...I miss the Notre Dame Metz performance, still have the placeholder in my favoruites.
The instrument is one of the finest existing examples of the French orchestral school of organ building. Even though it doesn't even have a 32' octave in the pedal it still has a very strong and commanding presence.
The Hauptwerk virtual versions of this organ heard here on YouTube are not completely faithful as they use an extended stoplist that includes a 32' Principal and Bombarde in the Pedale.
recorded by a virtuoso organist at Metz! It used to be on you tube, but has been unavailable for some time.Sorry if I remember the name I will post it asap
Sorry, but really, this performance as wonderful as it is, is as nothing with the Metz performance! And as for clarity, the organ on that performance lacks nothing.it is a technical masterpiece, but so much more!I only wish it was still available so you could hear it!Most people know the Widor toccata at a much faster pace than Widor played it,which in one instance was put down to the tracker action.......but Vierne came up with much more florid pieces, especially, Niaides.......
Guys, and ladies! I have heard this piece played on the organ at notre dame de metze,by a remarkeble organist, sadly now withdrawn from you tube.
he played it much faster, and at the risk of incurring you wrath, Iwould have to say
it was stunning!I cannot remember his name, but,his performance was just breathtaking, and makes this also brilliant performance, sound laboured......sorry!
@organblower - really? 44 ranks is quite a lot! Voiced well, you have a powerful organ... of course, in America, where wealth and excess are common, large organs tend to be the norm, and Canada isn't vastly different, but here in Europe we have learned to get the most out of small organs, hence the vast number of very fine 35-50rk 3m instruments. Even the very small - the 17ss, 17rk Cavaillé-Coll at Farnborough Abbey, or the 16ss, 20rk St Martin in Petersham - can be very powerful and versatile.
wow!!! wonderfull, your interpretation of Vierne is convinced the best in the word

@ROLANDMC80EX Metz performance? In the city of Metz? By some performer named Metz?

certainly capable, but it's just too fast. Technique is impressive, but better judgement on how tempo affects clarity is even MORE impressive.

Great tempo for this work and "it AIN'T" easy!!!! Played this Symphony for my graduate M.M. Hard as hell but very much worth the work!

Bravo. Though id set the pace just a fraction slower. u get to hear the organ really speak the parts then.

Wonderful!

For me - a little too fast - it seems the organ can't speak properly - but I love the playing and the organ.

I LOVE this piece. And this performance is excellent, except for the tempo... which is too fast imho...
