

  • @Stany89 I wonder what each band member's reaction would be? Here are my thoughts:

Tony - Laugh it off, thinking it to be a joke

    Phil - Indifferent

    Mike - Annoyed look

    Peter - Annoyed look

    Steve - Indifferent

  • @SPeacock imho:

Tony: seems to be worried about It "...what the...?!?! O_O"

    Phil: laugh a lot xD

    MIke: "oh...ok, that's the same!"

Peter: "I don't care, It can be also 16/32"

    Steve: "that's not possible! It's fu..ing 9/8!!!"

    xD

  • @Stany89 Here's an idea :) Which band member would be the most likely to punch the unfortunate messenger? I vote either Mike or Tony.

  • @SPeacock for me Steve! xD

  • @Stany89 I hope you're not making fun of me, hahaha

  • @juanbarros88 nono, don't worry ;)

  • Good musicians like these don't necessarily know about every aspect of music theory. they can get away by saying this song's tempo is 43.5 bpm instead of 87 bpm (what one would normally say about the tempo of this song) that way, the quarter notes that one normally counts would become eight notes. it works but it's hardly convincing, haha i mean i don't think they intended playing at 44 bpm, an almost impossible tempo. yes, I got my metronome out and estimated the tempo of the first seconds.

  • @juanbarros88 actually, listen to the subdivisions...it is an atypical subdivision of 9/4, as it would imply that 9/4 is being split directly in the middle (the and of 4). Not typical of a 9/4 division. 9/8 gives each beat its own freedom in this sense...but more importantly, it is purely the composers choice. While you are not wrong...you are not right...either way...enjoy the music...and don't question Genesis.

  • yes that's the best answer, I'm not wrong, but neither right. but even if the guys from genesis say that, to me is 9/4. i dont heard an atypical 9/4 at all. it's very normal. the subdivision in the drums are 8 notes, but it doesn't mean it's in 9/8. 4/4 can be subdivided into 8ths or 16th, 32nds or 64th notes. youdo know that 9/4 is equal to two measures of 9/8 and two measures of 9/8 equal to 18/8, thus 9/4 equal to 18/8. so it's all the same, but of all those 9/4 is the easiest approach.

  • this can also be in 36/16 or 72/32 or 144/64, you choose. 9/4 fits perfectly, nothing atypical, you'll have to see me counting it. so we both know what pulse i'm following. the bass drum notes at the beginning when they are played w/o variation is the quarter note, the pulse, there are 9 of those per measure and they fit evenly. that to me is the quarter note, i can't see how those bass drum notes can be other thing other than a quarter notes.

  • chilling

  • So grateful I was old enough to catch them with Peter Gabriel in '75. As a drummer, Phil Collins has been a big influence for me. This is a prime example. Thank you for posting !!!! ~~ ~~ !!!!

  • @pleased9 It's a pleasure ;)

  • Genesis @ their very best

  • Being a loyal fan of Peter Gabriel, I would find it a bit ridiculous of a reunion with his former bandmates and touring. Now that Phil is finished drumming it wouldn't happen anyway but seeing a 60 year old man donning masks and make up would to me, seem a desperate attempt to relive the glory days. Let's enjoy what Peter and Genesis gave us in the 70's. I saw the 2007 "selection of shows" as Phil called it...while good, I wasn't blown away. Fortunately, the old footage exsists!

  • Orgasmo in 9/8

  • 666 is no longer alone.

  • I think I was 13 or 14, a time I was overwhelmed with musical impressions on vinyl including Genesis; now 30 years later it's still there...

  • Thanks so much for this vid. I never got to see Peter Gabriel era Genesis. I got to see this song performed on the Wind and Wuthering tour and it was fantastic. It was missing PG though. I welcome any chance to see the best Genesis lineup.

  • Just as I remember the Miami concert. Still inspiring after all these years.

  • amazing

  • @Stany89 This is a mix of the recording from the 30 and 31 october 1973. There is no playback ! And we have only one hour of film from two shows... :(

Incredibile ke Peter abbia cantato in playback tutta la canzone, forse l'avrà fatto solo nelle parti "apocalypse in 9/8 e "as sure as eggs is eggs" ;(

  • @ToscanoRomano ahahahahahah erezione addirittura; forse erano i pantaloni stretti dell'epoca (li ho portati anch'io ai miei tempi e...davano fastidio anzicheno...)!

  • Thx for the vid, great moment !!

  • This version of genisis,.was the last great model..Gabriel left the following year as they were just about to become superstars ,,which is what happened to Phil Collins,..and that marked the end of this truly original band,.At this point in time,. no-one could touch them,.musically or theatricaly,.The Lamb Lies Down On Brodway was thier next and final album ,with Gabriel at the top of his game as the illusioniast.,rivaling Bowie,Ian Anderson, even Jagger a bit, and the music was incredible..cliff

  • check out Zappa, Yes, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, ELP, they could easily touch this musically or theatrically, not to mention DP and LZ

  • check out Melting Euphoria. They are similar to Gong and Hawkwind and Ozric Tentacles. Eat Static, System 7, Aphrodities Child, Jade Warrior, Michael Tsarion, Leo Zagami, Dr. Bill Deagle, Jordan Maxwell, ALEXANDRE DUMAS pere and PHILIP CAPET are mo better as we say in Hawaii.

  • I fully agree... Couldn't formulate it better.

  • Bravo! The quality of this piece is amazing..

  • 2 words.... KICK ASS!!!!!

  • Amazing!!! What a MASTERPIECE!!

I remember hearing this for the first time & being blown away! There were good groups around during the time but this version of Genesis was AT LEAST as good as anyone!

This would be much better if the audio was more in synch with the video. Still, what a performance!

  • @treed51 MICHAEL TSARION IS THE WORLDS PREMIER CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE, JORDAN MAXWELL, LEO ZAGAMI AND ALEXANDRE DUMAS PERE ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL.

  • yeah, this is pretty much it.

  • devastating!!

  • Damn, this will always be awesome.

  • @gabrielized Michael Tsarion is the worlds premier conspiracy researcher/lecturer/author. Dr. Bill Deagle, leo Zagami, Jordan Maxwell and Alexandre Dumas pere are highly informative as well.

  • I've alwyas loved it
