Escape velocity is 8 mps. Shuttle ain't no escaping, but orbiting at 5 mps. One orbit of 25,000 miles per 90 minutes. Launch starts at 0 mps, and reaches 5 mps only up in space. Name of the game: acceleration.

@jah2mail What math are you doing? Escape velocity is 25,000 mph and that is 7 miles per second. I was incorrect in stating that is how fast the space shuttle travels, it's velocity is 17,500 mph. I don't know where you get 1.4 miles every 2 seconds.
