The Luftwaffe wasnt crushed until the allies gained air supremacy and was luring german fighters from their baces into a fight. Invasion of Russia wasn't insane, it was quite logical. Hitler knew Stalin had been preparing to attack him. Germany was very vulnerable - given dependency on Swedish iron ore and Romanian oil - both in dangerous proximity of the USSR. Hitler's invasion was, in a fact, a pre-emptive strike (quite successful). Red Army's military build-up was impressive (in 1941, the Soviets had several times more tanks than Germany, and much of them had superior fire power and armour).
