  • hahaha you didn't let him choke your cymbals from 0:41 to 0:44 ! that's really funny :D did you forget about that part ? but it was still a wonderful performance. This performance was how i got to know of your drumming abilities :D

  • I know! I cringe at that part every time I watch this video! If you watch the counterpart video (marked "Rehearsal"), I get it right there, but the segments are half as long; on the night of the concert, we decided backstage right before we went on that we wanted to extend those bits, so we did...which is part of why I screwed this up. :D

  • @drumology2001 hahaha it doesn't matter :D it was still very well done !

  • hey derek , i suppose this is the guy the sabians are with now ? :P

  • The Sabians are still with me for the time being, but yes - next time Brian comes down to Tri-Cities or I go up to Spokane, he'll be receiving them. How did you know about that? Been trolling my other video comments? ;)

  • @drumology2001

    nope (:

i asked you who the sabians were going to the last time you wrote on facebook that you were gonna start endorsing Soultone cymbals :D

  • Oh, I see. I had forgotten about that. My bad. ;)

  • wow! incredible! I'm using this as one of my auditions for the McGill jazz performance program. If it could live up to half of this I'm positive I will get in. Also, do you know anything about which jazz performance degree program in Canada will get me best prepared for a career in Studio/performance? Thanks appreciate it!!!

  • Thanks for the lovely comments - I appreciate it. :D

As far as what kind of degree (in Canada) would prepare you for studio work, I'm not sure - I've never been a student in Canada! ;)

In the States, the closest is just a Percussion Performance degree, available at most universities and colleges. The best training, however, is real-world experience, so make sure you're getting out and playing a lot and networking. That'll go farther than any degree. :D

  • awesome video. haha it would have been sick if you guys had crossed crossed sticks, playing on each others'.

but improv is improv, good music is good music, and this is amazing. keep it up!

  • haha!

    YES!

i'm so glad i was there!

  • very nice...big fan of your playing

  • Thanks, Bill! I am a big fan of yours, too! Your Dixieland and New Orleans style playing is killin'! I wish you audio and video lined up on your vids, but it's all good. I can still hear and see, and that's all that matters. :)

  • THAT WAS AWESOME....=]

  • so sweet I am a huge timbali/hand drum fan, and I play jazz huge respect to the both of you!

p.s. does brian have any videos of him jamming on his stuff?

  • Thanks for the props, my man! We wrote that little trade-off snippet 2 days before the filming of this concert, and somehow managed to memorize it (for the most part - I screwed up one part).

Brian doesn't have any videos of him playing latin percussion, though he did march World Class Drum Corps for the last handful of years before he aged out, and I KNOW there's video of that out there. I'll tell him he needs to get the camera out and make a few LP vids now. ;)

  • really what drum core, did he march tenor cause if not then e is a sissy, unless it was like bass 11, yea but you guys pulled this off so well!

  • Seattle Cascades (Div I). He was the Drumline Section Leader for several years, and yes, he played tenors (except his first year, where he played Bass 5). He's a bad-ass drummer and a helluva great guy - best friend for sure.

  • well first of all thanks for the timley response!! only I have never heard of the cascades, I don't follow drumcorps as much as I would like but I just haven't heard of this group at all, no offense but were they any good? oh yea and once a tenor always a tenor!! and if you didn't guess I play tenors and love it!

  • I should hope so; I marched there myself. ;)

The Cascades have been Div III champions and Div I Top 12 Finalists in recent years. Surprised you've never heard of them; it's the only active drum corps in the Pacific Northwest.

  • I pm'ed you with my information, hope to see the cd and the bill soon!

  • wow!! that's so good!!

  • Thanks, Dan! I appreciate the comment, as well as you making this video one of your Favorites. ;)

  • amazing

  • it's wonderful ! I'm drummer and i really love what you do !

  • do you have the full video of this song. my hs jazz band is playing this and itd be cool to see a full video of it.

  • I THINK so...not quite sure. I'll go back through my DV tapes and see if I didn't record over it on accident! ;)

If not, I will post it and send you the link.

  • GREAT! =D

thanks a lot. i like the latin groove you play on the cowbell sounds very solid. when i play it i play more of what sounds like a 16th note pattern so my 16th notes become the bands 8th notes. kind of weird but soudnds almost like latin funk! haha =)

  • awesome man, great job! very impressive! Where did you study?

  • The School of Hard Knocks. ;)

I'd say 80% of my training came from learning to listen before I learned to read music. I played along to records most of my life, and I recommend that to EVERYBODY. After all, if you can't learn how to listen, you'll never be a TRUE musician.

    Thanks for the kind words!

  • Excellent!

  • Awesome! For a seconde i thought ur friend was gonna knock u over while drumming haha

  • Nah...I use a Roc N' Soc throne with a backrest. If anybody's falling over, it's him. ;)
