These guys are awesome! Wynton is in rare form, a true giant in this clip. Such genius in registration and emphasis pertaining to coupled with his other obvious areas of mastery equals when he feels it watch out! So wonderful. Take Care!
Eric Lau is another killer who went to Green Chimneys. He was there in the 1990s and he killed a woman who was a gym teacher in November 2009. It was in the paper that he killed her and that the courts sent him to David Hall, a hospital at Green Chimneys. Green Chimneys is the kind of place that makes people like Philip Zagarella, Eric Napoletano and Eric Lau even more disturbed and dangerous.
Green Chimneys is an RTC in Brewster NY where many have been abused. I aws abused the whole damn time I was there. I'm sorry the Monkman's daughter, whom I didn't know because she was years before I was there ever went because beatings were the usual. Staff beat kids and I was given beatings every day. It's a damn shame he would name a song after that dreadful, horrible RTC.
I think the people that think the alto is out of tune need to have their hearing checked. Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson is tearing it up on this chart!
I love seeing the Asian guy playing bass. It reminds me of Louis Armstrong's drummer, who Satchmo use to affectionately call "the Little Filipino boy."
I believe Miles and Freddie Hubbard wouldve changed their opinion about his jazz playing had they lived longer, maybe freddie did idk, but he did criticize him in '93 in an interview after he lost his chops.
As much as I've seen this video, I keep noticing new tidbits of info. At 2:45 after the high note and the rest of the band comes in to start another chorus, Wynton admits to Warmdaddy that he temporarily "forgot where he was".
@davisc1926 Thing about that is that it has happened to the rest of us. If it hasn't, you haven't been playing enough. That's what make these performance perfect in their nature. You can play the same thing about 800-1000 times and then one day you just blank out and you feel more human than you ever could. It's amazing.
Oh I get it now! It sounds like Wynton is playing lydian but really what I was hearing is the M7th of the melodic minor scale, which if you were to take whatever key this is and take the relative major, that would be the #11 of that scale.
Since the 2nd chord of this tune is III, or the I of the relative major, it gives the scale he is playing a really interesting color because by overlapping the same scale over both modes, you end up with either melodic minor, or lydian.
Abm7 for 16 bars, Gb7sus for 8 bars, Abm7 for the last 8. The second chord of the tune is actually the bVII, not the III.
The relative Major of Abm is Cb (B). the M7 of Abm is G, which is not the #11 in BM. It's the b6. Wynton is simply using the Ab mel. minor for the Abm7 (as you said), but it doesn't overlap with the Gb chord. There is no lydian mode being used.
basically the same thing. I saw an original transcription of the form, and the bridge was Gb7sus, which would essentially be Cb7/Gb (could also be Cbm7/Gb). Kengo (the bassist) seems to stick to Gb in the bridge during the solos.
I don't understand how someone could not like this dude! He is a pure genius who deserves full recognition!! This is my favorite performance of his that I've ever seen!! Thanks for posting the best wynton video ever houseoftribes!!
(3:49-)3:55-4:25(-4:29). Period. I love the way he jumps two octaves at a time before that as much as the next person, but his phrasing here is so amazing. The way he works with just that one idea and just those few notes including my beloved flat 6 is absolutely brilliant. So choice.
You are spot on!! Wynton always teaches that in jazz improvisation you should get an idea and milk it for what it's worth and that is quite evident in all of his solos. Everybody listen to the bridge at 1:50 when Joe accents on the snare and Wynton 'fakes' him out on the repeated phrase. You can hear the guys laughing in the background. I LOVE JAZZ!!!
You and me both, my friend. I play saxophone (big surprise there given my username...) and it's clips like this that make me realize that there is nothing else that I would rather be doing with my life.
I wish I could help you, but all I know is a 32-bar chorus in the AABA form. Maybe more musically inclined people than myself can give you the harmonies. Thank goodness I don't have to know the actual chord changes in order to listen!! haha :)
I love how Wynton invites the drummer into the conversation at 2:00. To me, his music in general is so inviting. There are few musicians that are such virtuosos on their instruments, they can basically play anything in anyway during improvisation. It amazes me how he jumps octaves at 3:23 and not crack a note!!
at 3:23. wynton Man? What the fuck are you even doing. You are a beast. After 20 seconds of two octave leaps, you even freak yourself out. You are the shit.

wow, a lot of "out of tune"specialists . any idea who is playing?
PoggiiBonsii 4 months ago
I think the alto sounds great.
Then again i'm not an arrogant elitist...
He might be playing a lot of "wrong" notes, but he's definatly not out of tune.
Also, the "wrong" notes sounds great in combination with the dissonant piano.

Wouldn't the #11 of a relative major scale be the major sixth of its relative melodic minor?
jakedam 2 years ago
yeah that's exactly right...so what's your point? lol
copedogg888 2 years ago
Ormaaj said it would be the major seventh of the relative melodic minor scale.
jakedam 2 years ago
oh. well he's wrong lol. wow
copedogg888 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure the form of the tune is AABA:
Abm7 for 16 bars, Gb7sus for 8 bars, Abm7 for the last 8. The second chord of the tune is actually the bVII, not the III.
The relative Major of Abm is Cb (B). the M7 of Abm is G, which is not the #11 in BM. It's the b6. Wynton is simply using the Ab mel. minor for the Abm7 (as you said), but it doesn't overlap with the Gb chord. There is no lydian mode being used.

bridge is 2 chords alternating: gb min/cb7 one bar each.
